Sinossi

A supremely gripping page-turner from the author of the acclaimed THE LAST DAYS OF JACK SPARKS (the Orbit Books novel now in development at the Hollywood director Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment.)

"I reached a certain moment and wanted to stop and applaud my Kindle.  On a tube train" – Sebastian Patrick, journalist and writer/editor of the official RED DWARF site

"When the biggest turn in the story occurred, I actually exclaimed (out loud with great exuberance), "Holy ****, that is so ******* clever" – Mich Masoch, CHS REGIME

"I can't get enough of writing like this" – Pablo Cheesecake, THE ELOQUENT PAGE

"Will leave its mark on the reader long after the last page" – Chris Limb, THE BRITISH FANTASY SOCIETY

In a big house in the countryside, a recently bereaved and increasingly unstable author toils over a novel which will close the best-selling trilogy of Jade Nexus fantasy books.

Speculation and rumour are rife among hardcore Jade Nexus fans that their heroine will die at the novel’s conclusion - a possibility against which they loudly protest via social media as the release date nears.

How do you deal with grief, under such intense pressure? How do you cope with distractions from your work such as a violent intruder, panicked messages from your agent and a potential love interest moving into the cottage across the field? And far worse than any of those problems... what do you do about the Beast in your basement?

Filled with unbearable suspense, BEAST IN THE BASEMENT is a contemporary horror-thriller novella about obsession, revenge, censorship, blame culture and personal responsibility. A dark tale with a kick like a mule.

Jason Arnopp has previously written for the worlds of DOCTOR WHO and FRIDAY THE 13TH. His other fiction titles include A SINCERE WARNING ABOUT THE ENTITY IN YOUR HOME and AUTO REWIND. A former journalist, he has also written the non-fiction book HOW TO INTERVIEW DOCTOR WHO, OZZY OSBOURNE AND EVERYONE ELSE.

MORE PRAISE FOR BEAST IN THE BASEMENT:

"This is enormous spooky fun and reads like lightning!" – author Jenny Colgan

“This short sharp shock of weird horror cuts right to the quick. Writing about writers is tricky, but Arnopp handles it with beastly aplomb” – author Chuck Wendig

“Jason Arnopp snares his poor readers using inch-perfect plotting and compulsive suspense so that, once they're hooked, he can inflict his own dark brand of please-no horror on their unprepared psyches. BEAST IN THE BASEMENT is highly recommended for anyone who doesn’t realise how much an author can love and hate his readers at the same time. Hell’s teeth, what's the matter with the man?” – author JMR Higgs

"BEAST IN THE BASEMENT is the rarest of things, a story that manages to keep you guessing right up until the end. Arnopp obviously delights in messing with his readership’s heads... I really can’t get enough of writing like this" – Pablo Cheesecake, THE ELOQUENT PAGE

"It’s a clever, intimate and sometimes oppressive tale and Arnopp takes us deep into the dark recesses of his lead character’s tormented mind as he rushes from pitiful hopelessness to elation via an unhealthy dose of desperation" – Paul Mount, STARBURST MAGAZINE

"The suspense is palpable and almost cinematic at times, the descriptions of some scenes painting themselves on the mind’s eye with HD clarity. This is a taut tale of the some of the worst excesses of human paranoia that will leave its mark on the reader long after they have finished the last page" – Chris Limb, THE BRITISH FANTASY SOCIETY

This was one spooky read. It is very well written and edited, plus it is different. I like different books these days as, if you're a heavy reader, you get tired of the same-old, same-old. In some weird way, it is a disturbing read, even though there is not a lot of blood and gore. I'm sure I'm going to end up buying more of Arnopp's books, though I may need a little time to get over this one.

I read this in one sitting last night because I needed a palate cleanser after reading several very long novels in a row. It's a short, wonderfully nasty little read with some fun twists and turns. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't go into much detail, except that it's about a famous writer dealing with coming up on a career-defining deadline. Also, there's possibly a beast in the basement, as the title suggests.

To give away any more would be to ruin the fun. Even though I figured out what was going on a little less than halfway through there were still a few twists and moments that kept me guessing. A wholly satisfying little horror story--especially for all you book lovers out there.

I have been struggling with how to type up this book review for Jason Arnopp's The Beast In The Basement. Not because the book was not good - it was great. But because everything I want to say is probably a spoiler.

That's not a bad thing. This book has one major turn in it that was so wonderful that I don't want to take it away from anyone else who might read it.

Although the title and synopsis makes The Beast In The Basement sound like horror, it is more of a thriller. The main character is a writer, but he is not who he seems to be. And he keeps something he refers to as The Beast in his basement. As far as the story goes, that's all I can really tell you without giving away a major plot point.

I can tell you, however, that this is one of those stories that will not only surprise you, but that you'll probably read in one sitting. Once the story gets going, it gains momentum and doesn't stop until the very end. It's also a short read that will guarantee you'll want more once it's done.

As far as the end of the novella goes, I had hoped for the opposite of what happens to happen (again, I am attempting to avoid spoilers here), but I still liked the way events finally unfolded.

As other reviews have said before me, this book is hard to review and not give away things that shouldn't be given away. That said, typically, I don't like books that rely on that kind of story twist. Usually, I figure it out and it doesn't live up even what I figured out. This one kept me guessing and even when I realized where it was going (at the time the author wanted me to) it kept me reading--actually even made me pick up speed. The book scared me in a few different ways, all of which were satisfying, but I won't say more than that. I also think it is a must read for any author, as it will pick up on a multitude of fears (some not so fun) that every writer has. However, you don't need to be a writer to love this book. Wonderful storytelling, and great creativity! Very smart--the work, forethought, and planning are clearly evident. I loved it, and think it will be a blast to read a second time to pick up on clues Arnopp may have planted. Great single sitting read. A lot of fun!!!

From the first page I assumed that the protagonist was unstable. How else can you explain a man who keeps a horrible beast in his basement? It was a delightful relief to have a storyteller whose story I couldn't completely trust, and I happily followed him along in combined hope and fear of what I would discover. Not only was I reading a brilliantly written horror tale full of startling imagery, but I was somehow also reading a detective story that gently laid out clues to the ultimate resolution of the tale. The combination of the two genres was intoxicating and held my attention right through the end.
It was a fast, engaging read, and one that left me thinking for a long time afterward. What would it take, I wonder, to push each of us to that point, where we would lock our beast in the basement?
