François Roland is thoroughly, irrepressibly French – Parisian, in fact! His book, Being French! A Frenchman’s Guide to a More Sensual Life, is a memoir as well as a collection of essays about sensuality. In it, Roland shares his own experiences and insights gained from a rich and intense sensual life, and from that perspective, the book proposes to its readers that they envision sensuality from a distinctly French point of view.
Reflecting on why he wrote the book, Roland said, “Enjoying my own sensual life enormously, I’ve always been interested in the very different ways people behave in this area of their lives. What allows some people to have satisfying, harmonious, and happy sensual lives while others are miserable and unfulfilled? And at a certain points in my life, through friendships or love affairs with foreign women (and particularly Anglo-Saxons), I came to realize that we French probably handle sensual life quite differently than people elsewhere and maybe with a better prospect of making it delightful, fulfilling, and an integral part of a full and balanced life.” It is that uniquely French spirit in all things sensual that he offers in Being French!
The book contains thirty-eight chapters, each dealing with a different facet of sensual life. Within each chapter, you’ll learn the distinctive French take on the topic, including love vs. sex, sex as we age, maintaining a happy sexual life within marriage, choosing those staples of French sensual life . . . lingerie and perfume, being beautiful, sex in cyberspace, and much, much more. His reflections are based on a mix of the author’s personal experiences, knowledge gained from interviewing others, and several years of research on the topic. Within the chapters, Roland includes relevant anecdotes, but the book also contains ten erotic vignettes, each a short story recounting a sensual episode from his own life and illustrating the elements of sensuality presented in the chapters. The book also proposes a list (with comments) of twenty movies, which provide inspiration for leading a more sensual life.
Beyond the entertainment and the erotic “frisson” that you might experience reading the racier passages of the book, as a true French insider, Roland takes your hand and leads you in a genuine and deep exploration of the French spirit and French ways in sensual matters. The ideas, insights, and sexy stories you’ll enjoy in its pages have no other goal than giving readers a new sense of what they can make free and available in their own lives. As he says in the Introduction, “In the matter of sensuality, I’ve always considered myself more a gourmet than a big eater, so my ambition in this book is to share what I’ve learned in the flow of experiences to help you extract the quintessential sensuality of life and love, which I believe has to do with the quality and richness of our sensual experiences and not their quantity and variety. At the end of the day, it’s not what can be counted, but what counts. N’est-ce pas?”
In describing sexual life at its zenith, Roland exults, “In some of these bright moments, you have the sensation of being complete at last, and maybe it gives you, as well, the deepest sense ever of your own humanity. It is life!”
This humorous, story-filled tour of the French approach to love and sex will have you laughing and saying oh là là!, but it will also show you how to embrace being sensual in the French manner.
