Sinossi

The book : “Being French! A Frenchman's Guide to a More Sensual Life”

François Roland is thoroughly, irrepressibly French – Parisian, in fact! His book, Being French! A Frenchman’s Guide to a More Sensual Life, is a memoir as well as a collection of essays about sensuality. In it, Roland shares his own experiences and insights gained from a rich and intense sensual life, and from that perspective, the book proposes to its readers that they envision sensuality from a distinctly French point of view.

Reflecting on why he wrote the book, Roland said, “Enjoying my own sensual life enormously, I’ve always been interested in the very different ways people behave in this area of their lives. What allows some people to have satisfying, harmonious, and happy sensual lives while others are miserable and unfulfilled? And at a certain points in my life, through friendships or love affairs with foreign women (and particularly Anglo-Saxons), I came to realize that we French probably handle sensual life quite differently than people elsewhere and maybe with a better prospect of making it delightful, fulfilling, and an integral part of a full and balanced life.” It is that uniquely French spirit in all things sensual that he offers in Being French!

The book contains thirty-eight chapters, each dealing with a different facet of sensual life. Within each chapter, you’ll learn the distinctive French take on the topic, including love vs. sex, sex as we age, maintaining a happy sexual life within marriage, choosing those staples of French sensual life . . . lingerie and perfume, being beautiful, sex in cyberspace, and much, much more. His reflections are based on a mix of the author’s personal experiences, knowledge gained from interviewing others, and several years of research on the topic. Within the chapters, Roland includes relevant anecdotes, but the book also contains ten erotic vignettes, each a short story recounting a sensual episode from his own life and illustrating the elements of sensuality presented in the chapters. The book also proposes a list (with comments) of twenty movies, which provide inspiration for leading a more sensual life.

Beyond the entertainment and the erotic “frisson” that you might experience reading the racier passages of the book, as a true French insider, Roland takes your hand and leads you in a genuine and deep exploration of the French spirit and French ways in sensual matters. The ideas, insights, and sexy stories you’ll enjoy in its pages have no other goal than giving readers a new sense of what they can make free and available in their own lives. As he says in the Introduction, “In the matter of sensuality, I’ve always considered myself more a gourmet than a big eater, so my ambition in this book is to share what I’ve learned in the flow of experiences to help you extract the quintessential sensuality of life and love, which I believe has to do with the quality and richness of our sensual experiences and not their quantity and variety. At the end of the day, it’s not what can be counted, but what counts. N’est-ce pas?”

In describing sexual life at its zenith, Roland exults, “In some of these bright moments, you have the sensation of being complete at last, and maybe it gives you, as well, the deepest sense ever of your own humanity. It is life!”

This humorous, story-filled tour of the French approach to love and sex will have you laughing and saying oh là là!, but it will also show you how to embrace being sensual in the French manner.

The whole book is about the authors sexual conquests. It's boring. I find the book hard to believe, and poorly written.

He has not experienced any love in his life. He uses, and explains, all the nuances, strategies and smooth talk to seduce unsuspecting women to bed, probably (something he does not explain) making promises of an everlasting friendship. Once she has been conquered, he moves on, (excuse the pun) much like a male street dog on the lookout for a bitch on heat or then a female to seduce. He is in a loveless marriage (one can see the reason why), has no family life or children, (so it appears) and literally spends his time on-line or on the street trying to satisfy this animal urge in the ?hope that maybe the next sexual encounter will bring the happiness and contention that he is sorely missing.
He has my sympathy, but I detest the belief he is trying to instill that only the French men knows about a sensual life. True sensuality only comes to the fore in true love, something he has never experienced. The word 'sensual' in his guide should be replaced with 'sexual'.
He is a real 'Don Juan', and his behaviour, as avidly explained by himself, tells me more about his personality than he would probably want me to know. I do feel sorry for the woman who married him, as the full realization of his personality as just a 'Casanova' dawned on her. Why she does not leave him, remains a mystery.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Piece of 'Fine Art' that could answer to all my senses; witty, sexy, smart, funny, charming and sensual-very delicious, indeed 26 maggio 2013

Do you agree with this

" A city is a capricious lady; it takes time so that she lets herself be seduced and completely revealed" - Paulo Coelho
(A quote from Paris and Other Loves Chapter)

I consider this book as a piece of fine art because it could answer to all my senses ; witty, sexy, smart, funny, charming and not to forget sensuel or sensual, plus its unique charm in using French language mixing with pure American or English idioms. Mmm, a very delicious book indeed.

Being French! A Frenchman's Guide to a More Sensual Life is composed of a journal of Monsieur Francois Roland.
yes, this is a book with true stories of a very charming guy who share his experiences to his readers.

Let's face this fact: A good sensual life was never something easily available to everyone or that you take from shelves in some kind of self-service shop. Fighting for it, against all kinds of constraints and boundaries, was, and still is, the standard situation for probably most people'

Well, if you have ever wonder why someone has his or her way to charm the people with all their aspects, how could someone be so loved, what is that the actual thing that you are looking for in life, what made the French guys be so sexy and so stand out when it comes to the flirtation subject (alright not all of them but most of them) , is Paris really a sensual city? Well, this book will give you the answers to all the above wonders and if not.. bon, you would find it as a very lovely company... and especially, if you ever wonder what is exactly the true meaning of beauty.. this book would emphasis that "every woman" deserves the little glimpse of sensuality, to feel (and to know that they are) sexy and deserves to be cherished as a princess.

As for gentlemen,
This book would give you the encouragement on how to reach out for the one that you may cherish for the rest of your life. Have you ever felt so regret when you didn't have enough guts to say hello to a stranger,... a perhaps.. special someone that you have only 1 minute to make a move because if not you would loose her for the rest of your life .... and yes, you would also have the access code to woman's soul.

To the writer (if he has a chance to see this)
I wish to see more of your work. I love your style of writing so much!

Therefore, may I add a personal little note to the “one star” comment?

I personal believe that the meaning of sensual is the art that could touch your or your special someone senses. It is not the art of how to lure someone into bed.
If you take sometimes and read this book "without being prejudice" you would find that this book is not talking about 'that'. It is not a Kamasutra written by French .. This is a book that would tell you how to reach women soul.

Well, would not it be good if you could increase the charm to your love one. Not everyone is born with that, I felt grateful that someone has already summed this up for me. If I were a husband to someone, I know that after I’ve finished reading this book, I’d know how to please my wife even more...

And isn't that what any good guys want, to make their wife feel as the most special lady of his life and to be the happiest lady on this earth planet. Well, if I were a man that would be definitely what I’d want.

I'm a Francophile! It's a fact! I make no apology for this, and I read every book I can get my hands on about the people, the culture and the lifestyle I've grown to love while spending time in Paris and Provence. Gradually, I'm working my way through writing reviews here of my favorites, books that have enlightened me, entertained me and sometimes even seduced me (to drink Provençal rosés [Pedaling in Provence] or sleep naked [Being French!]), books that make me feel more French just by reading them. I couldn't wait to write about Being French! A Frenchman's Guide to a More Sensual Life. It's the best of the best, IMHO.

First of all, it shares the wisdom of a life well and sensually lived and a practical understanding of life and love that is quintessentially French. I think, at heart, many French men and women must be philosophers. François Roland is no exception. It's obvious that he has thought long and deeply about some of life's most profound experiences ... those centered on sensuality. From the logical progression chapter by chapter, building the book's major themes ... the importance of freeing oneself, of being honest and having integrity in sensual matters, of living one's life fully alive ... to the personal sensual stories, some of them rather spicy, to the film recommendations at the end that capture the ideas and ideals of the book (while also providing some inspiration), this book is a pleasure to read. It's funny and warm and so very French. I absolutely devoured it!

Being French! covers the full gamut of sensual topics, which I won't list here, since you can read the table of contents in the free Kindle sample. Suffice it to say that each chapter is well-written, that topics from marriage to cybersex, are covered with humor and imagination, and that I would be hard-pressed to come up with a sensual topic the author hasn't thoughtfully addressed. I'm a little surprised that the book is only available as a Kindle, but thankfully it doesn't have the usual messy edits that some other self-published books have. I hope a publisher picks this one up.

I have a few favorite authors in this genre ... French lifestyle ... most notably Harriet Welty Rochefort, Debra Ollivier, and, more recently, Pamela Druckerman, but among what makes Being French! unique is that it's one of the few that is by an actual French person and the only one I know by a French man. And since Frenchmen are notably (or notoriously) experts on romance and love and sex, I can't think of a more authentic way to explore these matters than by reading Being French!

I felt priviledge of being allowed to read some of the stories even before they got into a book format. I've followed the "birth" of this book and was thrilled when it was out(even if i'm a slow reader:) ).

I don't like to call it a guide or manual, i think it's a collection of sensual, sexy stories. Most of the concepts are well known from everyone, unfortunally most of us don't practice them, they just stay on our wishlist waiting for some boldness, some chains breaking to accomplish them.

I've found the stories very "readable", with great sense of humour. I've found myself laughing when reading some remarks François made on the book. The quotation from each chapter is just perfect to wrap up the chapter theme. The film analogy it gives you an image of François words.

What can i say more about this book... just be bold and read it and i'm sure you wouldn't mind to be in his shoes or the ladies panties :)

Congratulations Frantzie, it's a pleasure knowing you. I'm happy for knowing that you have such a wonderful sensual life and felt like you should share it with us. Thank you :)
