Recensione

"The battles are vivid and visceral, the action brutal, the pace headlong, and Abercrombie piles the betrayals, reversals, and plot twists one atop another to keep us guessing how it will all come out. This is his best book yet." --- George R.R. Martin

"Joe Abercrombie takes the grand tradition of high fantasy literature and drags it down into the gutter, in the best possible way. Monza is a beautiful mercenary who has sworn to kill the seven men who tried to kill her. No elves, no wands - just lots of down-and-dirty swordplay." --- Time

"Abercrombie is both fiendishly inventive and solidly convincing, especially when sprinkling his appallingly vivid combat scenes with humor so dark that it's almost ultraviolet." --- Publishers Weekly

Descrizione del libro

Violent, bloody and fast-paced; this is the ultimate revenge fantasy by bestselling author Joe Abercrombie.

- The Blade Itself
- Before They are Hanged
- Last Argument of Kings

Dopo di che il celebre autore britannico si dedica alla scrittura di 3 romanzi singoli autoconclusivi che condividono alcune location e personaggi con la First Law Trilogy:

- Best Served Cold
- The Heroes
- Red Country

Springtime in Styria. And that means war.
There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white.

I had read Ambercombie's first trilogy and very much enjoyed it. I was a bit iffy about starting this one as from the reviews it was obvious that most of the main characters would not be a part of it. It is set in a different part of the world. I felt I might be a bit disappointed to miss the main characters - which had been quite developed, and worried there would not be a lot of time to have similar quality characters done in what is essentially a stand alone novel.

Having said all that, there was no need to worry. He does an excellent job putting together a couple new characters you quickly care about while pulling in a bunch of secondary character from the first trilogy. The fact that it is relatively a stand alone novel means it is very fast paced - actually I respect the author in not trying to pull this story out into another trilogy which he could have easily done. Definitly an enjoyable read that I would highly recommend and I look forward to reading the later books in this world.

yo screw Monza man. i liked her at the beginning, was thinking maybe it would be a legitimately strong female lead and not one of those "im a strong female lead that needs someone else to save me every time i get into trouble!" like most books have. i was disappointed - shes a scumbag instead lol. you do come to love Shivers in this book though which is cool. definitely read this AFTER the first law trilogy and before The Heroes and Red Country.
5.0 su 5 stelle His writing is tight, his pace breakneck, his characters memorable, all that I came to love about his first trilogy is back. 1 giugno 2017

Well, this was a hell of a ride. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a well told revenge story.

I've come to expect greatness from Mr. Abercrombie after recently finishing his First Law trilogy. Best Served Cold, the first of three books set in the world of the First Law, met that expectation and perhaps went a bit further. His writing is tight, his pace breakneck, his characters memorable, all that I came to love about his first trilogy is back in force.

Sitting back after reading this one, and reminiscing on the first trilogy, I'm left with two main thoughts. First is this. Joe will not give you what you want. He will make you want things. You will want a certain character to do X, but have a fear that they will do Y, and Joe will laugh and make them do Z. Leave what you want behind and enjoy the ride. The second is rather bleak, and it is this; if you try to change someone for the better, more often than not they'll change for the worse. Horrible right? But interesting to watch.

If you've not read it, I recommend it. I think that you could even read this one without having read the First Law, though you'd miss knowledge of plenty secondary situations and characters. I'll be diving into The Heroes very soon.

I find myself always in an awkward position when trying to review a book. Always too much time has passed since reading. But to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and series would be an understatement. I had heard of Joe Abercrombie and had planned on reading his books for many years, but never got around to doing it. There was always another book from my growing list of authors to read. I've read gifted writers, and Abercrombie ranks as one of the very best! Recently, I've been reading and listening to the audible narration, and if you haven't done that, I wholly recommend it. I don't remember ever being so entertained by both the writing of Abercrombie and the narration of Steve Pacey; had me trembling with excitement and shock while at the same time laughing out loud. I really can't give the author and this series enough stars.

Just finished reading it, the best of Mr. Abercrombie's books so far ( First Law Trilogy and this one, Best Served Cold ). Loved the humor! Amazing ability to weave such hilarity with extreme violent content - felt he was writing to me specifically. This kind of dark humor is right up my alley. Morveer was simply brilliantly written, demonstrating pointedly how we all can view the world completely disconnected from our view of ourselves with Morveer routinely criticizing that which he is most damnably guilty of himself. Simply delicious. Hard to make me laugh and for this read I caught myself laughing out loud. In my humble, amateur opinion, Mr. Abercrombie is getting better the more he writes. Can't really compare this single work with his epic First Law, but the attention to the personalities/psychologies brought this work to life in a special way. Really felt like I knew the characters and the circumstances were very believable, something so many works suffer. The plot was not contrived, but grew with a life of its own. Very cool, fun stuff to read - exciting, funny, different, but not overly complicated. It takes real talent to relay something this complex without the reader having to study the thing as you might with an obscure philosopher. Reminds me of greats such as Dan Simmons ( completely different writing, of course, but that beautiful ability to understand without boredom - takes a real talent to pull that off ). If you want to have a lot of fun reading something, this is the book for you ( though not necessary, there are references to the first 3 books - not obvious in some parts which puts a smile on my face - like the author is giving us a wink at some references to see if we can pick up on them ). When's the movie coming out?
