Sinossi

In this International Book Awards anthology finalist, Andrew Barger has unearthed the very best vampire short stories from the first half of the 19th century from long forgotten journals and magazines. They are collected for the first time in this groundbreaking book on the origins of vampire lore.

The cradle of all vampire short stories in the English language is the first half of the 19th century. Andrew Barger combed forgotten journals and mysterious texts to collect the very best vintage vampire stories from this crucial period in vampire literature. In doing so, Andrew unearthed the second and third vampire stories originally published in the English language, neither printed since their first publication nearly 200 years ago. Also included is the first vampire story originally written in English by John Polidori after a dare with Lord Byron and Mary Shelley. The book contains the first vampire story by an American who was a graduate of Columbia Law School. The book further includes the first vampire stories by an Englishman and German, including the only vampire stories by such renowned authors as Alexander Dumas, Théophile Gautier and Joseph le Fanu. As readers have come to expect from Andrew, he has added his scholarly touch to this collection by including story backgrounds, author photos and a foreword titled "With Teeth."

1819 The Vampyre - John Polidori (1795-1821)
1823 Wake Not the Dead - Ernst Raupach (1784-1852)
1848 The Vampire of the Carpathian Mountains - Alexander Dumas (1802-1870)
1839 Strange Event in the Life of Schalken the Painter - Joseph le Fanu (1814-1873)
1826 Pepopukin in Corsica - Arthur Young (1741-1820)
1819 The Black Vampyre: A Legend of Saint Domingo - Robert C. Sands (1799-1832)
1836 Clarimonde - Théophile Gautier (1811-1872)

5.0 su 5 stelle An Amazing Collection 8 febbraio 2013

I am one of those "hollywood" vampire fans. From the 1931 movie based on Bram Stoker's "Dracula", I grew up enjoying these types of vampire stories. And, yes, I am a Twilight fan as well. However, to go back two hundred years, to the early 1800's and read the very first stories of vampires (vampyre) was absolutely amazing.

This book provided detailed background information including much about Poe, Lord Byron and Mary Shelley. Also, I learned so much more about people I had not hear of since high school such as John Polidori, Ernst Raupach, Arthur Young, Robert C. Sands and others. The combination of historical details and vampire literature created a wonderful, entertaining anthology.

I am sure other readers are more learned than I am, but from this "hollywood vampire" fan's perspective, this anthology was so much more interesting and dramatic. To add to that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the older literature; there is a way that the words seemingly transport the reader back to a time of poetic romance and mystery that is often missing from current literature.

The book was interesting to read. History of the authors and back ground information of each story was given. We were told about old English being used. The stories were hard to follow at times and at points I did not know what was being talked about. It did relate how the stories of vampires started. They have come a long way.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Necessary Anthology of those that came before! 6 febbraio 2013

A breath of old historical air I was blown away as this anthology ushered me back to the early 18th century. These bone-chilling accounts are laid out and will leave any vampire fan lusting page after page.

The founding fathers that were all but forgotten have been reincarnated by Andrew Barger. I enjoyed this book, as I will reluctantly admit I was a novice to these early accounts. However, steadfastly the author provides some cryptic accounts of some dusty old tales that were originally told. I now come away almost perplexed to think the current crowd of authors capitalizing of an apparent evolution might have gone profoundly wrong. The Best Vampire Stories for me was necessarily refreshing.

I really like his introductions, they're hilarious. I was thinking of making an anthology myself and I have a similar writing style. His story selection is good too especially the short story by Sands called "The Black Vampyre." Great pick up!

Honestly, I haven't read all this book. I use it as a back up when I have nothing us to read.
