Descrizione prodotto

After giving up her tail for an international banker, Isabella of the Mediterranean kingdom is aged, weathered, and abandoned on the fog-drenched shores of southwest England. She faces her human journey as a plain and practically destitute fifty-three-year-old woman.

With the help of a magic tablet and online mermaid support, she reinvents herself as a career counselor, motivational speaker, and writer of self-help books. Along the way, she encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, among them former mermaids, supportive and not-so-supportive women, deserving and undeserving men, and several New Agers. As Isabella evolves into Barbara Davies, she embraces her middle-aged body, heals her bruised heart, and learns to love again.

This contemporary version of The Little Mermaid offers hope and inspiration to anyone who has been dumped, deceived, or demoted. It will also appeal to mermaid enthusiasts.

5.0 su 5 stelle So happy to have made the time to sit and read ... 23 aprile 2015

Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
So happy to have made the time to sit and read this fantastic story that is not simply about a mermaid, but rather a mermaid, who's been sentenced to live as a 50 something year old woman, on land to boot, as punishment for her disobedience under the sea.
Barbara made me smile on so many occasions, from not having a clue how to be human, to struggling with asking for help every time she turned around - to overcoming what many of her kind may have considered a negative situation, and becoming the independent woman who didn't necessarily needed a man to survive, or anyone else for that matter, but rather found love and so much more, as she reinvents herself and adapts to life on land. Loved this so much from Ms. Guidoccio and am rather looking forward to seeing what else she brings us in the future.

4.0 su 5 stelle Fantastic contemporary mermaid story! 13 dicembre 2013
Di TrinaADR - Pubblicato su

Between Land and Sea is Joanne Guidoccio debut novel and is a contemporary version of The Little Mermaid.

I found the story to be a fascinating take on mermaids. In Isabella’s world there are different types of mermaids. Isabella is a “Bella”, which is perfection in beauty and brains. When she decides to not take over her grandmother’s position in the mermaid society so she can be with a human, her grandmother tosses her out and into a body of a 52-year-old size 16 human. It’s a shock for Isabella as she was very young and gorgeous. Now known as Barbara Davies she has one year to get financially secure. In the mermaid world that means find a man to support you. And with Isabella/Barbara’s age and imperfect body that will be no easy task.

I found Between Land and Sea to be empowering for women. There are many positive messages like: it’s never to late to change, you have the power within you to change your life, you don’t have to depend on anyone (like a man).

The Between Land and Sea is not preachy in any way though, you find Barbara stumbling through life and making the same mistakes most women do in love and work. Barbara has the same challenges we all do plus she’s adapting to human life. She had special powers as a mermaid but all that remains is a special “spark” of her old life; her ability to tell stories. And it’s an ability that she hones in on and uses in a very positive way which I loved.

Barbara meets other mermaids that have given up their tail for the human world. One of my favorite characters in the book is Kendra, also a former mermaid. She’s the owner of a “New Age” business and provides readings and insight into people’s lives and that includes Barbara but she doesn’t want to hear it. Will Barbara succeed on her own with out the help of a man? Will she find a man to take care of her? Or will she become completely destitute and homeless? Those are her options. You’ll have to read it to find out!!

I would love to hear more about the mermaid world and would definitely enjoy reading a prequel or sequel to Between Land and Sea. I think Joanne is a fantastic writer, the way this story is told I can imagine a tailless mermaid wandering the frigid streets in a tiny town in Canada. Desperately trying to figure out her life right now as we speak. It seriously made we want to snuggle into warm PJ’s with a cup of cocoa while reading the book. Considering I live in Florida and it’s December and 81 frickin degrees here, that’s pretty damn realistic writing. Brrr Canada.

4.0 su 5 stelle Mermaid stranded in a 53 year old body reinvents herself. 19 settembre 2013
Di Susan J. Berger - Pubblicato su
Formato: Formato Kindle
A mermaid stranded in a fifty-three year old woman's body reinvents herself as a lovely successful woman.
It's a fun concept. In the world Joanne Giudoccio invented inBetween Land and Sea , many mermaids sacrificed their lives as mermaids for love of a man. Isabella was sent to land as a punishment for disobedience.
Isabella, who is given a new identity as a middle aged overweight woman named Barbara, is determined to succeed on her own terms without the support of a man.
I followed Isabella's adventures with great interest as, with the help of a magic tablet and a numbers mermaid, she learned to survive in her new environment.
The adventure is absorbing. Along the way, Barbara tames her new body and finds romance.
A very enjoyable read. Thanks, Joanne.

4.0 su 5 stelle Interesting story of learning, adaptation, and growth 18 settembre 2013
Di C.D. Hersh - Pubblicato su
Formato: Formato Kindle
Joanne Guidoccio's book, Between Land and Sea is the story of a woman's journey. Not a typical journey as Isabella, aka Barbara Davies, was a mermaid. She is human now, on her own, her only lifeline a face on a tablet to connect to her past and give her guidance and assistance on how to cope on land in the small town of Carden, Canada. This once proud, eternally youthfully mermaid must now deal with a rather frumpy, middle age, overweight body. If she fails to find a mate within a year, when the electronic lifeline and free rent expires, she will be forced to fend for herself. This is a very interesting story of learning, adaptation, and growth as Barbara deals with her past mistakes and learns to live among humankind on her own.
