5.0 su 5 stelle Brought back bittersweet memories. 25 marzo 1999
Di Un cliente - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
I recently picked up this book at the library and I must say that the best things really do come in small packages. I laughed a lot and even cried a little. Being a black woman and having spent a few years of my upbringing surrounded by family in the South, I could relate to so much of what Ms. Youngblood wrote about. Even now, visiting my relatives conjures up bittersweet memories of a very complicated time in our nation's history. Her stories were right on the money in describing the strength of black women and is a tribute to Big Mamas everywhere, including mine.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Welcoming Embrace 18 marzo 2013
Di Christine Irving, author Magdalene A.D. - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
Reading Shay Youngblood's "Big Mamas" is like stepping into a welcoming embrace. The Big Mamas are grandmothers, who each abide by their own particular brand of wisdom. Confronted with a motherless child they take her under their wings. The women are all different, stamped with distinctive styles and personalities. The mix is sometimes overwhelming, sometimes confusing to their adopted granddaughter, but a singular thread of love binds their stories together and weaves them into a vivid tapestry. I grew up in a small nuclear family. Because we moved around all the time I was growing up, I missed the feeling of roots and kinship portrayed so eloquently and lovingly by Shay Youngblood. I'm so grateful she gifted us with her experience.

5.0 su 5 stelle As all-American as Mark Twain from a unique perspective 14 dicembre 2011
Di Erik T. Bartley - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
I was raised by a grandmother from the South and I found this book to be very reflective of not only the language and culture of the 1960's but of my life growing up in the 80's as well. The short stories were beautifully written and while even though some of them are no more than one or two sentences long this book stands out in my head as one of the most all-American books of all time, akin to Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer" novel.

From a series of short stories one gains a collage of life in this "project town". The stories are filled with humor and an underlying current of resilience and hope. Definitely a great American novel and one of the best works of the Harlem Renaissance! Definitely recommended reading...

It was very hay for me when this book came to an end. I wanted more of the great stories told by members of the family about the main characters astranged mother. I went through a similar experience as a child and I remember clearly the tale told to me by great aunts and uncles, Nanny's shop and in Old photos. This book was recommended to me by a poetry professor. I'm thankful she did.
