Book Description:
The John Reeves Creed: "Kill them with kindness. Unless you have a gun."
John Reeves drives to Myrtle Beach hoping to repair a damaged relationship with his fiancée. Instead, he finds her unconscious in the hospital, the victim of an unexplained explosion at a local restaurant.
Reeves meets Billy Hitchings, a teenager who knows more about the explosion than he should. Their questions lead to an ancient legacy best left alone.
Pulled into yet another crossfire, John Reeves fights to protect his friends and keep a primeval power from falling into the wrong hands.

In fact I think the John Reeves character is not clearly enough drawn and developed, and lacks necessary depth to host a series of mysteries. All the elements are present but not combined into a satisfactory whole. Lack of development is probably the key.
The plot requires work: the plates, Cherokee element, Billy's super power usage, almost all the relationships, Jarrett's actions being too much for his motive, the poor ending etc., all require more explanation, logic or need fleshing out.
Many of the story elements seemed to lead nowhere or fizzle away. Kelly, Amfar and a couple of minor characters seem to promise more but could equally be written round or struck off. I felt the whole storyline could be fined down and what was left given more volume. I continually had the feeling this writer could do better.

The story moves fast but is full of detail that allows you to paint a very detailed picture of the scenes and you find yourself getting involved with the characters and caring about what might happen to them. Even dealing with an obviously fictional subject at the end you find yourself wondering if something like this could happen - well, I did anyway!
I'll certainly be keen to read more of Kirkus Macgowan's work and I can only hope it is up to the standard of The Fall of Billy Hitchings - a high bar has been set.

Some of the dialogue is heavy going but this doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the book.

I like a good detecive/mystery novel and some pushing of the boudaries of technology is fine (as we have in the opening scene) but the "ending" is so false as to undermine any good that has been done in the rest of the novel. I won't be looking for the next by Kirkus MacGowan
