What Vicente doesn't expect to find in San Francisco is Violet McQueen, the woman's twenty-year old daughter. Soon his wants turn into a sexual obsession, one that sweeps Violet into his games as they fall madly, deeply in love with each other, the type of first love that can drive a person mad.

4.0 su 5 stelle a delicious, thrilling romantic storyline that will consume both seasoned Halle fans and brand new readers 19 febbraio 2017

I'll preface by telling you that Black Hearts is 100% a standalone novel. (Well, sort of... it's the beginning of a duet. But you DO NOT need any backstory before you start reading.) Vicente Bernal and Violet McQueen take the reader on their journey of uncovering their family history and unearthing all the ways their parents were connected in another life. If you've never read a single book by Karina Halle before, you can start here without missing a thing because you'll come to know the truth right along with this new generation of characters. (But seriously though, who even are you if you haven't read her books yet?!)

If you've previously read The Artist's Trilogy and the Dirty Angels series, you're familiar with the twisted, violent nature of the world you're about to step back in to. If Black Hearts is your first Karina Halle book, I'll tell you that you're about to be absorbed into a world of treachery and lust where criminals fall in love and lie and betray and kill, where loyalties are tested and bullets speak louder than words. Either way, brace, because you're in for a brutally delicious little treat with Black Hearts, a darkly intoxicating story that bridges generations when the children of former lovers meet for their own story of love and betrayal.

I'm over the moon that Karina Halle has introduced us to these characters in such an unexpectedly brilliant way. I mean, is this really happening right now? In some sick twist of fate, could a Bernal and a Watt FINALLY find true love amidst lies and violence and secrets and betrayal? Is history repeating itself, or righting itself by uniting a violent, power hungry cartel leader with a strong, feisty young woman unknowingly brought into the fold of debauchery and deceit by the lies of her parents? I could die a happy death if this plays out the way I'm hoping. (Because Team Javier FOREVER!) But I know Karina Halle, she's done this to me before. I know nothing is certain. I know these characters are inherently bad. I know money and lust and power and greed always trump love. So what will come of these characters is anyone's guess.

Despite the depravity and the despicable behavior in these pages, I found myself giggling hard in certain scenes. The first time Mama McQueen meets the man in her daughter's life was especially hilarious, a sudden, sharp reminder of what a versatile writer Karina Halle is. This book is peppered with humor, layered with unexpected eroticism, woven with violence and deceit, and charged with romance. It's a delicious, thrilling romantic storyline that will consume both seasoned Halle fans and brand new readers. This story will piece together history while simultaneously breaking trusts and breaking hearts. Black Hearts is a brilliantly complex web that will ensnare the reader whether you're privy to their history or not. No matter what you know, or think you know, Black Hearts is a fresh new, untold story that will satisfy every reader and leave you ravenous for more.

I've read just about all of Karina Halle's books at this point, and I've never connected with a character like I did with Violet. Not even my beloved Perry. In fact, I haven't connected with a character like that maybe ever. The way Karina wrote her was beautiful. Complex, sensitive, and yearning. But strong. I am smitten.

Anyhow, now that I got that off my chest, on to the rest of the book. Vicente is predictably swoon-worthy but unpredictable in every other way. You've gotta keep your eye on that one. The romance and steam was just right, the curves in the story kept you flipping the pages. It's dark, but not overly so. More suspenseful. I could see it playing like a movie in my mind, and that is my favorite thing about KH's writing.

You don't have to read the The Artists Trilogy or Dirty Angels series beforehand (but you should because they're awesome). There will be a second book coming in March, but it doesn't leave you on a crazy cliffhanger. Go forth and one-click now! You won't regret it.

Looking for a little Suspenseful Romance? Then you've come to the right place. This complete standalone duet hits the floor running and doesn't stop. Even with the slight cliffhanger we are left with (because this is a duet afterall, you can't wrap it all up in ONE book), it flows and ends perfectly. From the beginning to end, my heart beat quickened up at places and had me questioning all the players involved. While this is Vincente and Violet's story, it seems their parents are going to be playing a big role in how this story plays out.
" far ahead in the future as you might be, the past is never far behind. You just have to look over your shoulder."
We begin the story with parts of our black hearts in Mexico and California. Little morsels of their past show up and make them question who they are and who their parents were. With a past tied to the present, all this comes to a steamy head in San Francisco. And boy does it get steamy and fast. Vicente is cocky and knows what he's doing. He is his father's son after all. And he will get what he's come for.
"I should drop the charade. But I don't drop anything. I'm becoming the charade."
But Violet isn't as soft and dependent on her parents as we think. She is tough and can fight for herself. She doesn't need the hero to fly in because the can protect herself. She's looking for answers, but amidst the questions she has of the lies that have surrounded her her whole life, she is finding parts of herself that she hasn't discovered before. And Vicente is doing a very good job of breaking that bird free.
"You want it to be about just you and just me? Then you come away with me. You leave their bs and their lies behind and you become the Violet McQueen you were always meant to be. You become free."
Vicente and Violet are hot and full of lots of sexiness. Those scenes were pure, unadulterated dirty fun. But under the blindfolds and rope is a game being set in motion with a past full of lies. And to see it play out is darn torture. I don't know what is going to happen to these characters and their families, but I honestly can't wait to see what will come to head in book 2. Strong male and female characters makes this book fun, but tortuous. I have a feeling Karina is going to torture us a bit more, but can't wait to see it all blow up. This is what she does best.
Be prepared for the ride, but expect the unexpected. Loved this book, but honestly can't wait for book 2 which comes out on March 17th. All the lies and all the families are going to face one another for a standoff that I can't wait to see.

4.0 su 5 stelle I loved the sh** out of this book 19 marzo 2017

"And as far ahead in the future as you might be, the past is never far behind."

Unofficial review: I loved the sh** out of this book. Black Hearts reminds me of the gritty and bold Karina Halle that I first fell for. From the moment I heard about this new series and who it was about, I knew I had to get my hands on this. Karina didn't disappoint. Black Hearts was an intense, sexy, and action packed story.

Yes, Black Hearts is a spin off of Karina's The Artist Trilogy and Dirty Angels. Vicente Bernal is the son of Javier Bernal and Violet McQueen is the daughter of Ellie Watt and Camden McQueen. Yes, Ellie, Camden, and Javier all make appearances in this novel but YOU DO NOT, need to read the other series to appreciate this one. Though, I will say for T.A.T fans like me, their appearances made this story much more fun.

"If Helen of Troy’s face could launch a thousand ships, Violet McQueen’s face could launch a thousand stories, all filled with lust, heartache, and death."

Vicente Bernal and Violet Queen are two people from completely different backgrounds. While their lives are completely different, it is their parents pasts that have them unknowingly connected. Vicente is a the son of a Mexican drug lord. He's set to take over his father's business, but Vicente wants to do things in his own way. Vicente and Javier, were alike in many ways. Both were ladies men, and both could be ruthless, cunning, and persuasive. Yet, Vicente had a somewhat softer side to him. Something that felt a bit more real and caring then Javier's own personality. Though he has seen the world, Vicente has been somewhat sheltered in his life. When he comes across a few secrets from his father's past, it leads him to San Francisco and to Violet.

Violet is a college student in San Francisco, studying photography. It's her passion, her love, but she's still finding her way. Her mom is a popular photographer and her dad is a tattoo artist. Growing up her parents were a bit unconventional and bit overprotective. Violet was a character that took me a bit to warm up to. She was young and sheltered in some ways. She could also be a bit naive at times. Yet, I liked her. She was just a normal girl trying to figure out her life. Meeting Vincente was an unexpected adventure in her otherwise normal life.

"He made me step away from myself. He pulled me out of that prison. He opened my eyes to a reality I didn’t think I could be a part of. He made my weaknesses my strengths. He made it raw and beautiful. I don’t see how my life can possibly go back to normal after this."

There is a definite spark between Violet and Vicente. Their relationship happens quickly and it's so intense. They had some scorching hot moments together. Vicente pushed her boundaries and gave her the chance to explore new things. Even though his initial intentions were not pure, he does have true feelings for Violet. Violet doesn't want anything from Vicente, other than himself. She easily captured his heart. They don't have the most conventional relationship but they were so good together.

I am excited to see what will come of their relationship. This story blended both the good deeds with the bad and the lies with the truth. I loved the mix of action and suspense. I was so wrapped up in this story that I didn't want to put it down. This story left me needing more. Thankfully, Dirty Souls will be out next month and I can not wait to see how this will all play out.

When they mentioned in the description that this new standalone duet would get your pulse racing, they were not kidding. Initially, the things that first attracted me to this book was the amazing cover and description of the story. There was just something about the premise of the story that I couldn't ignore and had to read. This book didn't disappoint. Before reading this book I honestly wasn't sure what to expect because I had been so used to this author's other romances. But I was very interested in trying some of her other work for a change. I have never read her Artists and Dirty Angels series. Now after reading Black Hearts, I will be definitely checking out these books. Karina has completely blown me away with this dark and twisted romance that I couldn't get enough of. I was so captivated by Vincente and Violet's romance that I literally finished this story in a matter of hours. In opinion, Black Hearts is one of those types of books that you're unable to put down and will have you hooked from beginning to end. I just didn't want this story to end and I'm looking forward to the next installment in this duet. Seriously, I am still reeling from that cliffhanger! There were so many twists and turns in this story that I had a hard time keeping up. The storyline will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. In addition, there are still so many unanswered questions and I'm very curious to see how Vincente and Violet's story will unfold.
