5.0 su 5 stelle The real story of Vietnam as told by a soldier who fought there, not the media. 16 aprile 2014
Di Cruizer - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
From the moment I began reading 1SG Steen's story, I found it hard to put the book down. This book almost puts you in the middle of the battles the soldiers of Black Knight Alfa fought and there were many. Despite being out numbered on most missions, the soldiers of Black Knight Alfa fought bravely, courageously, but most of all they fought wisely. Using their enemy's tactics against them, the men of Black Knight Alfa outfoxed and defeated their enemy. The speed at which they humped the bush, the mountains and flatland in order to ambush their enemy was superhuman. Their patrol of the Ay Shau Valley was nothing short of a miracle. A miracle that they could bring so much death and destruction to the enemy while keeping their movements secret. One can almost feel the heat and humidity of the jungle as 1SG Steen tells his soldier's story in that God forbidden valley.
1SG Steen truly loves his brave soldiers. He is certainly an NCO who who knows what it means to be an NCO. Never an easy job but a job that is very rewarding if done correctly always placing the soldiers first.
God Bless you men of the Black Knight Alfa (alpha and omega) wherever you might be today. You were victorious! Thank you for your service.

5.0 su 5 stelle Great book! 13 febbraio 2014
Di Manford Brown - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
I purchased this book after reading the American Legion article about the author and this book. Although the book is listed as fiction, the author says that it is a true story with only the names of the main characters being changed. Steen was a career soldier and retired after 30 years in the U.S. Army and three tours in Vietnam. While I only did one tour there I can relate to his feelings about the biased coverage from the news media and negative treatment after returning home. Unlike most books I have read about Vietnam this one paints a more positive image of the soldier. Instead of being dope smoking incompetents he shows that his unit and the people he fought with were dedicated professional soldiers. I would have been proud to have served with Steen.
Apparently the book is no longer in print but I managed to purchase a used copy through Amazon.

I can't stand it. 22% in and can't read on. We have top who on every page says his troops and company is the best. They all can smell, taste and sense the enemy. All of them. He states none of his troops ever complain. If you have a grunt that doesn't complain, you've got problems. That's not normal. Both top and the CO cry, but not about their own troops. I don't know which army he served in. Sure isn't the one we all served in.

4.0 su 5 stelle Very good boots on the ground story telling 22 febbraio 2014

I like the writing style and strait forward storylines. The use of the real language used by soldiers, military acronyms and slang as the stories in each chapter are told pulls you into the story. I'm really glad I was fortunate to catch an article written in the American Legion magazine that intrigued me to buy this book. We'll done!
3.0 su 5 stelle A good read but a little repetitive 3 maggio 2014

While the overall story is very good in that it truly reveals what the troops on the ground went through, the narrative gets a bit repetitive with each mission. The author is constantly praising his outfit and explaining how great they are. While I have no doubt his praise is well deserved the reader does not need to be constantly reminded of the fact. That being said as a veteran myself I greatly appreciate and am thankful for the efforts of the men in Black Khight Alpha.
