Rick Talbot is a person who likes to think about the "big questions" in life. Questions like, is there a God, what does it mean to be human, and does it even matter. He likes to work through his ideas by writing fiction. Rick lives in Toronto with his wife and a little black & white dog.

5.0 su 5 stelle Gracefully gritty and as real as life itself. 20 aprile 2013

'Breaking Young Divinities' begins like a sun-drenched summer morning...warm, inviting, beckoning you to come out and play. The young characters draw you into their adventures and, as you race between the buildings of the housing projects they call home, it is easy to overlook the moments when the darker side of reality is revealed. However, it is impossible to ignore such moments completely (they seem to scratch at your soul even if you wish they could be forgotten) and, as the main character emerges into young adulthood, they swiftly unite to shatter the buoyancy of his youth and plunge him into a heartbreakingly honest quest to make sense of the world that swirls about him. I found myself unable to resist turning the pages of this book, as though I couldn't exhale until I knew where the main character's journey through the raw grittiness of his new reality would take him. It is also hard to believe that Talbot's characters are imagined and not real as they each seem to resonate as realistically as that dream you awaken from and can hardly believe you didn't just live. In all, this book was immensely captivating and, like life itself, at times both overwhelmingly bleak and beautiful.
5.0 su 5 stelle Pondering the Great Questions of Life... 15 luglio 2013

This book is a must read for anyone who grew up in less than advantageous circumstances. It is a coming of age tale that is depicted in downtown Toronto housing projects beginning in the 80's. It is written from the perspective of a bright and intelligent but naive and somewhat introspective young boy who questions life and jumps feet first into some situations that are beyond his years. The author writes cleverly and poetically and at times is quite edgy as he takes the reader on adventures with him by providing imagery that is so detailed it paints pictures of his years from playground mischief to University and finally in to Institutions all the while letting you right into his mind.

There is sarcasm and humour, as well as unexpected plot twists throughout the book. There is also adult content involving drug use and sex, so I would recommend this book to the more mature reader. It is definitely recommended to anyone who faced challenges growing up or anyone who questions the world in which we live and seeks intelligent answers to the ways of humanity will appreciate this book.

I liked this book so much I would like to see it worked in to the High School curriculum for grade 12 English. It is also a great read for those whom like to self-reflect.

"By Gods measure my life is worth less than a drop of water in the ocean." This is just one of the many great phrases in this novel that makes you stop and think. This book is not for the faint at heart or those who haven't experienced the trials and tribulations of life - it is for those of us who fight every struggle in life and know that some things must be accepted and some things we can overcome. I couldn't stop reading. I travelled every step of the way with the main character. Starting from his boyhood with his childhood friends outside climbing fences and just having a lot of fun, we travelled through school, university and the adult world. This book will cause you to look at life and perhaps open up your mind to perceiving life from another perspective. It was a rollercoaster ride. A great read with a good ending that made me think deeply about life. I highly recommend it.

As an avid reader, I find that I tend to gravitate towards certain authors because I like their style and/or main characters. Occasionally, I will veer from the norm and try something new. The first few pages determine whether I will walk away from the book or give it a fair shake. I had no issue with carrying on with Breaking Young Divinities. The main character's heart-breaking honesty had me wanting to know more. I felt as though I had been transported back in time to my own young adulthood and was not-so-subtly reminded of the challenges and angst that plague the young. Not only does this book make you want to hear the tale of the protagonist, it makes you identify and think on some of your own challenges, heartbreaks and choices.

As a former crisis worker in downtown Toronto I found this book to be a realistic depiction of life for those who through happenstance, banish themselves to the street. There is an honest innocence about the story of this boy that provides some insight into those children who struggle with rewarding their curiosity in a stark world.
The book is raw, sad, revealing and the story is compelling. It ends too early -I would like to have some more of the story here. A book that I have thought a number of times about since I have finished reading it.
