For several years Odessa St. Clair has fought for every breath she has taken. Wracked with consumption Odessa's father sends her and her brother Dominic and her sister Moira to Colorado to "chase the cure" as thousands of others have done before her.

The sanatorium where Odessa stays is renowned for their progress with consumptives. Before long Odessa is able to meet her fellow consumptives. Bryce McAllan is a handsome young man, owner of a horse farm, convalescing and hoping to return to his horses soon. Sam is an older gentleman that likes to play matchmaker.

Dominic and Moira are settling into the town hoping to open a bookstore for their father's publishing company. It doesn't take long for them to meet the Sheriff and run into trouble. Sheriff Bannock has set his eyes on Moira and is determined to have her. Moira is not a woman to be owned though. Her only desire is to sing in front of an audience, but the men in her life seem to thwart her at every turn.

It doesn't take long for the three St. Clair's to realize that while Colorado has wonderful healing powers for Odessa, it also offers more danger than any of them anticipated.

I really liked the characters in Breathe. I liked that the St. Clair's were strong and independent. Even though they were young and had never been on their own before they each have a sense of who they are and have no desire to be run over by anyone or anything. Have you ever been afraid to turn the page in a book for fear of what will happen to the character next? That is the way I felt while reading Breathe! There were so many times that I needed to take a break because I was afraid of what was going to come next, but then found myself going back to it so I could find out! The characters were written so well that you could feel their emotions, which made it a bit hard to read where the Sheriff was concerned. From the moment he is introduced the reader knows there is something "not right" about him. His evilness leaps off the page and has the reader wishing that the St. Clair's can pack up bag and baggage and run!

Breathe is the first book in the Homeward Trilogy and I'm looking forward to reading Dominic and Moira's stories in Sing and Claim.

Excellent story. Young lady sent west to Colorado by her father with her brother and sister for her last chance at life due to her having TB. The family had lost the mother of the family as well as several of the children and Colorado seemed to be the only chance. The brother was to look out for the two sisters as the one tried to heal. The West becomes a new home for the three with many new discoveries, both good and bad. This changes all three siblings lives completely as they meet new friends, both good and bad people. This book is very exciting, never a dull moment. It does have a Christian theme but also has excitement, mystery, romance, etc. I highly recommend. Looking forward to next book.

I was reluctant to read this at first, it had been on my Kindle for several months. Then Amazon offered "Sing" for $.01 and I bought it because I love to read stories from Lisa Tawn Bergren. I was hooked from the first chapter as I have had lung cancer and could relate to the feelings Odessa had when she thought she would die from lack of air. I also fell in love with the Hero, who had a similar condition TB? Or black lung disease? Anyway he loved The Lord and was always there for Odessa. The book has both Dominick and Moira's (her sibling's )stories. I'm glad they both get their own book. There is so much tragedy in all their lives, but since they are part of a very prestigious family, The St.Claires of Philadelphia they somehow manage to meet the right people and get help . There was a lot of history surrounding Colorado Springs and the sanitariums that were built for consumptive patients in the late 19th century while there was so much lawlessness because of the claim jumpers for the silver mines. I cried when their friends were killed and again when The Lord spoke to Odessa and told her the way to survive. She was such a great heroine and loved so much. I was so pleased they got a HEA. I enjoy reading Lisa T Bergren's books, they have a great story line, enough suspense to keep you a bit on the edge, and a spiritual touch as well. This book was no different, although it wasn't my favorite of all of her books. The story is set in the 1880's and centers around three siblings who are sent out west from Philadelphia by their father to seek a cure for consumption for the oldest daughter Odessa. In the midst of finding healing, Odessa finds a mystery and love in the form of another consumptive patient. This was a light, quick read.
