Cornell Woolrich, along with Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain, was one of the creators of the noir genre. He is the author of many seminal works including REAR WINDOW, the basis of the 1954 Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly.

2.0 su 5 stelle 2 stars for me. 3 or more stars for mystery lovers. 30 dicembre 2016

This was written in 1940. Most of the story is a series of scenes where a mysterious woman kills several men. Example: the first murder shows a woman trying to get inside Bliss’s apartment but the doorman stops her. She shows up at a party. Several men try to talk to her but she rebuffs them until she can get Bliss out on the balcony where she pushes him.

During these murder scenes I was not intrigued with her character. I needed her character to be more developed, maybe showing her thoughts and emotions. Her motive is the big mystery which we learn at the end of the book. It was not fun to watch her - I’m not sure why - just mysterious murders happening. There was no investigator that I could enjoy watching - or be impressed with his smart actions. Instead there was a brief summary of police facts at the end of each murder with an unsolved case. I suppose mystery lovers might like seeing the intricate method the woman used to kill each man. For me it was sad, watching a nice guy, knowing he would be killed.

I read 46%, did not care to continue, so I jumped to the end and read the last part. There was a tell-all at the end that explained everything. A cop did something interesting at the end.

For those who want happy endings, I will say there was justice for the murderer in the end.

Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 232 to 256 pages. Swearing language: moderate. Sexual content: none in the parts I read. Setting: unknown, probably around 1940 in a U.S. city. Copyright: 1940. Genre: noir crime fiction, mystery thriller.

Perhaps my favorite work of noir, and certainly Woolrich's finest.
