For me, the name Dante conjured up two images. The first was the epic depictions of Hell from Dante's Inferno, with people burning for their sins. The second image was a sexual depiction. I don't know where it came from, but as far back as I can remember, I had always associated the name Dante with a beautiful and sexy man. I'd imagined a dark-haired, dark-eyed, gorgeous lothario, the type who could capture a woman's heart with just one look. Dante was the Fabio of my generation, the heartthrob that got women's hearts beating fast, made us want this man to rip our clothes off and to throw us onto the bed.

Little did I know that the Dante that walked into my life was very different from the one I'd imagined. Oh, he was dark-haired, dark-eyed, gorgeous, even a lothario ... just ... he wasn't a man. Instead, he was someone who was going to send me to the Hell his namesake had written about.

And I was his teacher.

Dante Rata a 15-year old boy who grew up fast due to life’s experiences. A troubled kid to everyone… exudes sexiness without really trying... a talented guy with a great singing voice and good in poetry. This young man is deep, beyond his years and he like his new English teacher.

Clara Hatton is happy that finally she's going to be a full time teacher; little did she know that she’ll be assigned to a rowdy group of student, it’s like all the “rejects” are gathered together in her class. But Clara won’t allow to be intimidated by these students. She had to let them know that she’s in charge and they’ll have to listen to her. Listen they did, well, some of them, but one particular student is always challenging her patience, Dante. The moment Clara laid eyes on Dante there's an instant attraction, but she must dismiss it because it’s wrong, besides being a teacher to him, she’s married. Will she be able to suppress her feeling towards Dante?

This book gave me the feel of a great series in the making. The characters are raw… the pacing is good… the plot is well defined. I also enjoyed reading about the relationship of Dante & Clara to their family.

Marita A. Hansen is a new author to me and she didn’t disappoint in writing a good story and I'm looking forward to the next book of this series and excited to see what will happens next.

Sigh. Finally writing my review on this book.
It's been over two weeks and I still haven't recovered from whatever this book did to me. Ugh, I am still incoherent as it seems that my mind won't accept the fact that I finished it.Over one day. One freaking day. I mean, come one, books this good should be lengthier. 291 pages are nearly not enough for me.
Anyway, enough with complaints. Time to talk about the good stuff.
So I was book-hunting as usual when I came across it. One the best moments of my life, I've got to add. It immediately caught my eye. It was more the title than the cover. It gave of this feeling that I can't quite describe. And then I read the synopsis.Truly addictive.
I didn't expect me to like since I don't really like teacher/student relationships mainly because of the age gap thing.
But in this book we don't have the usual beautiful and smart girl who falls for the young, good-looking male teacher who even though is self-contained can't help but reciprocate.
We have reversed roles here, people. Which truly surprised me. And then I was shocked when I learned how old the characters were.
But after reading some reviews and quotes from the book, I thought: The hell, I've got to read it.
And I did read it. And finished it. In a blink.Still hung up on that.
I really liked the way the book was written. It's amazing when you get to know both points of view from the main characters, especially those of the male, since usually it's the female heroine who displays her thoughts out there.
I didn't really know what yo expect from this book. I mean, I wasn't comfortable with the idea of a student/teacher relationship since the begging but as the story progressed I realized that this wasn't just a forbidden romance between a teacher and student. In fact there aren't many scenes as I would like when you see the main characters interact but the actual ones... wow.... you just feel the urge of having a cold shower after you read them.
The story progresses to reveal the dark past of Dante that still haunts him, Clara's unresolved issues with her father and then how both of them find themselves leaning on each other and struggling to not fall into temptation. At least on Clara's part because Dante surely enjoyed pushing her limits. That little devil.
However under this charming and arrogant mask of his, you have a boy who has suffered an insufferable pain, that has struggled to make it through life and to hold on what's dear to him.
And the feelings that start to stir in him are so much more than just the likes of a good-looking teacher. Hopefully we will get to see more of it in the second book, Shattered Poetry. Another catchy title. You sure know your way with words, Mrs. Hansen. I got to give that to you.
But of course. Because we wouldn't be swooning all over the book.
And Clara's character. Where do I begin with. At first, I thought that she would be the bashful type of teacher. I don't really know why I got this feeling. How wrong I was. She was quite authoritative. She had a strong character and showed admirable qualities throughout the book.
She was head-strong, loyal and unassuming. She really struggled to keep herself from falling into the temptation that was sitting in the back row in her class and that constantly followed her. On one side I was like:"So it's wrong to get involved with a student, so don't fall for it" and then I was like "Screw that. Just do it Already". I struggled too here. It was mentally exhausting.
I was really horrified when I came across some other books with the same theme (female teacher/male student relationship) just to find out that the character of the teacher actually preyed on the innocent student. Truly horrified.
No offense to these writers and their readers. Just not my cup of tea.
And then her interaction with Dante. Oh God, don't let me even start. Apart from the really mind-driving stuff, there were are also other insightful moments that made you smile and think:"How sweet."
And then end. You just killed me there. I so did not see it coming. Which is actually good. I don;t really like when authors leave a lot of hints throughout the story for you to easily predict its ending.
But seriously, you killed me. Literally. I found myself re-reading for time trying to grasp it.

I also enjoyed the fine humor of the characters. It came of as good-naturally.

So all in all, I am hanging in here, waiting for the release of the new book. Impatiently if I might add. Very impatiently. I am going to burn that "buy" button when it comes out, you know.

Thank you Marita Hansen for sharing this amazing work of yours with us.

5.0 su 5 stelle 5 stars! Broken English, book 1 (3). Dante’s reckless & forbidden seduction of his English teacher, who is married! 15 settembre 2016

“Then stop eyeballing me like you wanna ride my c***,” I said. “You were doin’ it all through English class.”
“I was not!”
“Liar. You even did it during detention.”

Books in Broken Lives series should be read in order:
Book 1: Broken English
Book 2: Shattered Poetry
Book 3: Untitled

The Broken Lives series follows student, drug dealer and poet, Dante Rata from the age of fifteen into adulthood as he grows up coping with family, life, school, drugs, music, girls, women, sex and more sex.

Dante is a product of his environment; born and raised into violence, drugs, gangs and crime in the streets of South Auckland. But underneath the rough exterior is a complex and reflective young man marred by the devastation of murder, helplessness of drug addiction and unspeakable secrets.

Broken English (book 1) opens up to Dante meeting his new English teacher, Clara Hatton, Mrs. Hatton. They are off to a rocky start dealing with schoolwork, drama and boundaries.

Being a horny teenager, Dante takes advantage of his good looks by setting out to seduce his new teacher. Their forbidden attraction is palpable, fueling cocky behavior by Dante, while Clara struggles to cope with her guilt. It’s dangerous, reckless and so forbidden…

DANTE RATA: 15 years/Multi-racial (Maori & Croatian)/Student/Drug dealer/Black hair/Black-brown eyes/Tattoos.
There are no words that can fairly describe the complexity of Dante Rata. Be prepared to be swept off your feet by his uncanny beauty, c*cky, unpredictable, brave, devious, reckless, selfish and volatile behavior and let his vulnerabilities and flaws melt your heart.
“He remained where he was, looking unsure of what to do. His eyes were dark pools of emotion, giving me the impression he was holding back tears. It made my heart ache for him.”

CLARA HATTON, Mrs. Hatton: 24 years/Caucasian/English teacher/Blond (brown) hair/Gray eyes/Married.
Clara Hatton, Mrs. Hatton did not stand a chance against the force that is Dante (and neither did I). Six words to describe Clara: Caring, reflective, naïve, immature, misguided and meek.
“You’re not to say or do anything s*xual. You will also not swear or be rude to me.”
“I often blurt things out before I think. It’s not always intentional.”

Broken English, told from dual POVs, is forbidden romance at its best. Story is driven my Dante and I might have wished myself Clara once or twice while reading. It ends with a shocker leading right to book 2, Shattered Poetry for the continuation of their story.

Addicting! Forbidden! Reckless! Sinfully good! I feel like re-reading it right now!
“Pushing up onto my elbows, I stared at her from under the fringe of my messy hair. “I wanted to lie down where you f*****,” I said, interested in seeing her reaction.
“You’re unbelievable,” she gasped.”

Every now and then a novel comes along that really takes me by surprise. Broken English by Marita A. Hansen is one of them. I think I went into this story thinking it would be a twisted tale about forbidden sex, an older married woman finding herself attracted to a younger teenage boy. Clara had her demons to fight, no doubt about it, but I’m wondering how any of us women would have fared against a street-smart kid like Dante Rata. I alternated between feeling sorry for the young man, (wanting to take him home so I could take care of him) to wishing I could stick a bar of soap in his potty mouth. But then I also wished he’d been a little older so I could justify in my head how Clara felt, because I understood it.

Dante is fifteen going on thirty. He’s had a hard life, his good looks not doing him any favors. He is used and abused, mostly by women, and craving someone to treat him like a real person and not just a play-toy. Not that he doesn’t enjoy the ladies. He’s got a tough outer shell, built up over years of abuse, and it’s difficult for him to let anyone get close. Claire starts out wanting to help him, but he’s not like any other student she’s ever dealt with. A little out of her league.

It’s difficult to say too much else without giving everything away and I don’t want to ruin the story for you. Don’t go into this thinking it’s only about sex. There is way more involved that you’d have to read to understand. I don’t give out five stars easily, but this one definitely deserves it. Give it a read. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

This is the 8th bok I've red by Marita A. Hansen. I'm a big fan of the Behind the lives-series so I had to read this because of Dante and his story.

This is a taboo-story with a young student and his young and attractive teacher. With Hansens books though, you know it will be a lot more going on. The characters are well rounded and believable. I especially like the way we get two points of views with different language and thoughts. It really emphasizes the point that these people come from two different worlds.

As always it's well written and makes you wanna read the whole book in one go, but at the same time you don't want it to end.

This is so far removed from my world in Norway so I can't really say anything in regards to authenticity, but for me it feels like I am on the tough streets of NZ reading this book. Now I have to go back and read the Behind the lives-series all over again, waiting for the second book to come out.
