5.0 su 5 stelle May have been the most "risque" (her words!) musical Mom ever saw! 17 gennaio 2014
Di Grandma Zizzy - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Audio CD Acquisto verificato
Cabaret came out in 1972, after Mom had just given birth to her 7th child (of ten!). I was the oldest, and can recall Mom describing the movie afterward to a friend as "a little risque"... funny the things we remember! It probably did seem that way to my mother, a full-time homemaker who led a very simple (very UN-night-clubbish) life (and did one heckuva job raising us all!), but I'm sure all of the awards it received were too enticing --- EIGHT Oscars, including Best Actress for Liza Minelli and Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey. (Sort of hard to believe it didn't also win Best Picture given all of the other awards --- then again, it's the year "The Godfather" won... pretty stiff competition!) It's set in 1931 Berlin, surrounded by the growing presence of the Nazi party, and also starred Michael York.

Even though I didn't actually see many old musicals until I became an adult and developed an appreciation for them, it felt like I'd already learned all of their songs since Mom seemed to find reasons to continuously be singing or humming around the house (hard to believe, with how full her plate was!) She's always been a happy, easy-to-please kind of person, so you'd think finding gifts for her would be equally easy... NOT! I did come up with a pretty good idea a couple of years ago for her birthday, though - recalling her particular love of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, I put a collection together for her that she thoroughly enjoyed. Then I decided to pursue her love of old movie musicals even further. Typed a Google search for "Top 25 Film Musicals", and the first thing that popped up was just such a list that the American Film Institute came up with in 2006! I'd already given her two of them (Rodgers & Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music" and "The King and I"), so over the course of a year, I was able to track the rest all down (finding the best price on Amazon for about half of them) for a total of about $350, which gave me a supply of gifts that covered Mother's Day, another birthday and two Christmases! It was SO nice to have a year in which I didn't have to rack my brain for gift ideas, but - even BETTER! - to see Mom's reaction as she opened each new "treasure", all of which represented memories to her as well. Cabaret was #5 on the list, which covers the '30s through the '00s, so it was fun for her to recall "where her life was at" when each of the musicals came out.
5.0 su 5 stelle A classic CD from a classic singer. 2 novembre 2010
Di Doc's Son - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Audio CD Acquisto verificato
Obviously this soundtrack has been around for quite some time, but the timelessness of the work is evident from the first track. This soundtrack is more than the music to a movie: it represents a musical window to the beginning of a dark time in world history. Listen to "Tomorrow belongs to me," and picture the young German Nazis as they sing the lyrics. Their arrogance, set in the excesses of German society at that time, explains to some degree how a nation could go so seriously wrong in the late 1930's and early 1940's. Joel Gray and Liza Minelli were supberb vocalists and the score itself brillant. A must addition to any serious student of music.
5.0 su 5 stelle A Must Have! 4 aprile 2013

If you are a fan of the movie, you will Love this sountrack. Songs that actually move the plot forward. But even if you are not a movie buff, just a lover of great music you will love these poignant, imaginative, catchy tunes. " what good is sitting all alone in your room, come hear the music play, life is a Cabaret" a riveting portrait of a tumultuous time in History!

5.0 su 5 stelle As relevant now as it was when it came out. 20 agosto 2002
Di Cathleen M. Walker - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

Not only is this the soundtrack for the most incredible performance to grace the stage, its politics are mesmerizing! After watching the DVD, the music haunted my mind for days until I just *had* to have the soundtrack. That alone says something for the power of this piece of theater. Liza Minelli is at her best; manipulative, cunning, canaiving, vulnerable and incredibly sweet in turns. Joel Gray is amazingly, insanely upbeat. But the most intriguing story in this entire piece is in the background -- as the Nazis subtly pervade society until they have more power than anyone ever suspected -- because people were so self-absorbed they weren't even paying attention.
As relevant now as when it came out. If you've never seen it before, see it now.
