But their stolen moments and budding passions end abruptly when his audience with the Duke concludes badly. As he departs Rouen, little does he realize that the beautiful Ailénor lies hidden aboard, just beneath his feet.

Now only he can save her from family enemies returned from long past, seeking revenge . . .

Yet amid the darkest danger, their all-consuming love is forged . . .

3.0 su 5 stelle Not as good as the other 2 but not bad 13 settembre 2013

I think that although the other reviewers haven't gone into too much detail, they have summed up my issues with this book. Whereas the first 2 books were honourable and beautiful this book lacked something. The H and h encountered one another fairly early on and were both moved by each other but unfortunately the H had to respond to the politics of the day and had to return to his Lord in England. The h on the other hand is mistaken for her mother(the h of the second book) and kidnapped back to Ireland. The H discovers her pretty quickly on the same ship as he left France on and they band together to try and overcome the baddies.

Sadly the H takes the h's innocence fairly early on and I just didn't feel the same sense of honour that permeated through the first 2 books. Of course the H comes through for the h in the end but it isn't quite the same.

If you've read the first two books, you'll want to read this one as it occurs 20 years after the second book. However be warned that it isn't the same calibre as the first two.

I have never read any of the other Heart series novels by Anita Gordon and I wish I had because previous characters play an integral part of this book. This made the story unclear until the final chapters when the all the conflicts between characters from the previous works are resolved.

Lady Ailenor is a beautiful maiden living in Normandy. She meets Englishman Gareth while trying to rescue a kitten and they strike up an immediate friendship.

Gareth is in Rouen on the king's business, this is pre William the Conqueror. He is there to only do a little fact finding about the state of political affairs. The rightful King of France is back in England while the Duke of Normandy rules the land.

Ailenor is unaware of all this political intrigue. She just admires and wants to be with Gareth and she gets her wish. She is abducted by men on orders from a vicious Irish woman named Rhiannon. Gareth is on the same boat as Ailenor just by coincidence and he rescues her and takes her overland to Winchester, believing she will be safe there from the men trying to kidnap her.

These two henchmen of Rhiannon are hot on the trail but they actually have the wrong woman in their sights. Rhiannon is searching for Ailenor's mother. Both ladies have red hair and slim builds.

At Winchester, Ailenor becomes involved in political machinations of an exiled French Queen, kingly ministers and the King's cousins. Ailenor desperately wants to go back and warn her mother of Rhiannon but now she is a virtual prisoner in Winchester. The King has ordered her to stay in England which suits the purposes of the exiled Queen quite nicely, hence the title Captive Heart. Ailenor is furious about this and she turns her wrath on Gareth because of his loyalty to the king. Ailenor readily believes every negative connotation about Gareth, no matter the source. I kept wondering why she never trusted the man who risked his life for her several times.

This novel is well written and surprisingly it was easy to follow all the characters hidden agendas and political maneuvering. Even the wicked Rhiannon was well written and the reader can feel her pain and intense anger. It took a long time though to truly discover why she despised Ailenor's mother so very much.

The story line between the lovers seemed to drag and that was because they spend some time apart and Ailenor had problems trusting Gareth, a man she professed to love. Ailenor also lacks some common sense; she rushes off in a foolish plan not taking into account the consequences of her actions on others. The final showdown with Rhiannon was well done and the epilogue almost unneeded.

I have read the first two books to this series and I have enjoyed all Three!! I guess that you could read this as a stand alone story but, I would suggest not. To get the full measure of the "whole" story, you at least need to read the second book, Defiant Heart. There was so much to this story; it had me captivated from the beginning until the very end. If you like the dark age era and a good romance with true love, then this story is a good one to add to your library.

It's 933 A.D., the beautiful Ailenor and the handsome Garreth fall in love. But true love is tested by being the focus of a monologuing villainess, being abducted by ugly henchmen, being shipwrecked, being political pawns, being chased on a horse, being imprisoned and being held over a cliff. Despite the plot cliches, the novel is fast-paced and interesting. The novel skillfully blends the interaction of historical and fictional characters. There are no major battles fought in the novel but the author gives a brief insight on the political intrigues and alliances of that period.

I just finished reading the last book of the series and it was a wonderful story. I enjoyed reading this book because of the way the author writes makes you feel like you are standing watching everything that is happening. I hope she will start writing about the other characters in the book. I you will enjoy reading this story as much as I have.
