Each person in a family will need to decide for him or herself what role they will play in this process of helping the dying person. If you decide rightly for yourself, you will be able to look back on the days, months, or years of caregiving--no matter how challenging--and to be able to know in your heart that you did what was right for you in service of your loved one."

Author Joanna Lillian Brown marshaled her own experiences to create this caring resource.

Caring for Dying Loved Ones: A Helpful Guide for Families and Friends is a useful guide book for persons already caring for chronically ill or dying relatives or friends as well as those who wish to prepare for care giving responsibilities in the future. The first chapter of the book, “Taking Your Own Temperature as a Caregiver” sets the tone for this practical and inspirational guide. Some other chapters in the book include “Financial Considerations,” “Family Dynamics and Conflicts,” and “The Final Days, Hours, and Minutes. ”Helpful check lists, forms, and resource lists are interspersed with compelling personal stories from more than a decade of caring for dying relatives and friends. The final chapter on activism calls for a national dialogue about end of life care and proposes new options for providing and financing at-home care that are worthy of consideration.

Written by a person who has shown great compassion to several friends and family members at the end of life, this book contains all the information she wishes she had from the beginning. The author empasizes the many decisions that must be made along the way and urges caregivers to make plans well ahead of time. In particular, she makes a plea that caregivers seek a firm understanding of the wishes of the ill person with respect to their care while they live, and of treatment of their body after death, preferably obtained while they are still in a condition to think and express themselves clearly.

This is a book to buy before your even think you will need it, because someday you will. JHJ

The author, Joanna Lillian Brown who has personally cared for numerous family members and friends, has written a remarkable book. She has engaged in an amazing ministry for loved ones in her life and has written comprehensively about the process. This is a book to read now if there are loved ones in your life, particularly those who are older and may need care in their last months or years. She addresses the role and needs of the caregiver as well as those for whom care is being provided. It is not just for times of crisis or dying for also for preparation. It will make you think about your own wishes for the end of life. The book is short, easy to read, and filled with resources and stories. An interfaith or ecumenical resource, it can be used as a reference or just a good read at the time you need it. I would recommend adding this to your house of worship or program library as well as for family use. It is sensitively written because it comes from direct personal experience and learning about the process of caregiving. Bless Joanna for creating this work of love to share.

Please feel free to recommend the book to those you know who are actively caregiving. Even after many years of caregiving for my parents, there are insights here and resources that are new to me.

As adults, we often think we know our life well. But how often do we turn our eyes away from touchy issues such as caring for dying loved ones? Such as how we will face the last stage of our own life? Caring for Dying Loved Ones: A Helpful Guide for Families and Friends is such an eye-opening book to me and my friends. It inspires a lot of great conversations among my friends and family.

Today with much more improved economic and medical conditions, we still lack a mind set to take good enough care of our senior loved ones either physically or spiritually. I am so glad that I read this book now so that I start thinking about this now instead of panicking decades later when my own parents may need intense care.

This book also makes me think a lot about the last stage of my own life. It seems a long time away from now (hopefully). That's often why we avoid thinking about it. But if we want better social support for our own senior life, it's not too early to act now, and helping our dying loved ones is also helping ourselves.

I highly recommend this book to everybody. People have different religions, hobbies and priorities in their current life. But we all have the commonness of having to face the last stage of our life someday, and before that, most of us will have to face the death of our loved ones. I've found this book extremely helpful. It fills a blank on a topic that's so important to all of us yet we've given it so little thought.

Caring for dying loved ones is something that most family members experience. Having lost my parents and eldest sister, I so often nodded my head while reading this book. I shed tears, too, remembering the struggles and confusion in the midst of dealing with heavy loss. Anyone who is involved in a relationship or has aging parents or siblings will benefit greatly by reading this book and keeping it close by as a resource through all the days and nights of providing loving care.
