5.0 su 5 stelle Campfire-style storytelling at its finest. 29 maggio 2014
Di Donald C. Weiss, Jr. - Pubblicato su
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
A group of teenagers eager for a night of fun and games attend a carnival. From the wild rides to the grotesque freak show and bizarre performers, the place would seem to be just the thrill they were looking for. But when members of the clique start dying gruesome deaths, the only thing they become eager for is escaping with their lives.

THE CARNIVAL 13 has the flavor of a scary campfire tale. With each chapter the baton is passed from writer to writer, and each delivers on the promise of fear and terror in their own fashion. Elements of psychological, slasher, and traditional horror conventions permeate the storyline and meld surprisingly well. The carnival is a very confining and atmospheric setting, adding to the mounting tension and building up to each character meeting their final fate.

The teenagers themselves are a varied but fairly generic assortment of stereotypes: there’s a jock, a geek, a beauty queen, etc. The best is easily the main one, Brian, and it’s his struggle against the forces at work within the carnival that truly fuel the book. His perceptions of his friends become increasingly distorted, like viewing them in the funhouse mirror, and the writers clearly enjoy probing the depths of his sanity and seeing just how far they can take him.

A creepy collaboration that takes a chance with a rare form of storytelling, THE CARNIVAL 13 pays off with enormous success. The styles are diverse, the narrative flow is consistent, and it delivers on the promise of taking the readers on a wild ride unlike any they’ve ever been on before.

Wonderful collection--and I love the concept of different authors taking turns writing the story. The story flowed very well in spite of the different authors. Very enjoyable and scary!
3.0 su 5 stelle Not a great novel, but some creepy scenarios nicely depicted 27 febbraio 2015

This is an interesting experiment in story-telling. 13 authors -- each continuing the story with their own chapter. Nothing wrong with it as an exercise, but as a novel, it's really not great. It is best to view it as a campfire tale (as another reviewer called it), with the authors taking turns trying to spook the campfire audience, a roaring fire in the middle of the circle. Don't expect any character development. Don't expect any particular deep meaning. Don't expect any great dialog. Don't expect any meaningful plot or any normal "reasoning" on the part of the characters. [Nobody is saying, "Hey let's shut this carnival down! There are murders going on all over the place. Let's get out of here! Why aren't the cops here?"] So, this is a much simpler tale that asks the reader to suspend belief in the "normal" world that we live in. It doesn't really make any sense that these kids would behave like they do in this novel. But, if they didn't, we wouldn't have a book.

You will find quite a few scenes of grotesque horror described. That's what you are reading this for -- not for great literature or plot or character. But, it does all take place in a creepy old-timey carnival, and includes a freak show. I love the creep factor inherent in carnival-themed horror stories. If you are a sucker for carny/ freak show stories and films, this novel has all that at its core. The fact that 13 authors collaborated sequentially probably makes it impossible to be a great novel. But, it has some great scenarios depicted.

The book itself is published by a private publisher, it seems. It is a nicely printed book with a decent cover. Only 3 typos that I came across (pages 103, 119, 136). That's pretty good for these privately printed books.

5.0 su 5 stelle There is no hell, only carnival 24 febbraio 2014
Di David Watson - Pubblicato su
Formato: Formato Kindle
“There is no hell, only Carnival.” This is one of the quotes in the book Carnival 13 and it’s a good description of what you can expect from this book. What could be more fun then going to a carnival? Brian doesn’t think its fun but his girlfriend Polly does. Brian is not happy and he gets even unhappier when they meet up with a group of friends at the Carnival and decide to explore together.

They soon find out that this is no ordinary carnival. Brian finds himself getting violently ill in a freak show and he doesn’t remember certain things. It gets worse when he imagines pushing one of his friends off a building and then sees a sadistic clown do the deed. The group starts dying one by one, they can’t escape the carnival and the freak show wants to keep Brian permanently as a serial killer clown.

Carnival 13 is a different kind of book, its a novel written by 13 horror authors with each one wrote one chapter and their goal is to shock you. Think of it like a group of horror authors sitting in a circle, one starts the story and then the next one continues it trying to be scarier then the previous author. Carnival 13 is a fun experiment in writing with all profits from the book going to Scares That Care.

I was excited when I heard about Carnival 13 because I love books about sideshows and carnivals and I like a lot of the authors involved in the project such as Julianne Snow, Armand Rosamilla, John Everson and Anne Michaud. All the authors in this book manage to deliver some scary moments using a classic horror setting of a traveling carnival. This book has a set of conjoined twins that are a little crazy, a perverted midget, a bearded lady, the fattest man on earth, killer clowns and deformed babies that are just as vicious as they look.

Carnival 13 is a fun creepy roller coaster and I found myself thinking that it would make a great cheesy horror film. Because you have 13 authors telling the story, I found it got a little confusing at times. There were things that didn’t get explained well and some of the characters were underdeveloped. If one author was writing the book it would have bothered me but I think the main point in this book was to scare you and try something that hasn’t been done before. Make no mistake about it, Carnival 13 delivers some great scary moments.

My favorite parts of this book were the scenes in the freak show when Polly and Brian see a mermaid and other oddities. I also liked in the beginning where a man is making fun of the freaks in the carnival and a clown comes up behind him and makes him sorry. I also liked how Brian debated on whether to listen to the clown that controls him or help his friends escape the carnival.

The absolute best part of the book was Terrence and Agnes trying to survive after a test of strength. The two are given a little backstory that makes you care about them and then they have to escape from some pretty frightening creatures. The Fattest Man On Earth will really make you cringe. If you don’t buy Carnival 13 for the horrifying moments get it because it’s a good experiment in fiction writing or because the profits go to a good cause.
