The battle at Pittsburg Landing altered the course of the war in the west and changed the lives of thousands who fought there and survived.

Will Hunter's pursuit of higher command has been interrupted by his capture, the fault of his jealous commanding officer. Stuck far behind enemy lines with little hope for exchange, escape seems improbable. Neither high prison walls nor hundreds of miles of Ohio backwoods trails will keep him from trying.

Philip Pearson survived Shiloh but wonders if his luck will hold much longer. Pursuing reinstatement in the Methodist Episcopal Church brings him full circle: his battlefield experience calling him back to the collar he left behind. Only convincing the bishop of Dayton and surviving the coming assaults on Corinth stand in his way of a chaplaincy.

Ohio, far from the theaters of war, will test both men's ambitions and trust in their fellow man.

4.0 su 5 stelle Good Civil War stuff! 1 marzo 2013
Di Cynthia - Pubblicato su

After having read (& really enjoyed) "They Met At Shiloh" by Phillip Bryant... I received an ARC of Bryant's new book "A Certain Death". This is the 2nd in this Civil War series. I had just visited the Shiloh Battlefield prior to reading the 1st book in the series, & oddly enough, this year I visited the Civil War prison camp Andersonville prior to reading "A Certain Death" which a prison camp is one of the settings in the book!
I really enjoyed this book also & felt that I could really relate to all of the descriptions of the scenes, having felt like I'd just been to such a place. I thought the author did a good job of describing & remaining 'true' to the period/era. I was somewhat surprised that this was part of a series, but it was a pleasant surprise...& I will look forward to the next installment!

5.0 su 5 stelle "A Certain Death" Review 15 marzo 2013
Di Robert Webb - Pubblicato su

I have finished the book and found it a great read. One line of the plot follows the experience of the Confederate prisoner of war and many times you hold your breath as escapes are planned and made, prisoners are recaptured, and you witness the interaction between the Confederates themselves, and the interaction with their captors.

Another line gives you a good look into the culture that existed in Ohio at the time as well as one of the predominant religions in the area.

The two lines of the plot converge and here you see examples of humanity, cruelty, heroism, and betrayal exhibited by members of both the Confederate and union armies.

The ending leaves you in expectaion of what is to follow in the next installment.

3.0 su 5 stelle Certain Death not like Shiloh 14 aprile 2014

They Met at Shiloh was a really good story with a in creatable amount of research behind it. I got to know the characters even though there were many.

However, number two of the Shiloh series failed to hold my interest. Indeed it is about a small number of people. I couldn't relate very well to the characters. The writing is good as Bryant is certainly a good writer, better than many I have read.

This book was not nearly as good as the first book! At first the book threw me off since a god portion of it takes place before the first book. It is like the author decided to go back and flesh out the characters from the first book and add a new character that would appear in the third book. Had to struggle through parts of this book that were just plain boring. The good parts of the book were good but the conflicted personality of one of the main characters kind of put me off. Am currently reading the third book, hope it is better.

3.0 su 5 stelle Not as good as the first book. 18 agosto 2014

This second book in the series was a dissapointment to me. I didn't like the turn the story took and it suffered from having so little action. While I know there were escapes from the POW camps in the north, the escape described here didn't sit well with me. Hopefully, the third book will be better.
