I recently read The Perfect Game by J. Sterling and I liked it a lot. It had some issues with the plot that made me give it only 3 stars, but overall I enjoyed the characters and the writing.

Not as much with Chance Encounters. I thought the first meeting between Jackson and Caroline was awkward and unrealistic. I didn't buy the progression of their relationship at all.

It's also difficult to become attached to a character as unlikable as Caroline. She is constantly talking to Jackson, mooning over his gifts, swooning over his letters, but she is in a steady and committed relationship with another man that she claims to love. I have a really hard time identifying with someone who cheats for an extended period of time. No, Caroline did not have sex with Jackson, but she had a relationship with him and she continued that relationship for over half a year (until Jackson broke it off after he found out Caroline got engaged to her boyfriend).

We don't get to spend much time with Jackson or really get to know him at all, but he was pretty bland. He was too perfect. I can't even think of one flaw the guy had.

I think the author wrote this before The Perfect Game and her writing has definitely improved. I'll probably check out future books by her, but this one just wasn't great.

Super sigh of sweet satisfaction!

Remember this song, by Bryan Adams?
"When you love someone, you'll sacrifice
You'll give everything you got, and you won't think twice
You'll risk it all, no matter what may come
When you love someone.
You'll shoot the moon, put out the sun
When you love someone"

Those words sound so vanilla, just sitting there on the page, but with the smoky, smouldering intensity of Bryan Adams' voice and the moody dreamlike flute and piano accompaniment, they convey a powerful sense of an almost desperate yearning to be with the object of your desire. So, it's kind of awkward, to say the least, when that kind of powerful emotion hits you when you've already committed to be with someone else. And that's what happens to MC Caroline as our story opens. She's in a lovely, settled relationship with her lawyer boyfriend Clay when she gets word of the death of a friend. On her return from the funeral, she's seated, by chance, next to Jackson Parks. Maybe we should move the "s" to the front of his last name, because whoa! crazy sparks fly, and they set Caroline and Jackson's lives on fire. Like Bryan's song suggests, a love so intense and consuming has risks, and requires everything you've got. But can careful Care, the sensible girl with a plan, take a chance based on just that kind of random encounter? Especially when it's more than just her own heart at stake.

This is an emotional rollercoaster of a ride. It's not enough that Caroline and Jackson have to contend with their overwhelming mutual attraction (hey, it could be worse, I guess, if it were one sided) while stuck at absolute opposite ends of the U.S., the disapproval of their well-meaning friends, and other peoples' claims to their hearts. Events won't stand still either, and require a leap of faith that might well end in disaster for one or both of them.

Personally I couldn't help but fall in love with Caroline. I know that cheating is kind of a gray area at best in romance novels, and it's not clear if what Caroline does would be considered that (this is kind of a chaste romance, btw, by today's standards, although emotionally flagrant). But she's so torn between what's expected of her and what her heart can't resist that her struggles will def tug at your heartstrings. She doesn't want to be the kind of person she'd hate, who can argue with that? Fortunately she has an awesome lifeline friend, Bailey, to provide perspective, help the plot along and just generally be funny and charming. There really aren't any good guys or bad guys (although some of them pull some extremely maddening stunts), just a crew of realistically drawn characters with the flaws, foibles and occasional strengths that real folk would display.

This is a charming, poignant, tender and exhilarating read. I love the way the author conveys that giddy sense of besotted, bewilderingly beautiful emotional attraction that is one of life's greatest gifts. Don't hesitate to give that gift to yourself, by reading this sweet and affecting novel asap

I have to first say Congrats to J. Sterling!!!! I can see where she has grown confidence in her writing and am proud to say that Chance Encounters was a wonderful read. I fell in love with the Characters... Jackson especially, I felt the love, the heart break, and most especially the deep connection between all of them.

I also have to give J. big props for not having Caroline physically cheat... granted she fell in love with another man while in a relationship BUT she was respectful of that relationship to avoid doing what her and Jackson both desperately wanted to do. I did at times get frustrated with Caroline because I knew who I she should be with but at the same time I understood her reason to hesitate.

This was an amazing book and now has me even more enthused for more of J. Sterling's work!!!

Chance Encounters- Coincidental meetings that could inevitably change your life. I definitely believe in these. Just as I believe everything happens for a reason and everyone you come into contact with in your life has a purpose.

Caroline Weber has a normal, good life. She meets Jackson Parks on a flight home from her college best friend's funeral. They have an immediate connection but Caroline has a life on the other side of the U.S. with her boyfriend, Clay. She and Jackson maintain a great friendship until one day it gets too complicated and they can't do it anymore. Caroline is faced with a tough decision on whether she should follow her heart and take a chance or leave it be.

The whole story was great and it was fun to be there throughout Caroline's confusion and stress because both guys are great guys and she doesn't want to hurt either. I think a lot of us have been in this predicament so we can definitely relate!

Another good book by J. Sterling!

That was a hot mess. A sometimes delicious hot mess, but a hot mess all the same.

This is the second book I have read by J. Sterling. Her writing style is simply unique. It is passionate and, at times, chaotic. When sucked into her books you never know quite where the tornado is going to put you down and I enjoy that.

What do you do if you find your soul mate while in a relationship with another person? That is what this book is about.

Caroline was an interesting character. I struggled to like her and, at times, I hated her. Her choices and the fall out from those choices were heart wrenching. With any cheating you know somebody is going to get hurt, but in this case there wasn't a physical relationship. It was all based on emotion.

I found the development of the relationship with Jackson to be lackluster. Soul mates and insta-love can work if the relationship is developed correctly. It just didn't work for me with this book. I felt like the characters met, had an instant connection, and then jumped into a long-distance emotional relationships of sorts. You don't see the love growing, just various snapshots of their lives and the chaotic mentality of Caroline. You get a bit of a glimpse into Jackson's head and honestly, I would have loved more from him. You also get a bit of a glimpse into Clay's head and again, I would have liked more from him.

Overall, this book is a decent read. Once I was able to put my own thoughts around what was transpiring on the back burner, the book did pull me in and I finished it pretty quickly. I recommend it, but with the understanding that you may have some pretty strong reactions to what the main character decides. I know I did.
