Jessica was born with traits she just could not hide – beauty, cunning, and innate skills to survive. She is blocked from taking her rightful position in the lucrative family business of high stakes horse racing by her farm’s manager and top trainer, Gus Adams. When Gus is found brutally murdered, all evidence points to Jessica. Terrified, she runs and becomes a master at hiding in plain view.
The process of building a new life around an assumed identity is derailed when she is recognized by the organization that destroyed her family. This time, instead of running away, she heads back to Boston, racing against time to find answers. Her search for the truth uncovers the cold reality that the Charity will stop at nothing to succeed in its mission.
Set in the rolling hills of Kentucky and the streets of Boston, "The Charity" exposes that Jessica is not the only one hidden in the daylight.
What reviewers say:
"The Charity" brings the reader on a journey from innocence to guilt on the coercive power of a terrorist's heart. Introducing the reader first into the hatred and evil of a clandestine cell, the author masterfully manipulates their sympathies to bring them closer to understanding the reasons behind the terror. The history and the people of the Irish Republican Army are used to weave a story that is as compelling as it is timely. "The Charity" will keep the reader glued to their seat until the last page is turned.
A legal thriller and suspense novel, "The Charity" will delivers an incredibly suspense reading experience.

Now forced to run for her life, Jessica becomes an expert chameleon, learning how to adapt and stay ahead of the invisible forces hunting her down. She draws on an admirable well of intelligence, fortitude, and survival instinct - along with some dumb luck - to stay alive. Yet, all the while, she longs for a chance to find a place to belong. She misses the sense of community and family she's lost. Misses it so much in fact, that after a few years, she decides to stop running and plant down roots. Surely it's been long enough?
Unfortunately, the world of horses is a small one and it doesn't take much for everything to begin to unravel. What ensues is a harried rush to remember the past and hunt down the real killers. Can she mine her memories and solve the mystery in time?
The Charity is a riveting tale that masterfully weaves seemingly disparate worlds. New England charm, Kentucky horses, and Irish terrorists create a fine tapestry in Connie Johnson Hambley's able hands. The reader is left with unanswered questions at the end, wondering where Jessica's journey will take her. Luckily, the second book of the series "The Troubles" has just been released. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next!

Jessica Wyeth, the protagonist, makes her first appearance in Chapter 1 and I immediately liked the young woman. As I followed her trials through the story, I couldn’t help but root for her to win. Connie Hambley has drawn her characters very lifelike; even the villains. The back stories are dripped into the chapters, rather than being dumped on the reader. The action carries the story, but the plot is tightly drawn.
Being a feminist, the only thing I wished was that the ending had been just a little different; a little less typical. The rest of the story is far from typical and this is a book I recommend. A solid four star

BUT... I was blown away by how good this book is, from the storyline to the pacing to the writing to the character development. I hadn't felt so engrossed in a thriller since I read the "Girl with Dragon Tattoo" series two years ago. And there are similarities: a young woman hero (although a Boston blue blood instead of a young punker), a dark wintery setting (Boston and the Kentucky mountains instead of Stockholm and Swedish islands) and a male establishment helper (a Boston DA instead of a Stockholm journalist).
The book did what the best books do: it took me on a journey into several worlds I know little about (Boston IRA terrorists, horse breeding/racing, Kentucky small-town living) and left me feeling like I had been in the middle of those worlds.
I found myself both rooting for and identifying with the main character (even though the main character is a woman and a horse person, and I am neither of those). I also found myself hating the bad guys, rooting for some other good guys, and kept having to remind myself that these were just fictional characters, not real people. There are a few times where a character seems too stereotypical or cartoonish, but those are few and far between, and to be expected from a first-time author. Overall the characters are real. Sometimes really good, sometimes really bad, sometimes really complicated, sometimes really surprising, sometimes really aggravating, but always real.
The story and the mystery is so good, I kept finding that I had to hold myself back from skimming pages or skipping ahead to find out what happens next. There are twists and turns aplenty, and of course a few "coincidences" that are almost too unbelievable, but that's what makes a great thriller. Real life this ain't.
And perhaps the best part is that things happen I didn't want to happen. Good characters died I didn't want to die. Bad guys got away with things I didn't want them to get away with. Justice wasn't always served. It is a compliment to the writer's courage to not take the easy way out with the storyline. Even the ending wasn't what I wanted. I was mad at the choices made by the main character, but then I guess that makes it a really good ending, since it aroused my emotions.
The plot twists and turns and characters seem taylor-made for a hollywood movie. I kept thinking of Harrison Ford in "Patriot Games," although in this book the hero is a young woman, not an older ex-CIA agent. In any event, I look forward to the next book. I hope there is a sequel!
