Firstly a warning :- This is Christian fiction and there is a strong Christian theme throughout this novella. Although as it is a book for Christmas I think that most of us can overlook that.

It is late December in Christmas Valley, a small town that has to actively promote Christmas to gain tourists and business. The local pastor and his wife also run a guest house in town, and with the fact that none of their children will be able to make it home for the festive season it is decided to keep the guest house open for the Christmas period. As the guests arrive the couple are in for a bit of a shock. First there is the cantankerous old woman Myrtle, an surly old man, an arguing couple and a single mother with her daughter.

Coming into town is also Colin and Amy, in a ragtag converted old school bus. With Amy pregnant, and the bus in need of some work they are stuck there as the snows come in.

Literally this is a retelling of the Nativity, brought up to date and with some gentle humour. Although a definite Christian fiction tale this is really perfectly alright for most of us to read, considering the time of year, and that we are supposed to remember that most important thing - goodwill to all men.

Ok, I suppose I'm giving my age away with the title, but it was quite apt. This was a slightly feel-goodish, only very slightly preachy, very slightly corny kind of tale, that we tend to be ok with at this time of year - because it's Xmas, and we're getting into the spirit and are willing to make allowances...

It's a read that has 'the morale of the tale' kind of situations, that teaches you that there is more than meets the eye and that's it's best not to judge, lest you be judged. But saying that, it's low-grade sweet (i.e. not sickly sweet), low-grade Christian, with a character that was just short of being goody-goody, one who was initially a mean, interfering, cantankerous old bat...but who had hidden depths and maybe was more than she actually seemed, and others that learned to compromise and share in the spirit of Xmas. Add in a host of old biddies that squabbled and gently bitched, but who then got involved in their church, finding their Xmas spirit, a travelling couple about to have a baby whose bus just happens to break down in town, and who manage to get the last room in a B&B and this is a quaint little genteel Xmas tale. One I quite liked.

The font and formatting do make the tale seem longer than it is, but I read this in around 30 mins and felt quite zen afterwards.

If you want a nice, well told predictable story for Christmas set in small-town America and based on the nativity, then this is for you. Plenty of quite sharp characterisation, and you just know from very early on what is going to happen - even if one of the central figures, Myrtle, remains ambiguous to the end and even beyond it. Best read approaching Christmas with a glass of mulled wine (alcohol-free, of course!) and with a dusting of snow outside.

There are plenty of clues to the plot and characters in other reviews. Suffice it to say that this is an easy read with characters who are credible if perhaps on a fairly superficial level. That, however, doesn't matter if what you are expecting is a story that is light in tone working towards a fairly predictable ending. If you're in the right mood, as I was when I read this - taking a break from Harlan Coban, John Grisham, David Baldacci et al - then you'll enjoy a satisfying and occasionally thought-provoking read.

This little book was a very enjoyable read. Charming in it's simplicity. The plot is very straightforward and the dialogue comfortably written. The Charcterisation is strong and would have benefited from being a longer story. Sometimes it is good just to sit down with a pleasant little read and this book fits that purpose extremely well. I will buy some other books by this author as I liked her writing style. i would liken the story style to an American version of Alexander McCall Smith with a clear Christian way of life at the heart of the story.
