4.0 su 5 stelle Great starting point... 7 luglio 2012

First, I should point out that I am a Marx Brothers fan, not a Marx Brothers fiend. What's the difference? I can't give you dates and times when they filmed their movies or TV shows. But I've read a couple of books about them--the autobiographies as well--and own their movies. So I got just what I was looking for when I purchased Simon Louvish's "Coffee With Groucho." I thought it was a great overview for those uninitiated with the Marxes, particularly Groucho, and I thought it was a fun read. It certainly had the flavor of Groucho if not the full version himself. I noticed in a couple of reviews for the book that people complained that some of the stories were told incorrectly and the facts were off, but this could be said about any Marx Brothers book. Of the three or four I've read, there are always conflicting accounts of an episode in their careers and what they said, and once again, this is just supposed to be coffee with Groucho, not a tutorial. The only explanation I could find for such terrible reviews was that Simon Louvish must be an awful driver and ran over these people's dogs. A rotten review was their only redress in this situation, so now they've gotten their revenge. Ultimately, I found it particularly edifying that Groucho was included in this series alongside such folks as Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and Buddha. And in such a fine hardback edition.

1.0 su 5 stelle Disappointing book 4 ottobre 2007
Di Tom Hamel - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina rigida Acquisto verificato
This book was disappointing for two reasons: First, it is tiresome and not funny. It takes some well-known Groucho quotes and weaves them into an imagined interview between the author and Groucho. The second reason for the disappointment is that the author, Simon Louvish, has written an excellent appreciation of the Marx Brothers called Monkey Business: The Lives and Legends of the Marx Brothers. I'd highly recommend the latter book and skip this one. Just my opinion, but people who try to write in Groucho's voice don't often do a good job of it.

5.0 su 5 stelle The Greatest Grab-Bag of Groucho! 11 agosto 2013
Di J.D. Guinness - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina rigida
Simon Louvish has accomplished something quite special: he has assembled a Groucho Marx book that is better than any written by Groucho himself. (And yes, I say this as a hardcore fan who's read them all).

In keeping with the style of the other "Coffee With..." books, this is a matter of collecting all the subject's best lines and stories and then weaving them artfully into an imaginary interview. It works exceptionally well with Groucho for two important reasons. One, Louvish can draw from a wealth of hilarious lines from over a dozen Marx Brothers movies (none of them written by Groucho, by the way). And two, Groucho was at his best in conversational settings anyway, whether on his own You Bet Your Life radio and TV shows, or as a guest on The Dick Cavett Show.

I think I can safely say all Groucho fans wish we could have had coffee with him, during which we would definitely want him to "tell the one about so-and-so" or "do the one about exploring Africa", so this book gives fans exactly what they want; true Best-of-Groucho.

Bracketed by succinct biographical info, this is all today's harried, short-for-time Groucho fan really needs: the single best Groucho Marx book yet. One to cherish.

Tell 'em J. D. Guinness sent you.

3.0 su 5 stelle For Hardcore Groucho Fans Only 9 luglio 2012
Di goldenrulecomics - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina rigida
This book imagines a question-and-answer session with the late comedian over dinner, with his responses mostly comments that have been reported before and facts are already known. Even most of the jokes have been told.

It's a fast and breezy book, which can be whipped through in one sitting. Even though there's not much new, fans of Groucho Marx will probably enjoy re-reading his jokes and tales. For those who are unfamiliar with Marx, there's a biography at the beginning of the book that details his life pretty well.

Because of the book's structure I'd hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who isn't already a Groucho Marx fan. For those of us who are, it's a pleasant enough way to spend an hour or so. And it's sure to send you to the Internet to look up clips of the Marx Brothers movies and You Bet Your Life, where you can see and hear the jokes told by the then-living Groucho!

4.0 su 5 stelle Fun, breezy biography 21 marzo 2008
Di Eric H. Roth - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina rigida
Do you have an hour to spend just reading for fun? Do you like the Marx brothers and prefer smiling to sighing? Are you ready to laugh out loud at classic quips?

If so, this breezy "Coffee with Groucho" should satisfy. As a casual movie fan, I recalled a few funny scenes and learned some backstage stories. I recognized several quotes, and they still made me smile. Part biography, part entertainment history, and part silly, this light book requires disrespect and a flippant attitude. I liked it. You probably will too.

This book, however, should not be mistaken for a scholarly analysis of the Marx brothers, vaudeville, politics in Hollywood, or any other such grand project. It's just a simple, fun book filled with clever non-sense.
