Powerful and horribly real!

Stanfield pens an intense true crime story in Cold Blooded. I haven't read work from this author before, and I really enjoyed it, more like enjoyed the way it was written, and presented, not what Rod Ferrell did. This book gives a lot of information about the crimes of a vampire cult leader (only 16 years old). Not only did he have his cult, but he was charged with murdering the parents of one of his members. As the police continued their investigation, it led them to other states. The crimes themselves are horrid, but the investigation continued, not just with police but journalists as well. Stanfield, the author of this book, is a veteran reporter, and covered it from the beginning. It's one of those true crime stories that make you cringe, and that deviance has no age limit. Cold Blooded is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author.

Stanfield Underperforms Work as a Journalist

Stanfield has collected his articles on this case over the years and paraphrased them into book formation. Reading certain chapters alongside his articles reveals that he has done a terrific job of what looks like copying pasting, and paraphrasing his own work over the years and is still doing his best to bleed this case dry with any opportunity to sensationalize these events for his personal gain.

On a side note, I still don't understand why "Zoey/Xoey/Heather" was never indicted when so many people heard her talking about having her parents killed. It helps to put into connect that not only was her grandfather a lawyer but also a lawyer for Billy Graham... I'm sure that kind of information would have been even more sensationalized and created havoc for his ministries. I am not beyond postulating that someone helped her out to help out themselves.

While the facts behind this crime are horrific the author is so clearly prejudiced against any sort of counter culture it makes the book infuriating. Far too much emphasis is given to the “vampire” aspect which truly has very little to do with the actual crime. The author seems to believe the crime was perpetrated solely due to the fact that the so-called “cult” members were vampire enthusiasts. It’s quite insulting for the author to allege that people with “dark” interests are inherently evil. He doesn’t even use the correct name for the role playing game. It’s Vampire: THE Masquerade not Vampire Masquerade. And the amount of references to these people being evil because they happened to read Anne Rice’s vampire novels is quite frankly disgusting. I have read each novel at least twice and I certainly am not an evil person because I enjoy them nor am I an evil person because I am fascinated by many things most would call “dark” or “morbid”. I’m quite offended by the author’s assumption that everyone who enjoys these things must have dark tendencies. Let’s stop blaming authors and musicians and games for the terrible crimes people commit. The blame lies solely with the individual who committed them. This could have been a very informative book were it not for the author being completely close minded.

This had me enthralled.The matter of fact nature of the writing increases the horror of the situation. I recommend this for fans of more play by play true crime.
