4.0 su 5 stelle Collecting Medieval Coins: A Beginners Guide 25 ottobre 2013

It is a beginners guide to be sure, but what a guide. The vast array of medieval coinage is daunting to a new collector. The book focuses on silver issues which is a great place to start; hence the title. I was impressed by the photography as well as the information on each coin illustrated. Bear in mind it is not intended to be an exhaustive guide book for all coins of the period. That comes later in each person's personal journey numismatically. It is a very tasty beginning treat.

I have an interest in medieval coinage but am not totally immersed in it, I pick and choose. For that purpose the book is perfect for the non specialist and should be in any numismatic library. On a practical matter, the book saved me money right after I received it. The section on modern fakes illustrated a coin I was ready to purchase as original. The price of the book was well below the cost of purchasing a fake.

There is a dictum in the numismatic community: "Buy the book before you buy the coin." This book certainly qualifies as confirmaion of that dictum and is a great addition to my library. Buy the book.

Though excellent as a self-published book (one of the best I've seen lately on small topics of little interest to "real" publishers), I was left agog at the amount of material included. If you have a serious interest in medieval coins and have already collected for several years, this probably is an excellent book. To a beginner, however, I can only describe it as overkill. I know it goes with the territority, but I just wasn't willing to absorb page after page of information on variant lettering styles and the complexities of single rulers being known by multiple names on coins of their various territories. I started out wanting to know some background and general information on coins of the period (before dated coins became common), but there was so much information here it was just hard to focus, especially as I did not already have a collection of a few dozen coins to compare with what was being said. The view is distinctly European, with much of the author's experience in the Netherlands, and I didn't see the same things on Ebay or dealer sites that the author seems to find--in fact, almost none of the coins I currently find on Ebay match up well with anything I could find described in the book, which may just mean that I don't understand enough about the area to even order from Ebay. There also are numerous references to European Ebay sites, which I seldom visit because of incredible shipping charges on everything.( Since I sometimes see the same coins with identical wear patterns from different sellers on Ebay, I suspect that counterfeits are much more common on Ebay than I would have expected from the coverage of the book.)
Overall, the book itself is excellent and well-produced, lacking the massive number of typos and mismatched captions, etc., so common in self-published books, and I could recommend it to a collector already familiar with the field who wants to expand his or her knowledge. For a beginner, however, the book is simply overwhelming--in fact, I've decided it is not worthwhile even thinking of collecting medievals because I probably wouldn't live long enough to ever identify even a few of the basic types. A labor of love, but just not for a true beginner.

This book is an awesome educational coin reference book, and very ENTERTAINING!!!

The Collecting Medieval Coins: A Beginner's Guide is large in size, but light enough to easily handle.

It provides a wonderful amount of background information on these coins, as well as plenty of actual size, colorful photos of many coins, with additional enlarged photos that enhance the finer details of each piece.

Although listed as a Beginner's Guide, I think this includes more than enough data for experienced collectors. I would highly suggest that anyone use this book for teaching purposes too! You can quickly present various clear and well-ordered pages of coin information to other people you are working with.

The book is comprehensive at 386 pages, but it has a larger text font-size than most books, and is a pleasure for your eyes to digest.

When I opened this book, I instantly knew that I would be referring to the many different sections of this book quite frequently-- for the rest of my life! It is a fascinating treasure, that you will want to have handy- ALWAYS!

The single best -- and to my knowledge, only -- general overview of medieval coins available. With hundreds of pages, well-written and informative text, numerous high-resolution color images, and an invaluable references section, Mr. Torongo has created a book that caters to both the beginning coin collector and seasoned numismatist alike.

As anyone with an interest in medieval coins already knows, the reference books required to become a knowledgeable collector span many languages (how many can you read?), prices (if you’re lucky enough to even find them), and centuries (many primary attributions used today reference authors and works published in the 1800s). For the individual with limited resources, Mr. Torongo’s book provides a much-needed bridge over which the reader can cross into the diverse and complex field of medieval numismatics.
