5.0 su 5 stelle The Sound and The Fury.....Miles Davis 20 giugno 2015
Di Keene - Pubblicato su
Formato: Audio CD Acquisto verificato
There is a certain exhilaration and joy in facing the darkness of life full on. That's what Miles Davis's jazz/rock fusion music has always done for me. It's defiant and true...

When I want to listen to sounds that move me and shake me (without intruding vocals and lyrics) I turn to Miles. His music speaks volumes without saying a word. This tribute to Jack Johnson and other fighters and artists is a very unique listening experience. Similar to "Bitch's Brew" but more intense and darker. The big difference is the drumming and the guitar work. The key here is the improvisation and none of these musicians sounded as good as when they played with Miles Davis. The excellent improvisation allows you to listen to many takes of the same theme and not get bored because there is a difference in each take. He holds the whole thing together with his mournful, evocative and powerful trumpet. You can listen to it straight through or mix it up like I do. Love it. Great production and a very handsome box set. Probably my favorite box set of all.

The complete sessions of "In a Silent Way", "Bitch's Brew", "At the Cellar Door" , "Jack Johnson", "On the Corner" and "Dark Magus" represent to me the pinnacle of Mile's music. No one but Miles Davis made this kind of one will again either. But I like all of his art....from the beginning until he died. His art, his music and legacy live on.

Also, if you want to know more about Miles the human being and artist I recommend the Autobiography and the book "So What'.....written by John Szwed. Davis was a flawed human being. Has there ever been an artist that wasn't?

Wow, five discs of incredible jamming by Miles Davis joined by some of the finest musicians of their time (and the present day). The Complete Jack Johnson sessions has a lot to recommend it. The playing is very groove oriented with the soloing setting apart each track. I frankly enjoy the raw material much more that Teo's final edits for the original single disc album.
One warning, even the greatest Miles and John M. fans will find it hard to listen to 5 or more takes of tracks like "Willie Nelson" in one sitting. I strongly recommend mixing up the tracks by either burning a mixed copy of each disc or programming your CD player. Listened to in this way, you don't tire of the same groove for an hour, and you'll find that just about every track in this box set holds a wealth of treasure (disc four is a bit out there, but I'm sure a lot of listeners like this flavor of Miles as well).
If you enjoy electric Miles, especially with a streamlined guitar oriented band, this set is priceless. It would also appeal if you like instrumental King Crimson, the Grateful Dead's jams on a good night, or other progressive rock and fusion. Packaging and remix sound quality are outstanding.

this is a complete glimpse over an specific opus of this great musician. they say that jimi hendrix's music influenced miles davis in unsuspected ways; they even made some jam sessions in electric ladyland though it seems that there are no recorded evidence of this. hendrix where a major sonic influence over several musicians in different genres.
in these five discs you will find some of the best music; it is also an historical record because it shows us the development between fussion jazz: it's not complete rock nor complete jazz, just GREAT music!
if you are hesitating, thinking "well, perhaps i can make it just with the single disc", don't limit your experience and get the complete sessions. you will find great material here that is not in in the single record. i bet that if youe get the single edition, you will be asking yourself, utterly curious about the complete sessions. so don't be shy and get this box set. GREAT price, isn't?

5.0 su 5 stelle The Gods at play (again!) 3 febbraio 2010

Miles and Co. take you by the scruff and say "We're going for a ride!". And what a ride. Sure, there are repeats and thematic echoes along the road but the ride is never, never dull and there's something to enjoy all along the way to the end of the journey. This is music that is bold, adventurous, dexterous, sassy, sharp and sometimes so downright brilliant that you just have to laugh. It jumps, pokes, scrapes, swings, sways and blows. I have always loved the original album and now with this complete set my appreciation and enjoyment has increased immeasurably. Don't worry about the nay-sayers who decry the multiple versions of numbers in a row. Regard those versions, as someone else here has aptly described them, as one long tune with repeated motifs and variations on a theme. Like 'The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions' this is The Gods At Play.

5.0 su 5 stelle Great fun listening to some master musicians 22 agosto 2006

I love this set - each CD packed with music, 5 cds... some of it rambles, some of it bounces, but all of it rocks. There's even some very nice blues on here.

I suppose this is a relative of having DVD movies with the outtakes added in at the end. There are variations on variations on these CDs of various grooves laid down - the very first CD has piles of Sonny Sharrock goodness messing with his echoplex - and is my personal favorite.

I don't know what people are thinking about when they say things like "never meant to be heard" - why wouldn't music aficianados want to hear master musicians at work?

well, perhaps that's where the line should be drawn. If you are fascinated by music, musicians and how pieces are created - this set is for you.

It's all in the variations and nuances of technique and style ... each take a little different. Some A LOT different.

it's a beautiful and very affordable pleasure - go get it!
