At age 25 Barbara Allan became one of the over 9.1 million people in the United States with an autoimmune-type arthritis. Her arthritis was triggered by a bout of bacterial dysentery caused by eating food contaminated with a bacterium called Shigella. Reactive arthritis was the name given to her condition. In many respects, it is very similar to rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, she eventually got well using methods proven to work for rheumatoid arthritis. The arthritis came on very suddenly and left her in chronic, overwhelming pain that often made it difficult to walk even a few steps without passing out. Sometimes the pain was so bad that she was incapable of rational thought, or any thought at all. Sometimes her hands hurt so much she couldn't even hold silverware well enough to feed herself. For years she lived with the loss of many things that she had valued highly: her health, her mobility and to a some extent the use of her mind. She lost friendships, status, the ability to continue as a graduate student, and the ability to hold a regular job. Usually this type of arthritis goes away within a month, but her case went on for years. Her doctors didn't know what to do with her. Nothing they tried did much good. Her illness led her to devote 11 years of her life to systematically researching and personally testing promising alternative therapies until she perfected the nine secrets that successfully cured her own difficult disease. Eventually she was able to completely overcome her arthritic condition using the nine secrets mentioned in the title of her book. Each method provided a lasting and dramatic improvement in her condition. After years of having difficulty just walking from one room to another, she now enjoys walking many miles a week and goes on 30-50 mile bike rides for fun. She has regained full use of her hands and her hips. The pain and fatigue are gone. Today she is totally arthritis-free and shares with others what helped her get well.

I have osteoarthritis in both my ankles. When I was 19 I had some serious ankle injuries, but they healed up and I had been back playing competitive sport at a high level for a couple of years before one day at training my ankles started to hurt for no apparent reason. For the next 16 years I had chronic ankle problems as the joints slowly but surely degenerated. Initially I only noticed the pain when I did too much activity, but eventually I got to the point where my ankles hurt all the time no matter what I did. Over the course of that time I consulted more than 40 different medical professionals about the problem. I mostly consulted doctors, surgeons, podiatrists, and physiotherapists, but also a chiropractor and various different naturopaths and alternative medical practitioners. I had 5 operations, hundreds of hours of physiotherapy, changed my diet, tried all the supplements, and even tried things like accupuncture, prolotherapy, and adult stem cell therapy. Some of these treatments helped a bit, but none of them fixed the underlying problem. For instance, after the adult stem cell therapy my joints looked significantly better under x-ray and ultrasound, but I didn't feel much better. Then 9 months ago I started following Barbara's regime. Within a couple of weeks my pain was negligible. It took me many months of testing to work out all my problem foods, but I now have total symptom control as long as I stay on the diet, and slowly but surely I feel like the underlying damage is healing. Yes, it is a pain to stay on the diet, but it is absolutely worth it, and the diet is getting easier as I am slowly regaining tolerance to some of my problem foods. Barbara's program has given me a whole new lease on life. In a few months I have gone from feeling like a broken down old man at only 37 years of age, with anything that required me to be on my feet a misery, to thinking about all the things I can do with my new body.

I felt that the title of this book is a bit vague, because the book is all about changing the way that you EAT, therefore it would help the arthritis. I assumed there was more to this book than just diet control, and eliminating food groups as a way to test if a food is triggering your pain. I would not have purchased this book if I'd realized that there was only information about eating and recipes. I'm feeling disappointed because most of this food information is stuff that I already know. I didn't learn much about arthritis in general, and this food elimination plan is all-purpose and can reflect onto other disorders and conditions, so it is not a book specifically about arthritis, in my opinion.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and have been helped a great deal by the information from this book. In fact it seems I have vasculitis and considering this was not diagnosed for 20 months, I am fairly confident that I'm not being hysterical to say that the information in this book has likely saved me permanent disability or something very serious like kidney damage (maybe death) since I was very unwell and even presented at ER with completely numb and inflamed legs and was sent home considered to have anxiety. I have a high anti-CCP result which usually indicates severe disease and I also have a strong family history with my mum and brother both crippled by RA yet I have benefitted a great deal by Barbara's recommendations.

From the information in this book things have slowly improved. I do not wake up puffy in my extremities anymore. I do not have pain that makes my bed feel less of a comfortable safe place to rest and recharge but more like a war zone.

I have also appreciated the fact i have emailled Barbaras office a couple of times and always received a well though out reply.

I admire Barbara's tenacity. Applying the methods in this book is hard work and will require permanent change on so many levels but this is preferred to just watching RA turn a destructive course through your own body.

If I were a motivational speaker I would be yelling at an audience of RA sufferers and telling them to get off their backsides. Buy this book and just keep doing all it says until you see improvement. You have nothing to lose but some nasty pain and destruction and perhaps a pervasive pattern of some sort that is affecting your quality of life.

Pretty good book. I've had rheumatoid arthritis for fourteen years. The author did a ton of research. I really like that she recommends meditation as a help. I don't think one needs to be tested for all the foods one reacts to, though. I am systematically using a safe foods list ( sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, no soy, gluten free, greens, non -citrus fruits as a baseline diet and adding a new food every two days. I'm writing down my food and writing down how my joints are. So, the book is very interesting and I have not used the testing the author recommends. I am seeing Dr. Klaper (he's online, too) and he has been very supportive and helpful. I eat plant based, no oil, gluten free, no soy and I am getting better.
