Sinossi

You may notice me, but you will never know me.
I prefer it that way.
I am the daughter of a monster.
Born from blood and lies.
Dead before I have truly lived.
But Elian tells me that I'm different.
He tells me that I'm beautiful.
That I'm an enigma wrapped in irresistibly complicated skin.
Elian says that he loves me.
These words terrify me.
I can't trust love.
Or hope.
Or truth.
Because I fear the beast inside.
It threatens to drown Elian and his sweet, unconditional love.
It's a beast that will destroy everything.

**Reader Warning**
There is NO warning. I won't tell you if there's a HEA, a cliffhanger, or a love triangle. Just read it and find out for yourself but please don't post spoilers.
The fun of a story is figuring it all out!

*Note- this is a psychological thriller and nothing like my previous books!**

In tutto.
E poi ho aspettato. Come lei.

Ossessione.
Ero quasi gelosa di lui, perché poteva averla.
Ero quasi gelosa di lei, perché poteva averlo.
Come volevano. Quando volevano. Dove volevano.

Negli sguardi.
Nel sangue.

Fin dall'inizio io sapevo.
Continuava a sussurrarmelo, rigo dopo rigo.

Main characters: Layna and Elian
Told in alternating POV's between Layna and Elian. Past references were indicated in italics reflecting on past scenes of memories of the times spent with Layna's father.

Layna was a survivor of solitude. This story depicted her journey into a life of solitude. Layna sat in Denny's every morning watching Elian and his friend at a nearby booth. For three months she observed from afar until one morning her laugh brought Elian's attention to her.
Layna and Elian were too lonely souls connected by a darkness. This bonding tethered their haunting souls.
Layna found a unique way to unlock the secret memories of her past in hopes of setting the past free to move on in the future. In order to unlock those secrets she needed the key held by Elian who also held secrets. Together the painful truth was revealed.
Layna and her father shared secrets hidden in the stars. Layna continued assigning stories to the stars as a reminder of what she shared with her father.
Layna's character loved her father despite the monster he was. Layna believed she carried the blood of a monster and wondered if she too was a monster. Her mother loved her father despite him being a monster.
Layna was a young girl yearning for her father's love. A love shared by spending time together and sharing stories about the stars.

Elian found love in the monster who bonded with pain and loss. Elian had a love he cherished never knowing that this one person held the answers to releasing his pain. Layna's love unlocked the secrets for Elian's healing.

This was a story about a twisted love/hate relationship Layna had with her father. Her father's love molded her into the person she became. Layna became a woman who craved the twisted love of a broken man. Layna needed to crush the happiness from Elian and bring him back to his misery. Two characters tied by twisted contradictions of love and hate. A hate for the past that were ladled in lies and a future full of healing.
Layna was a conflicted character torn between what was taught to her by her father and what was bred into to her by her father. Then the battle of her her brothers desperate words of conviction to disprove she is nothing like him. Yet her actions and cravings are testaments to her willpower to quiet the urges. Her father taught her not to be ashamed of who she was. To accept the craving.

One of the first things I noticed about this book on Goodreads was the fully written reviews with no ratings. And then I read those reviews. Hmm, they don't seem to be negative... but they aren't exactly positive, either. That just made me want to read the book even more.

This is not the first book I've read by A. Meredith Walters. It is, though, the first book of hers that I've read that isn't romance (although this may be her only non-romantic book, I'm not sure). The Contradiction of Solitude is a psychological thriller (which I certainly prefer over hack and slash/gory thrillers all day long). Now, I certainly won't pigeonhole authors and only read one genre of book by them. In fact, I love seeing authors branch out and take on something completely different than their norm. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (it works here!).

The Contradiction of Solitude captivated my attention from the very first page. I was enthralled. Even knowing the ending (it was predictable, which explains the 4 star rating), I devoured this book.

Even though I loved this book, I know it won't be for everyone. You can't go into this book looking for a romance (which the author is known for). You'll be disappointed. However, if you're looking for an interesting, twisty, psychological thriller then this may be the book for you.

WOW!! This book grabbed me by the back of my mind and squeezed my heart and soul dry.
This book weaves a demented web of suspense, hope, and sorrow through your very soul and sets up camp in the back of your mind till the last page is turned and all you can do is thank the stars you survived this tragedy.
My only glitch with this book is although there are LOTS of Oh. My. Gawd. moments some parts I almost wish Meredith Walters would have twisted a bit more so I didn't see the ending coming. But I loved it all the same.
If you like the demented twisted stories you might find in a Stephen King novel, you will like this book. She has a ways to go before I would compare Meredith Walters to the great Stephen King but I feel she is on her way for sure.

I love that this author took a chance on something and veered from her norm. I am one of her many fans who purchased this the moment they saw it was live. I, for one, was captivated, intrigued and completely amazed that this is the same author of the previous books I LOVED! This was truly an incredibly written novel. So different from the other’s which were beautiful in their own right. I.AM.ASTOUNDED! But, be clear, this was not a romance novel. There is “romance” in it. But it is a psychological mind f@ck! Don’t go into this expecting the same style of writing from this author, because you will be disappointed. If you like suspense and thrillers like me, then I say give it a chance. I mentioned to my reading partner, Foxy, that the writing in this book reminded me of Tarryn Fisher’s writing. This book was dark, intense and twisted.

Walters’ words were carefully chosen and lyrical, which made the story even more mysterious. I loved the pacing, the sentence structure and word choice. Each one making this novel more menacing, more meaningful and more treacherous.

Sentences were fractured, like the minds of the characters who hoplelessly tried to make sense of everything.

“Tick tock goes the clock…”

“Lines of destruction etched into skin…”

The story was powerful and chilling. I had to step away a few times so I could gain my bearings. And that to me is one mark of a good book. If the writing and story stirs emotion in me, then it is a winner. I was sad, I was horrified, and I was angry. Walters' writing brought forth those emotions in me. Further, she made me think. In my previous work days, I was a counselor for both adult felons and juveniles who were in the juvenile justice system. I have dealt with personalities such as those represented in the pages of this book. The cold, calculating, antisocial and the ever despondent, delusional, self-destructive individual. Walters did a FANTASTIC job getting into the heads of her characters. She brought their thoughts alive on the page. This was not an easy thing to do! I couldn’t help but compare these characters to those with whom I have previously dealt. It made me wonder where they are now, what they have become. She reminded me that we are all human. That everyone in their humanity is flawed. That evil exists in everyone, it is what you do with it that determines what you will become. Finally, she reminded me that we are all hanging on by a thread. Some have thread thicker and sturdier than others, but we all have a breaking point.

“We were perfect in our mad sanity.”

While I acknowledge this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I can’t stop thinking about it. This book sucked me in! It completely, and wholly owned me. So, yes, it appears I am the odd man out here, but this was a 5 star read for me. And, I’m okay with that.

“Doubts were dangerous. They clouded the mind and dampened the soul with what ifs.”

"One day you will see that memories are the only places where we can truly be free. To remember things as they should be."

Holy heck. That was my first impression of this psychological thriller. A week later and I'm still feeling like... what the heck happened?? The progression that happens from the beginning to the end, will make your head spin. It starts off by luring you in; it gains your trust. Slowly, that trust starts to crumble away.. piece by piece. By the end, you'll feel like the story completely betrayed you, but you won't be able to put it down. The downward spiral starts so slowly that you don't even realize you're being dragged down, until it's too late and you're scrapping your fingernails trying to hold on.

This is NOT a romance. It pulls you in with the prospect of some sort of romance, but it's a trick. This is the story of what happens when you reside in the deepest, darkest corner of your mind. It's what happens when you let your mind unhinge and no longer care about good and bad. You give into the urges... no matter how sick.

The ending. At some point you see it coming, but think.. there's no way that is going to happen. These characters won't go there. Don't be fooled into thinking anyone's feelings matter. This book with take your heart, stomp on it then kick it to the side.
