The author kept my attention throughout the entire book and did not skimp on the details in regards to the typical British ambience and general social attitudes.
I personally recommend it for thriller readers.

The protagonist, Lorne Simpkins, clearly has issues in her personal life, but she wouldn't be as interesting if she didn't. She wasn't always a sympathetic character, though that only served to make her more real. Are any us either completely good or completely bad? In a sense, that theme runs throughout the book. I even felt a degree of understanding for the bad guys at times.
The pace felt right for a police procedural and, although it focused mainly on the progress of the investigation, there was enough of Lorne's home life included to connect with her as a person. When you write an opener to a series (which this is), it's very easy to fall into the trap of spending too much time setting the scene for future novels. Although it was clear some elements could very well recur, and there may be some ongoing themes, these weren't overplayed.
It's fair to say it's well-balanced in other ways, with the right degrees of tension, office politics, banter and personal relationships. I can understand the enthusiasm for M.A. Comley's books, and I've already downloaded the next in this series. If you want to give her books a try, I can strongly recommend starting with this one.

Fast paced, nicely gruesome, cold blooded feast of detective work with the flawed heroine battling sexism, un-understanding family as she balances home life with work and a work partner with an unhealthy interest in rubbish food. What could possibly go wrong, I ask you?
To be honest, I found no quarrel with the style of writing, if police procedure flew out of the window with a disregard for PACE and the odd slap and kick here and there, it made the style ‘real’ and it all flowed as it should. Many will disagree and good luck to them - they don’t have to buy any more by this Author. Me? Already addicted!
Thoroughly entertaining read and have bought the next few books in the series to keep me up late at night.

The main protagonist Lorne often acts like a probationer rather than a DI. She is frequently unprofessional in the way she speaks to her colleagues, behaving like a moody teenager rather than an adult. She has few, if any, redeeming features, and is not a particularly likeable character.
The relationship between Lorne and husband Tom stretches credibility to the limit, one minute they are involved in really vicious arguments, the next tearing one another’s clothes off. If they genuinely felt the level of animosity towards one another as expressed in the rows, it is highly unlikely they would still be having sex - not even the ‘make up’ variety. The overall emotional content of their on/off relationship is completely unbelievable.
The book is full of examples of terrible policing - eg. not getting a suspect in for questioning because they lived 200 miles away – since when would that have stopped the police from bringing someone in? A DCI insisting on charging a suspect who clearly couldn’t have been the right person, for numerous evidential reasons - this simply would not happen. The most glaring example of abysmal policing was when two road names were identified as possible locations for the murderer’s cellar, yet when Lorne and her partner later visit a suspect in one of these roads they completely failed to make the connection at the time. At this point I was shouting at my Kindle “even a five-year-old could’ve spotted that!” Finally when the DCI said “I smell a rat” couldn’t help but laugh, even though it definitely wasn’t meant to be funny. There are many other cringeworthy similar examples throughout the book. Suffice to say, if you are looking for a plausible police procedural/crime thriller, this book is not it.
Like many other reviewers here I simply cannot understand the number of 4/5 star reviews, and I’m glad that I downloaded this book for free. If I had paid money for it I would certainly be looking for a refund. I won’t be reading any further books by this author. Caveat emptor!

Lorne Simpkins – recently been promoted to Detective Inspector – suddenly finds herself thrust into the worst case of her career when a headless body is found in the woods. They eventually identify the woman as a wealthy widow living nearby, but it’s when they go to break the news to her sister that the case takes a strange turn.
Before Lorne can start to piece together the macabre murder, a young girl goes missing. Are the cases connected or does she have two killers on the loose?
This book grabbed me from the prologue which, I won’t lie, is utterly brutal. The author pulls absolutely no punches showing you the depths of depravity that the killer in this case will go to, the levels of torture he will inflict on his victims. It is somewhat of a relief when the prologue ends and you are thrust into Lorne’s life.
Lorne’s newly promoted status is putting strain on her marriage; sixteen hour days, a madman on the loose, a boss to impress and a team to lead doesn’t exactly leave a lot of time for house-husband Tom or their child, Charlie and as the cracks begin to show, Lorne time and again chooses her job over her family.
I empathised with Lorne’s plight, but there was the odd time I wanted her, just once, to delegate and choose instead to spend a night with her poor husband who was suffering from a distinct case of cabin fever.
As the victims grow and the puzzle deepens, Lorne is drawn further away from her family and deeper into the horror of the case unfolding before her.
The pace felt just about right – the killer’s motivations were unveiled piece by piece and as Lorne closed in, I found myself reading faster and faster, desperate to get to the end. For me, that’s a key sign of a book that has me hooked.
And the best thing – I’ve discovered a series which has a whole load of other books out that I can devour.
