Sinossi

If you are reading this intro, then I take it that you have an interest in cruise ships. It could be you want to work on a cruise ships, you want to or have taken a cruise, maybe you are looking for tips on cruising or maybe you just like fun stories about cruise ships. If you are interested in any of those items I just listed, then this book is for you.

Before we begin our journey, I guess I should tell you a little bit about myself and why I have written this book. For my cruise ship experience, I worked about 12 years on cruise ships around the world and 2 years working in shore side offices in Florida. I worked with 4 different cruise lines and worked as a scuba instructor/dive manager, shore excursion manager and then in the shore side offices as an IT geek, and finally a few years as an IT officer (yeah, I know, scuba instructor to computer geek, what can I say, it has been an interesting journey).

Stories in this book include ones about:
Getting a job on cruise ships
Life on board ships
On board romance
Hurricanes
Running aground
Adrift at sea
Kick backs
Falling overboard
Living on a tropical island
Crazy things the crew and passengers do

and much much more........................

I also have photos about my life at sea that can be seen at: www.cruiseshipstories.com
Looking at these photos will bring my sea faring stories even more to life.

3.0 su 5 stelle Don't expect a lot but if your interested in anecdotal stories about cruising or the cruise industry its not a bad casual read 17 novembre 2014

Decent read. As some of the other reviews point out there are quite a few grammatical errors throughout which the author forewarns of in the intro. If you are staunch member of the grammar police you may find the steady flow of punctuation errors, misspelled, and misused words somewhat distracting at times. That being said this book gives a decent first person account of the workings on and around a cruise ship from someone who has been there and done that and is not necessarily a polished writer. The author mainly focuses on his experiences while working as a diver and guide on snorkel trips and later as part of the ships shore excursion management team and finally as an IT officer. It does tend to wander bit and I was left wondering sometimes as to the chronological sequence of some of the stories. It seems to be mainly set in the 90's and early 2000's and I kind of wish it would have had more stories about more modern day cruises, as he points out a few times that things are no longer done the way they are described in the book. Don't expect a lot but if your interested in anecdotal stories about cruising or the cruise industry its not a bad casual read.

5.0 su 5 stelle Couldn't put it down. 7 agosto 2014

I really enjoyed Cruise Ship Stories by Guy Beach, which I finished in just a couple settings because I couldn't put it down. Throughout the book, I felt honored to be entrusted with Guy's experiences and perspectives of working on cruise ships for 12 years. What a life he has had!

For those who gripe about editing issues--really, so what? He explains that he didn't have an editor while writing, and his telling of his experiences is all that counts. It truly is like sitting in a bar with him as he confides in you. I have been a professional editor for 15 years, and his raw form of writing didn't bother me in the least. Heck, I would've edited his book for free--I enjoyed it that much!

Guy gives a gift to his readers by letting us into his world; many of the things he confides are personal, even things that were quite traumatic. Really very generous of him to share them with everyone.
1.0 su 5 stelle Possibly entertaining stories that are poorly written. 2 gennaio 2014

Warning. The author claims to want to write this as if he were telling these stories in a bar. I think that was because he was fairly inebriated himself as he wrote it. There is no continuity to the story as he jumps back and forth through-out his career. He frequently teases with sexual taglines, but then acts as if his readers are all pre-adolescents, and can’t write about anything risqué. Poorly conceived and written, with myriad holes and gaps.

The writing style is mixed (or mixed up, more accurately), and his grammar and punctuation are horrendous, He obviously wrote his ramblings using some sort of free download word-processing software that didn’t have a spell checker.

Overall, it resembles a poor first draft in a freshman writing class.
3.0 su 5 stelle Needs a good editor and a competent proofreader. 31 gennaio 2015

This book is very seriously in need of a good editor and a proofreader. Occasionly, it rambles to the point of being incoherent. Grammatical errors clog almost every page to point of making reading an endurance test for the mind.

Some of the "stories" are funny; a few are interesting, and one or two are informative. But none are gripping or memorable. The reader who's looking for a good 'life below decks on a cruise ship' read might be able to find a few interesting parts. But, overall, the search for these interesting stories will not be worth the effort.

4.0 su 5 stelle Fun engaging 14 giugno 2014

Yes this book has all kinds of typos and grammatical issues but I really didn't care. Usually an amateur style of writing would drive me crazy but he has a really cute "familiar" style of writing that makes this book really easy to read. If you're curious about cruise ships buy this book.
