What happens when four greasers from the '50s reunite in the '80s?

It's 1988, and four men reunite for a special Fifties-themed homecoming celebration at their old New Jersey high school, thirty years after graduation. While in their teens, the boys had been known collectively as the D.A.’s (no relation to the legal profession)—not so much a "gang" as a tight group of friends—but time and distance have brought changes and adult responsibilities Letting go of the past proves challenging for the quartet, which consists of Frankie, the group leader and tough-guy greaser still playing the part at age 48; Denny, Frankie's best friend and the only divorced member of the group, whose misguided counsel to his 20-year-old son backfires in his face; Tony, the romantic, whose marriage and happiness are threatened by the reappearance of an old love; and Eddy, the straight-laced nerd and arguably most centered of the four thrown into emotional turmoil by the appearance of a new one. Now, all four must find the courage to leave the past behind as they come to terms with middle age and the realities of their diverse lives.

The D.A.'s Forever is a nostalgic tale of friendship and romance. It’s part comedy, part drama, part satire. It is by turns funny and touching. It’s raunchy and sexy at times; romantic and sentimental at others. It’s a story of friendship, of old love, of new love, and of a love that will never die.

Explicit content advisory: This book contains adult language and explicit sexual situations and is intended for mature audiences.

5.0 su 5 stelle A penetrating journey into the minds of four middle-aged guys clinging to adolescence 8 novembre 2013

The D.A.'s Forever is an engaging portrait of four middle-aged guys clinging to an alliance that they had formed when they were high school adolescents in New Jersey the late 1950s. The book introduces the quartet in 1988 as they converge for their 30th high school reunion, which the town recognizes with a week-long '50s days celebration. Pulled in different directions by career, family and financial obligations since their high school graduation, the four members of the D.A.'s club had not remained in contact as frequently as they had envisioned. As they warmly exchanged backslaps upon seeing each other at the reunion, they mutually agreed to revive their D.A.'s club. They engage in some juvenile hijinks, and resolve to become a greater part of each other's lives once again. Their relationship had been grounded in mutual protection during the greaser culture of the '50s, but the frays in the fabric of their friendship were showing. At 48 years of age, self-appointed club leader Frankie still swaggered and thrived on sexual female conquests, living life to the unheard soundtrack of Dion & the Belmonts' "The Wanderer." But if the lives of his old pals Tony, Denny and Eddy had been set to music, their song would have been "Out in the Streets" by the Shangri-Las -- "…he don't hang around with the gang no more." Their reunion does, however, exert great influence on the course of their lives. As Tony, Denny and Eddy realize what they lack in common with each other and with Frankie, they also each come to terms with the shortcomings in their own marital relationships, career choices and their resultant underlying unhappiness. Their lives consequently take some dramatic emotional and evolutionary turns during the course of the week-long reunion. Author Laura Pinto takes the reader on a penetrating journey deep into the minds of the four guys as they unravel what is tormenting them. The D.A.'s Forever is a well-conceived and artistically told story that interweaves elements of humor, nostalgia, animosity, sexuality, sadness and hopefulness -- all with a Jersey attitude. The strong street language and sexual encounters that the book portrays are essential to the unfolding of the plot. This is a story that begs to be made into a movie.

It's no surprise to me that this is an expertly written book. Laura Pinto is an excellent writer who knows the "oldies" business and it's fans. She weaves the music into some very deep, complicated relationships.

The book begins with what appears to be a group of very close, very good friends just revisiting what they all consider to be the best time of their lives. By the end of the story, the author has taken apart those friendships and reassembled them. Some of the outcomes were to be expected, but some were surprising.

To children of the '50s and '60s, this will be nostalgic. Even if you didn't "run" in groups like these guys, you'll be able to identify with them, looking from the outside, in.
