Sinossi

War has gone on since the beginning of man’s creation. And will continue until the end of time. This certain evil brings death and pain not only to its victims, but also to the warriors and their loved ones sharing our small planet. It’s not the way we’d like it to be . . . it is the way it is.

Diary of a Vet’s Wife, Loving and Living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, covers an eighteen year period lifted from the author’s personal journals. It took sixteen years to write and reads like a novel.

Divorced with three young children, she begins a journey in search of love she had only read about in books. Eighteen months later, she meets and marries the love of her life, oblivious to the perils waiting and what she would sacrifice for her dream. Her story reveals the day to day struggles of an ordinary family living with the chaos caused by PTSD.

It shows her unblemished love, filled with hope and promise, unaware of the demons vowing destruction. Much too soon her impossible dream is shattered by nightmares her husband doesn’t recall and pain he refuses to share. Her love is unyielding her journey is long. She retreats to a life of secrets in order to spare the children and her family from the truth. Yet she has no place to turn.

Eyes will be opened to the family dynamics of living with PTSD, secrets shared by tens of thousands around the world. The spouses, families and friends who love their heroes and bravely grieve, knowing life will never be the same. These forgotten warriors are left to a battle they were never trained for.

The reader will slip into her world like a fly on the wall as she takes them places most have never been, while bonding with others who know the terrain well. Hearts will be touched long after they turn the last page.

This is a story of love, prayer, desperation and despair. The love of the author for her husband, her desparate attempts to find someone to help him with his PTSD, his desperation and suffering brought on by a disease he did not understand and the despair felt by both of them when they found nowhere to turn. The story is captivating, the book evokes strong feelings and leaves the reader knowing "there must be a better answer for our Vets". The lesson to be learned, in my opinion, is that the government had not anticipated the problems of sending young men into this kind of war with minimal training and it truly had no exit strategy to deal with their problems other than to send them home to their families and forget about them. The author obviously wants others in this situation to know they are not alone and she offers a list of places they can get help. It is an eye opening story that definitely holds your interest.

I picked up Diary of a Vet's Wife and couldn't put it down until I finished it. It was a very sad and very compelling read, dealing with mental illness, depression, addiction, co-dependency, loneliness, despair, and ultimately survival. The end, an unfortunate relief.

I applaud Nancy MacMillan for sharing her story with such courage and honesty in an effort to show others who are living with the same issues that they are not alone and that there is help.

Diary of a Vet's Wife should remind us all that it takes a village -- to help those who can't help themselves.

Get ready for an emotional roller coaster!

Loving, and living with my own Veteran suffering from PTSD, I laughed & cried at so many of the antics and comments because they were exactly the same, just caused from different wars. Being able to connect with Nancy on so many levels made this memoir an absolute pleasure to read.

Don't forget that a portion of the proceeds of this book goes to Pets for Vets!

I finished reading Diary of a Vet’s Wife this morning. I cried when I read Lorne’s letters and I cried when Nancy cried thereafter. It was difficult for me to continue reading at times but I had to know that Nancy and Lorne would be okay in the end. The author indeed is one of the strongest women I know and I am so grateful she wrote this book to help others who are suffering like she and her warrior husband did.

As the story unfolded and the dates were listed alongside the events, I thought about my own life and what was happening at the time. During some of her darkest moments I was my happiest. Other times my life seemed in shambles as well. I admire her courage to "stand by your man" during the most difficult of times. Perhaps it was easier because she knew the enemy was Lorne’s disease and not the man himself. And yet, how difficult that actually made things for her.

I am humbled and in awe. I loved the book.

5.0 su 5 stelle PTSD Explained Through A Spouse's Experiences 2 febbraio 2013

When I purchased DIARY OF A VET'S WIFE I did so thinking that it would be part of my research for a novel I am writing myself. I thought I would skip through MacMillan's writing and glean some details I had somehow overlooked in my other research. (Note: my current writing project is about a Marine veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who has been diagnosed with PTSD.) Much to my surprise my skimming was soon set aside as I found myself drawn into MacMillan's compelling, touching and often painful story. It turned into a "can't put it down" read! Did it help me? Yes! But not only in the manner I was hoping for! MacMillan's journey brings forth a reader's emotions as it unfolds through her memoir. The author and I seem to share a belief that the story of PTSD is one that the American public may not want to, but needs to hear. Especially now that there is a promised end to the Afghanistan presence of U.S. and troops of other nations, which will lead to large numbers of newly returned men and women who have experienced a certain form of hell. If you are at all interested or even curious about PTSD - or have a loved one who suffers from this malady - or want to do some pro-active preparation for the return and re-entry of a loved one - then read Nancy MacMillan's memoir. If you are at all sensitive you will be touched deeply by the sharing of her painful journey.
