Sinossi

Reads like a modern romance, unfolds like a mystery and at the end opens up for interpretation. Are you looking for something surreal?

YES: "a story that challenges your perception"

Time Out Hong Kong: Book of the Fortnight
“Lampila weaves the story in her debut novel backwards and forwards with skill. As the lives of a woman and a man collide after meeting at a conference in Milan, nothing is quite as it seems. And, using two perspectives, certain scenes are visited twice. As two people rarely experience things the same, this lends a unique and insightful dimension. The novel is a realistic take on romance – bittersweet and with ambiguity to let the reader think for themselves.”
— Laura Besley (Time Out Hong Kong issue 124 February 13-26, 2013)

Suvi Lampila is the author of IL B L8, a short play written for three actors and a grand piano, and 7 Days and Counting, her debut novel that has been awarded a Literary Arts Grant by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In her previous life she has been a furnishings officer for a British Embassy, an improper Bostonian and a technical services engineer, better known as a computer geek.

An impresive show of writing from a fresh new author - observant, expressive, and (at times) witty. Looking forwards to new titles.

As the lives of the two main characters collide, nothing is quite as it seems. Lampila weaves the story backwards and forwards in time with ease and skill. The reader has a little work to do in order to put pieces of the story together for him/herself. This is a challenge and I like that.

Due to there being two perspectives, you can read certain parts of the story twice. In my opinion these are some of the most interesting passages in the book, as two people rarely experience things exactly the same. It's therefore extremely interesting to read the same scenario from differing points of view.

Strangely (for me, at least) I got to the end of the book and immediately wanted to start reading it again. I feel that the first time I read it quickly as I wanted to know all the hidden secrets behind the closed doors of the character's lives. However, I feel that on a second, and more detailed read, so much more will be revealed.

This was exactly my kind of a book: witty, clever, funny, surprising, not too long, and one that concentrated on the essential (I get easily bored with too long descriptions of the surroundings etc). Had to read it in one go as I simply couldn't put it down. The thoughts and observations of the main characters were surprisingly realistic - at many points I found myself thinking "that's exactly it!" or "that's exactly how I've thought about it". An amazingly strong piece from a debutant - can warmly recommend this.

I must add that you just have to read this book twice - at least. So many little details only unfold on the second read. It is very exciting to find more and more things that you didn't realise where there the first time round. This is almost addictive...
