In Detail

CSS3 unveils new possibilities for frontend web developers: things that would require JavaScript, such as animation and form validation, or even third party plugins, such as 3D transformations, are now accessible using this technology.

"Designing Next Generation Web Projects with CSS3" contains ten web projects fully developed using cutting edge CSS3 techniques. It also covers time saving implementation tips and tricks as well as fallback, polyfills, and graceful degradation approaches.

This book draws a path through CSS3; it starts with projects using well supported features across web browsers and then it moves to more sophisticated techniques such as multi polyfill implementation and creating a zooming user interface with SVG and CSS.

React to HTML5 form validation, target CSS rules to specific devices, trigger animations and behavior in response to user interaction, gain confidence with helpful tools like SASS, learn how to deal with old browsers and more.

"Designing Next Generation Web Projects with CSS3" is a helpful collection of techniques and good practices designed to help the implementation of CSS3 properties and features.

Who this book is for

This book is designed for you if you are a frontend web developer; it requires a solid knowledge of CSS syntax and of the most common CSS2 properties and selectors.

This is not a reference book, you will learn useful tips & tricks on real life examples.
I was suprised to learn what incredible things you can do today simply with CSS and without the burder of javascript frameworks.

5.0 su 5 stelle Excellent CSS Primer 27 marzo 2013
Di Michael Sypes - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
This is a great primer for those who are already familiar with CSS, and want to learn about the newest features of CSS3. It has a good array of projects to present new declarations and parameters, and is quite well-written. As a result, it manages to do two things very very well:
1) It explains the basics of what's new in ways that can be easily understood for someone who just wants to get up to speed on CSS3's new features, and
2) Develops its example projects to levels of complexity to satisfy a dedicated CSS enthusiast's need to experiment with equally complex undertakings.

As another reviewer commented, this is not a general primer for someone unfamiliar with CSS, but merely for those ready to make the jump to CSS3, which is still a moving target. BTW, the book also handles cross-browser issues, particular for those features which are still experimental very well. Also, you should be at least reasonably skilled in basic Javascript to understand some of the more complex issues, but I'd say this true if you want to use CSS3 anyway. Having a knowledge of other back-end technologies, e.g., SASS, is helpful too.

All in all, a great book that really met my needs. To put that in perspective, I'm primarily a back-end developer in category #1 above.
4.0 su 5 stelle A good book if you want to improve your frontend skills 3 marzo 2013
Di Giuseppe Rota - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
The book is very well structured, every chapter starts with a specific piece of HTML5 and then CSS is incrementally added to refine the results.

Even for a CSS newbie like me it has been possible (and most times eye opening!) to reproduce interactively on my system the examples described in the book.

If there's a small issue (not really with the book but with the topic in general) is with the overall adoption of CSS3 (which in parts is a moving target) on different browsers. But this issue can be solved, using some techniques described in the book.

The concepts described always come with an explanation and are always of the "hands on" kind, very practical.
Throught the book attention to web browser compatibility (IE, I'm looking at you!) is always present. This is usually accomplished using css and javascript libraries like CSS resets, HTML5 shims, and CSS preprocessor like SASS (and Compass) that make a frontend developer's life much easier.

Overall, a worthy read if you want to improve your frontend skills.
4.0 su 5 stelle Intermediate ++CSS & JS coders and Beyond 20 marzo 2013
Di Tar Heel - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
This is not a book for those who are new to CSS3 (period).

Those who have intermediate++ CSS3 & JavaScript skills and beyond rejoice. This is book is fun and has lot's of WOW factor.

The book includes 10 projects:
1 Counting rollovers ~ very cool
2 Unique push buttons
3 Responsive menu ~ nice
4 Zooming user interface
5 Image gallery
6 Parallax Scrolling ~ might give users motion sickness, but cool non-the-less
7 Video filters ~ Sandro really knows his stuff
8 Gauges
9 Presentation style intro similar to Prezi
10 CSS Charting

I've enjoyed the book and the projects. I have definitely learned a lot from Sandro!

4.0 su 5 stelle A must buy book to increase knowledge and practical skills 1 marzo 2013

So, I recently got a request from one of Marketing Research Executives from Packt Publishing to review one of their books Designing Next Generation Web Projects with CSS3 written by Sandro Paganotti. And to tell you the truth, I loved this book. Instead of following a traditional teaching pattern, the book follows an unorthodox project based approach. But beware!!! This book is not for NOOBS who don't even know what CSS3 is. Although the author says that your experience with CSS2 is enough to start up with the book, I would suggest to get a hold on CSS3 concepts first. The rest is taken care of by the book. Every chapter has its own way of solving a problem that web developers face daily. Not only that, at the end of every project / chapter, there is a section that discusses how the project can be successfully degraded to support old browsers. My suggestion would be to buy this book. It is really helpful for teachers or trainers who want to teach some of the more difficult concepts to relative beginners but don't know where to start. Even if you are not a trainer or a teacher, I think every CSS3 developer should go through it at least once. The projects discussed in this book contains many concepts that can be used in different types of project. I loved the way how this book tells its readers about css-reset, google fonts, gradients, shadows, transitions, media queries, box-orient and box-flex, perspective, SASS and Compass, parallax scrolling, masks and how these concepts are used in each and every project.

PROS : Shows Practical usage of each and every concept along with their fallback for different browsers (including the old ones).

CONS : Needs prior knowledge of CSS3 and other modern features to read the book.

My opinion : A must buy book to increase knowledge and practical skills

From the beginning to the end Paganotti explains with simple words and complete examples the way you can design a website with CSS3. The very first chapter is an useful introduction to html5 and differences with previous standards, then it goes deeper in menu, zooming, image galleries, till parallax scrolling, video charting and much more.
The book is great also for the way it present tricks to mantain compatibility with older browsers.
It's necessary to know some Css and Html before reading it.
