5.0 su 5 stelle Acharya S wins again! 24 ottobre 2014

I have several of DM Murdock's Books. My favorite thus far is THE SUNS OF GOD. Excellent read, and quite scholarly. I admit much of it is over my head. She has however made convincing arguments for her thesis, in my opinion.
This Book ;Did Moses Exist: The Myth of the Israelite Lawgiver is no exception. Murdock puts forth the evidence from many sources old and new that the story is just that....a story. Moses, like Jesus, is just another of the ancient myths our ancestors had, that somehow' over the centuries evolved into stories people today except as facts. Most of us growing up in the Western World were taught to believe these fables were true stories, and never had the tools to learn the truth. DM Murdock has provided them for us, if we but just listen to her.
I am no scholar of the Bible, but I know more about it than the average person I meet every day. I spent two years learning about it as a Missionary . Of course I became a scholar of what MY religion taught. I could quote sources, and KNEW what the dogma they taught was. I knew their angle on the myths they believed. It wasn't till much later through a series of events, that I came to the realization that it was all a myth. DM Murdock's books played a significant role in that learning process, and I encourage anyone seeks answers to read what she has to say.

4.0 su 5 stelle Academic to a fault, but thoroughly fascinating 15 luglio 2016

With a renewed interest in the Bible and other religious texts (primarily as literature), I decided to supplement my reading with this, my first book by Acharya S. It covers material similar to Robert Price's MOSES AND MINIMALISM, but whereas Price's book mainly sticks to the Pentateuch, with appropriate references to other religions and mythologies, Acharya S systematically and thoroughly breaks down every conceivable origin for the MOSES myth. It was quite daunting, mainly because of the depth and breadth of documentation, but also illuminating and rewarding. The only points against it might be that she oversells her main points, making it kind of repetitive at times. Also, and I'm no language expert, it seemed as if she occasionally played fast and loose with etymology. Still, the nonstop, brute force manner in which she lays out her case for MOSES being a mythical character absolutely tears the idea of Biblical inerrancy and originality to shreds, in my opinion. The only downside is that those who would most benefit from this book probably wouldn't even give it a shot. Still, as a work of scholarship on comparative religion, I highly recommend it.

5.0 su 5 stelle a very dense book yet important for humanity's sake 9 gennaio 2015

In times like this when incited violence is justified by religious doctrines, we need more minds like Ms. Murdock. For people who have truly read her books with an open mind, you'll realize that her erudition is way beyond than the bulk of her detractors; theists and atheists alike. In her latest book, she took it up a notch and made a scholarly work that actually deserves to be used as a textbook for college and graduate school students. To be fair, this book of her is the most dense that she has to spin off a study guide separately, and not only that, it is loaded with primary sources in their original language.

This book has so much information that will shame most history encyclopedias. For example, her discussion of the proto-Israelites, the rampant departures of people in Africa towards Levant and Mediterranean which is not seen in TV shows (ahem NatGeo), and my most favorite part is the lack of historicity of the events in Pentateuch as well as Moses himself. Just like the canonical gospels, Pentateuch is written by anonymous authors and apologist rely on the slimmest scientific evidence in attaching Mosaic authorship. Just like Jesus, Moses's life is filled with anthropomorphized allegories and metaphors. In part 1 of Zeitgeist, there's this brief parallels between Sargon and other pre-Judaic lawgivers, she expanded that and spilled more ink to other lawgivers with parallel stories (Tammuz, Dionysus, Osiris, etc). She shows the art of myth making and that the Moses story is not as linear as the pagan tales and evidence shows that the Moses story is also a composite of pagan lawgivers.

One more thing, she presented information and theological works that are not taught in Catechism or Sunday school. This book is an important work for the betterment of humanity. This book reminds me of her conclusion on her third book Who Was Jesus:Fingerprints of the Christ that we must be able to examine any sort of holy writ because our global structures are based on it and that instead of ascribing them as history, they are man made stories that poses more harm than good.

5.0 su 5 stelle One of My New Favorite Books 8 settembre 2014
Di Tina Rae Collins - Pubblicato su

A friend suggested this book to me. I had already read two of Murdock's books and wondered how she could possibly have more to say that I needed to hear. However, trusting my friend, I bought the book. As I began reading I realized why my friend felt I would benefit from another book critiquing the stories of the Bible. Again, this author has surprised me with her research, scholarship, and thorough consideration of her subject matter; and I am grateful for her professional handling of the material she discusses. I also appreciate the work she has done to find and share information that would take me years and tedious work to uncover. This book, along with Suns of God and Christ in Egypt, is now one of my favorite books. I have underlined and starred many fascinating facts and made notes in the margins so that I can more quickly find what I need when discussing Murdock's findings with others. I believe it is important that we all consider the knowledge handed down by the ancients, not just by our own cultural ancestors but by those with whom we may disagree, or at least think we disagree. Did Moses Exist? has been an eye opener for me, and I'm thankful to my friend for telling me about it.

4.0 su 5 stelle Tons of Info, Easy to Get Lost In 8 giugno 2016

Dense with information, well-researched, but overly antagonistic to people of faith (even though I agree with her conclusions,). Also, the book is laid out in a meandering fashion which makes the sheer amount of material daunting to tackle. It's easy enough to read, but it would benefit from a tighter layout and some attention to the flow of information. Unfortunately, D.M. Murdock passed away recently. :(

If you're interested in Biblical criticism, OT minimalism, or you just want to challenge what you think you know about Moses, this is a great resource, and buying it will help support her son, so it's win-win!
