This is a standalone novel

***A note from the author about this book: Donners of the Dead is a historical horror romance set in the Old West of 1851 – couples were often thrust into marriage together with short courtships, racism was widespread and not overly frowned upon, and women had little to no rights. What wouldn't fly in today's day and age was unfortunately the norm back then - it is worth keeping that in mind when reading this book. There are themes of racism and prejudice that might upset sensitive readers.There is also sex, adult themes, and gore, because, you know, zombies.***

~~~Jake McGraw was unlike anyone I’d ever known. He was brash, rude, unapologetic and arrogant; chauvinistic, close-minded, and terribly stubborn. He was built like a tree, tall with a hard chest and wide shoulders and hands that looked like they could wrestle a bear. He was a cigar-chomping, scruffy-faced, beast of a man. I was pretty sure I hated him. And I know he hated me. But among the flesh-eating monsters in these snow-capped mountains, he was the only thing keeping me alive.~~~
The year is 1851 and pioneers in search of California gold are still afraid to travel on the same route as the tragic Donner party did years before. When the last wagon train to go into the Sierra Nevada mountains fails to arrive at their destination, Eve Smith, an 18-year old half-native girl with immense tracking skills is brought along with the search party, headed by an enigmatic former Texas Ranger, Jake McGraw.
What they find deep in the dangerous snow-covered terrain is a terrifying consequence of cannibalism, giving new meaning to the term “monster.” While the search party is slowly picked off, one by one, Eve must learn to trust Jake, who harbors more than a few secrets of his own, in order to survive and prevent the monstrosities from reaching civilization.
Additional note: This book contains two excerpts from upcoming books - Karina Halle's Dust to Dust (Experiment in Terror #9) and Madeline Sheehan's The Beginning of the End. As such, Donners of the Dead ends at about 95% on your Kindle.
5.0 su 5 stelle Love, love, love! Very different take on zombies. Who knew the West was that scary? 23 gennaio 2015
Ok, so I know a lot of people are getting really tired of zombie books. It’s hard to come out with a new idea about flesh eating monsters, and yet Karina Halle does it and she does it fabulously!
Firstly I went into this thinking this was a zombie book or something quite similar and I recommend getting that out of your mind. It’s totally not the norm, the plot is completely different from any zombie book and although it is in the genre of zombies I would describe it more as a horror. There are flesh eaters, blood and guts everyone, and definitely some intense moments but what made this for me was not all of that awesome stuff, but the characters.
I have to say, I like Jake from the get go. He’s so a man’s man. He’s gruff and doesn’t care what others think. When Eve meets the party heading into the mountains I immediately noticed an appeal about him that just grew throughout the plot. He’s mysterious though and has a few secrets!
The plot, as I said above, is fabulous. Very different. Things were coming from left field but they made sense with the overall story. The tone was very horror driven even when I didn’t know what in the hell I was worried about!My heart was palpitating and I was all breathing hard and the intensity was just ratcheting up! Nothing had even happened and I was all freaked out!
And of course, last but certainly not least, Karina Halle’s writing is freaking phenomenal. I love her imagination and have not been disappointed in her books to date. The grace she writes with, even while writing fantastical horror, is amazing. I’m totally a fan, but even if I were not I would still have loved this!
5.0 su 5 stelle Karina Halle turned a scaredy cat wuss into a pioneer zombie loving fool! 28 febbraio 2014
I am a huge fan of Karina Halle's writing. The Artist Trilogy and The Devil's series are among my absolute favorite books. Initially hearing about Donner's of the Dead, I wasn't sure I would be reading it. You see, I am a complete wimp. I can't watch scary movies or see anything remotely horrifying without curling into the fetal position and crying. And I definitely do not enjoy anything involving zombies. But, I thought that since it was Ms. Halle's book, I would give it a try. I am certainly glad I did! I couldn't put this book down. It consumed me and if I didn't have a job to go to, I would have read it in one sitting. The story was perfect, the characters were so real and intruiging to me, and yes, the zombies were horrifying! This book was so gruesome and creepy but I just couldn't get enough! And don't let me forget super sexy cowboy Jake McGraw! I have a serious fictional man crush going on! I urge you to take a chance and read this amazing book, you will not regret it!
We've all heard the story of the Donner party. In Donners of the Dead Halle puts her spin on the tale. What if consuming human flesh gave you some kind of immortality? We call them zombies.
Eve is a young woman who lives with her aunt, uncle, their daughter, Rose, and her mother who is ill and doesn't speak. Eve is also half Indian. Her father was Paiute and he is believed to be dead. Eve has a crush on Avery, a farm hand, but he is in love with Rose. Eve is known in town for her tracking skills and one day a group of men pay her a visit wanting to hire her to supposedly help them track a relative of one of the men, missing somewhere in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Avery volunteers as well, and along with a slightly older neighbor as an escort for Eve they begin their search.
Jake McGraw is among the men. An ex-Texas Ranger, he's not a fan of Indians (you'll find out why) and he's along for the money but he's there for protection and hunting. You can tell early on Eve's crush on Avery will be forgotten soon enough because of her and Jake's chemistry.
I think I would have liked this book more if I didn't read the rush of 5 star reviews prior to the release, I had high expectations so I was slightly disappointed with the romance aspect. I didn't think Jake was that swoon-worthy. *ducks head waiting for flying shoes* I thought the action sequences were good. Halle does a great job describing terrifying situations in a way you can picture it perfectly and almost feel like you're there.
I also thought this book was a little too short. I wanted the suspense and sexual tension to last longer. But it was an original concept, I appreciated that. I did enjoy it and I absolutely LOVE Halle's other series'.
5.0 su 5 stelle A must read book that should be made into a movie! 2 ottobre 2015
I am going to be honest here. I HATE historical books. I don't like the way women were treated back then. Now, with that being said. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! What made me take the risk with this book is that Halle wrote it. I have yet to read something of hers that I don't like. As like with all the other books I have read of hers, this one does not disappoint. I tell all my friends that she is the female Stephen King with some really great sex scenes thrown in too. I could so see this book turned into a movie!!
So if you read the blurb about the book you already know what the book is about. What you don't know is that the hair on the back of your neck is going to stand on end. That you will not be able to put this book down until you finish it. The blurb you read is no where close to how intense this book actually is.
Eve is a half Native American half white. She really doesn't fit in anywhere. With being of mixed race she isn't allowed to go to school. She is treated like a farm hand by her Uncle as she is of mixed race and not allowed the same rights of the white girls. Avery the other farm hand is the only friend that Eve has. She thinks she is love with him, but he only has eyes for her cousin Rose.
One day a crew of tough looking men come to the farm. They are needing a guide for the mountains. Word has it that Eve is the best guide in the area. Being the 1800's Eve cannot go off with a bunch of men unchaperoned. They get Donna the overly religious neighbor girl to be a chaperon for Eve. Of course Avery is going along to keep the women safe.
Eve noticed Jake (Mr. Snarl) before they even got to the farm house. He scares her with his gruff mean looks and the scowls he throws her way. She knows it is because of her mixed blood.
Well I can't really go on without ruining the story for you. Just keep in mind this is NOT your typical zombie book.
5.0 su 5 stelle I loved the characters, historical timeframe, horror, slow-going romance, and integration of Native American culture. 4.5 Stars! 4 agosto 2015
Believe it or not, before reading this book I had never before heard about the Donner Party...or maybe I should say I don't remember ever hearing about it. However my husband appears to know all the ins and out of this piece of history so he shared it with me when he realized how it related to this book.
"In the spring of 1846, a group of nearly 90 emigrants left Springfield, Illinois, and headed west. Led by brothers Jacob and George Donner, the group attempted to take a new and supposedly shorter route to California. They soon encountered rough terrain and numerous delays, and they eventually became trapped by heavy snowfall high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Purportedly reduced to cannibalism to survive through the winter, only half of the original group reached California the following year. Their story quickly spread, and before long the term “Donner Party” became synonymous with one of humanity’s most ingrained taboos."
So...on with my review of Donners of the Dead. It was pretty awesome! It's a historical horror romance and Karina Halle totally rocked this genre combination! This fictional novel loosely integrates pieces of the Donner's history but the story is its very own. I loved the characters. I loved the historical timeframe. I loved the horror! I loved the slow-going romance. I loved the integration of Native American culture. I was fully engaged and found myself getting annoyed more than once when I was interrupted and had to put it down.
If you think you might enjoy historical fiction that combines romance and zombie horror then look no further. It's Karina Halle and it's a freakin' standalone! It's a win/win!
My favorite quote:
"Love is a wolf,' he said, the fire dancing in his eyes. 'Perhaps that's why they howl in the dark of night. Love drives them mad like it does to everyone. Fast or slow, whatever way it hits you, love will drive you mad.' 'Does it not seem so silly to be talking about such a thing when we're out here with the wolves and the monsters in the trees?' 'No, Eve,' he said. 'It's not silly. We're still human even in the face of beasts, even with our lives at risk. When you're close to death, love is sometimes the only thing that makes sense in life."
