Macaulay C Hunter has actually written the book Earth/Sky mentioned in his Rune series. Earth/Sky (the movie!) is frequently mentioned and mocked as the latest teen romance sensation featuring a vapid, uninteresting female character who inexplicably attracts the two hottest "boys" in town. While this very premise is why I avoided anything "Twilight" and/or lays the ground for mean-spirited parody that might only make sense to those who've visited Skorungar, I purchased and read this because I'm a big Hunter fan. And he does not disappoint! Written, as always, with a great deal of skill and heart, he manages to keep the shallow Jessa character from being repellant or annoying and creates a fully realized, vivid world (both physical and metaphysical) in Spooner, California. While the basis sounds similar to the Sigil series (teens caught in rising conflict between harmless and malevolent "magical" beings living amongst humans), the plot is fresh and compelling. As always, the writing is clean and skillful and the characters are well rounded. While the conflict is tidily wrapped up by the end of this book, one hopes for A SEQUEL in which we can further explore this world he's created. All in all, a fun read. Four stars because, seriously, it's Earth/Sky. Definitely rush out and read the Sigils and Rune series if you haven't already.

Let me start of by saying that I could only make it to Loc 167 of 5828 (3%) before I could not take it anymore. I am just glad that it was free and all I wasted was 10:00 of my time.

From page one the lead character Jessa is a stuck up little brat, it is all about me, me as an example:

“They won the cruise, two hundred ports in fifty countries spanning six continents, and it lasted nine months total. It was the second longest cruise in the world and something our family could never, have afforded on its own.” Then later on the same page, “I watched their faces fall as the euphoria was replaced by the stacks of dishes in the sink, the bills on the coffee table, and me. Of course they couldn’t take it! But they had to, I insisted.”

This makes her sound like a great kid her, but on the next page after she finds out that she will be staying with her grandfather it “Before I could scream in protest” here is where she turns into a brat.

When her Grandfather tells her that she could use his truck (mail truck) she talks about what kind of brand new car one of her friends had. Then suddenly out of nowhere she “Snappishly, I said, “Aren’t you going to ask me anything? Like about my life?””
When the Grandfather replies “Could say the same.” In addition, this is where I killed the book “You deliver mail all day. There’s nothing to ask.”

She continues to add, “He should have been more excited about a visit from a granddaughter he hardly know. I didn’t expect presents or bouquets or parades, but at least a show of happiness! I was the only grandchild he had. That should be special to him.” Who’s to say he wasn’t excited, but with her attitude and lack of manners. He may have been trying to give her a little space or he may be like that with everyone.

I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone even if it were free

This was a free book I found and decided to give it a try. Overall it's not a bad read. There were some interesting parts and other parts where I just couldn't get into it. For some reason it reminded me too much of another series. I just couldn't get myself to like the heroine Jessa.

I really like the plot of the book and how the book was written. I want to find out what the kids did later on so please write the sequel Above/Below where I can find out what happen to them. I love reading a good book and this one was. Thank you.
