"[A]chingly beautiful..." --Kirkus Reviews
"[G]reat Mother Redwood enchants......" --New York Times
"[E]liza's Forever Trees is a compelling and powerful account, very highly recommended...it stands out as an exceptional tale of personal and world discoveries. Add Alex Walton's vivid drawings and you have beautiful creation of hope and color." --Diane Donovan, Children's Editor, Midwest Book Review, Children's Bookshelf
"[S]tephanie Lisa Tara's writing has such a perfect balance of lightness and depth;the reader sees all creatures, (even snakes) as part of a kind kingdom inhabited with their own native tongue. Her creativity gives the reader treats like French speaking squirrels and a fan favorite in her L-ladybug lingo. "Eet eez mine," the squirrel said in her French accent, which made her angry glare all the more assertive. "Oh mly," said the ladybug. "Ohhhhh mllllly," said several other ladybugs. --Mare Henderson, Teacher, Mom

The first chorus of animal friends is delightfully unexpected in a book for young people, with an emphasis on insects: frogs, owls, clams, grasshoppers, ladybugs, butterflies, and beloved banana slugs. Then the action shifts to the fuzzy mammalian set: an auntie-deer, a fox, chipmunks and bears, and at-first evil bats that see the good in friendship and ultimately save the others from a deadly storm. The book is a lesson in forest ecology.
"Eliza's Forever Trees" is also a celebration of children's literature. Author Stephanie Lisa Tara has dipped into freely-available classics, including Anne of Green Gables, Charlotte's Web, the Velveteen Rabbit, and of course Alice in Wonderland, of which the book is reminiscent. Eliza's grandfather, with whom she lives, uses her mother's many books as doorstops and kindling. Eventually the forest residents make good use of the pages.
The illustrations, by Alex Walton, are spectacular, and the writing lyrical: "She had always been here, always watching and protecting, guarding her family, as all mothers do, for mothers always come back."
Finally, as a geneticist, I can't help but applaud "Eliza's Forever Trees" for another reason: a positive look at an individual with a mutation - a majestic albino tree.

I read this on my kindle app on my Surface, was truly satisfied.
I live in the pacific northwest and on a vacation to the California Redwoods 12 years ago, I brought home 3 redwood sampling. They are thriving in my back yard. While reading this story, I couldn't help but think of them and of the new sampling that have surfaced.

As she sets out to find the Great Mother Redwood and answers with a butterfly friend, she meets a wide variety of friendly animals who offer their help and support on Eliza's quest. While Eliza might not find exactly what she was hoping for, her journey does have a satisfying end.
Eliza's Forever Trees is a beautiful testament to the endurance of love, stories and nature in our hearts. It calls to mind another recent tale of a girl's adventure through a wooded forest with a lively cast of animal characters, The Cats of Tanglewood Forest by Charles de Lint. Both books inspire a love of nature and creatures, and both feature a strong and lovable heroine. Their adventures resemble Alice's fall down the rabbit hole, and would certainly appeal to fans of Alice in Wonderland.
