5.0 su 5 stelle Walking with Elvis in Ireland 25 giugno 2013
Di Clementine Moriarty - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
One of the first links made by Ivor Casey to Elvis and Ireland is his 'Iconic' and ultra famous first name Elvis! Wales has the strongest link, also Ireland and Scotland. What better link to 'Elvis' than his name! Perhaps Elvis knew this, for it is obvious to me that Elvis had a strong love of the popular song, 'Danny Boy'.....as he chose to sing this.... nightly to his comrades at 'lights out' while in the Army in Germany. He does eventually record it, accompanying himself on the piano in his Graceland home.
Ivor Casey leads us through Elvis international influence on music through the '50's, and '60's and especially on the mix with Irish culture at the time. Many early rock bands are enamored with Elvis' very strong influence and it is discussed at length in the book. Also, many interesting anecdotes along the way. All in all....a delightful romp with Ivor, Elvis and Ireland! One last bit of trivia, Elvis love for 'Danny Boy' and thus his attraction to Irish culture is apparent in the fact that the song was sung in Graceland at his funeral. I loved every page of this book!

5.0 su 5 stelle A hugely fascinating and compelling case study 20 febbraio 2014
Di Shane Gillen - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
With the subject of 'showbiz' comes the synonymous parallel of 'exclusivity', but this book offers quite the divergent take on that parallel. We are given a curious and compelling insight into a 'pop' phenomenon's cultural and social impact on an entire country. The author here has really done his research, choosing not to offer the reader the same old tired meandering sentiments on Elvis and Elvis iconography, but instead a carefully written and beautifully fascinating case study of the binaries between the socio-political and cultural practices of the people of Ireland and Elvis Presley's music and impact. The book also considers the filtering of the star's art through Irish media and publications and hones in - without blatantly stating - on the marvels of Presley to have had such a brunt on the Irish nation in its exscinding and censoring eons. A great read, hugely fascinating.

5.0 su 5 stelle Indispensable piece of social history 22 gennaio 2014
Di Pete Donnelly - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
"Elvis and Ireland" is an indispensable piece of Irish social history: it examines how Catholic Ireland had its mores shaken by the "subversive" influence of Elvis, the King of rock 'n' roll and prototypical rockstar. Casey's research shows that Elvis's influence ran so widely and deeply in Ireland that he was the subject of debate in Dáil Éireann, the principal chamber of the Irish parliament; furthermore, the book examines in fascinating detail how the "King" provoked the animosity of Bishop John Charles McQuaid, the quintessential pillar and symbol of Irish Catholic conservatism. What "Elvis and Ireland" does so successfully is thread the reactions and feelings of the media, members of government and of Church, of musicians and artists, into a single coherent and lucid account. This is the métier of any biographer or historian. And then there is the music: I was delighted to learn the details of Elvis's devotion to the recordings of the great Irish tenor Count John McCormack in particular, and I admire "Elvis and Ireland" for the huge degree of research which went into the acquisition of opinions of figures in Irish life on Elvis and his personal influence and/or importance to them. I look forward to reading "Elvis and Ireland" again, and revisiting some of Elvis's music and then music of some of the Irish stars he influenced, and by whom he was influenced, on the way.

5.0 su 5 stelle Great! 14 gennaio 2014
Di Puffi - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated with Elvis. I loved his music and found his personal life fascinating too. I thought that I had read almost everything that had been ever written about this mega star, so you can imagine how I bowled over I was to come across `Elvis and Ireland' by Ivor Casey. Before reading this well researched, well written and beautifully illustrated book, I had no idea that Elvis had any connection with Ireland at all. The author has a wonderful way of telling stories with humour and he definitely knows his stuff. I couldn't put the book down until I had read it from cover to cover. I felt I was sitting in a cafe chatting with an old friend, only when I was leaving, instead of being satiated with caffeine, I was filled with numerous stories and facts about Elvis that I never knew before...
I would definitely recommend everyone to purchase at least three copies of this fabulous book: One to keep in your bookshelf and the other two to be given away as gifts.

5.0 su 5 stelle An Excellent Elvis Presley Biography. 16 giugno 2013
Di Maurice Colgan - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
"Elvis in Ireland" by Ivor Casey is a major addition to the very long list of Elvis Presley biographies. The young and dedicated writer has certainly done his research and uses it to excellent effect. The book is a comprehensive collection of factual information on the impact Elvis Presley had on the world of popular music in the 1950s and much later. Especially in Ireland, an ultra conservative country at that time, to say the least.
It is heartening to read how the schoolboy Ivor was transformed into an Elvis fan during the 20th Anniversary commemorations of Elvis's death. At that time in 1997 Elvis was certainly being remembered by the international media.
Ireland's TV, Radio and newspapers were alive with Elvis stories at that time. Elvis's beautiful ballad singing was sure to reach appreciative and discerning music lovers.
A little out of step with his contemporaries, but with an ear for great music Ivor Casey became a dedicated Elvis fan and in the process collected a huge amount of extraordinary facts about Elvis's enormous impact on the world. Not least here in Ireland where his music is heard on a regular basis.
I recommend the book to all Elvis fans and lovers of popular music. Ivor's unique story is sure to influence other young people in countries abroad. Then we may see, "Elvis in the U.K.", "Elvis in Denmark", Holland, France, and Japan etc.
"Elvis in Ireland", leads the way.
