For seventeen-year-old Ember, life is death. With a simple touch, she knows when someone will die. It’s her curse and the reason she secludes herself from the world. The only person who knows her secret is her best friend Raven.

Then she meets Asher Morgan. He’s gorgeous, mysterious, and is the only person Ember can't sense death from. So when he pushes into her life, she doesn’t mind.

But when unexplained deaths start to haunt her town, Ember starts questioning why she can’t sense Asher's death and what he may be hiding.

"I just absolutely was entranced by this book. I could not put it down and I will probably read it again in the very near future. Yes, I liked it that much. The story was so fresh and had a darkness I love while at the same time having a steamy romance." --Delphina Reads Too Much

Ember by Jessica Sorensen is a true breath of fresh air. Not only is this book one of a kind, but it had me guessing until the very last page and let me tell you, that's a hard thing to accomplish. Ember is tired. Tired of seeing how everyone will die, tired of being alone, and tired of being death's constant companion. Things are about to get much worse with the arrival of two new guys to her small town. One is bright and shining and the other is dark and enigmatic. Both men want her, but what for? With talk of Grim Reapers and Angels of Death nothing will ever be the same for Ember again.

Throughout the whole book readers are drawn to Ember and the insane agony that is her life. The poor girl literally lives with death and where she goes it follows. Her whole life seems to be one catastrophe after another from seeing things when she was young, to being blamed for deaths and disappearances. Despite this she isn't a girl that gives up. You can't help but go through the book hoping that something good will finally happen to her. Ember's best friend Rave is the perfect foil. Bubbly, care free, and living for the next party she keeps Ember together, but readers get a sense that in the end she might be Ember's downfall. The arrival of Cameron and Asher had me hoping that Ember just might get a happily ever after, too bad they brought nothing but mystery and trouble. I couldn't tell who I liked the best or what "team" I'm on. Each character has their own little story that adds to the overall depth of the book. They build a world of death and secrets that readers will get lost in. This is a dark and bleak book where you don't just fall in love with the characters, but the story as a whole.

Speaking of the story as a whole... it was amazing. With the recent popularity of YA books it is hard to find one that is truly original. Jessica Sorensen is an author that has. I have never read a book that combines these particular "creatures" in quite this way. What a combination they make! I definitely will be getting the second book.

*I was provided this book free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, so there were a lot of things I liked about this book, but there were more things I disliked about it. I'd give this novel 2.5 stars

~Spoilers Ahead~

1. The themes and ideas presented in this novel are quite interesting. [Spoilers] Grim Reapers Vs Angels of Death.
Ember, the main character is a hybrid of the two, referred to as a 'Grim Angel' but you don't find this out until the end, although it is quite obvious throughout the book. However, at times I found the writing style rushed, and a little bit confusing.

2. The character Asher was nice. I liked him a lot. He was romantic.

3. The plot and characters had great potential, but I feel it was not written as well as it could have been.

4. The 'death collectors' theme is quite cool. Ember overcomes many near-death experiences because she sucks the life out of things around her to heal herself.

1. The author seems to have put a lot of her own personal music tastes in this novel, making numerous references to multiple goth/emo bands. She names cd's, and takes note of band t-shirts that people are wearing. This is a bit too personal for me.

2. The main characters Ember and Raven are quite shallow. While Raven is obsessed with "Hot" guys, Ember is always noticing how Asher looks, and what he is wearing, and his piercings. This just seemed really superficial to me.

3. Ember has about 5 near-death experienced within the first 100 pages of the novel. I understand that this is part of the plot, but it all happens so quickly, one after the other. AND SHE DOESN'T GO TO HOSPITAL OR THE POLICE ONCE. She gets run down by a hit-and-run driver. Does she go to the cops? No. Someone cuts her breaks in her car and she drives into a lake. Does she go to the cops? No.

4. All the characters are so damn dramatic. Everyone either has: a) A deep, dark secret. or b) has a drug/alcohol/mental problem. No one is ever "normal". It was written like a soap.

5. [Spoiler] Ember's mother tries to murder her, and several hours later her best-friend and brother convince her to dress up and go to a party. She just got stabbed in the chest, for goodness sake. But she goes to the party anyway.

6. Two new guys start at Ember's school, and immediately they are both in love with her, making the moves, and asking her out on dates after JUST meeting her.

7. The author really overdid it with the "Goth/Emo" theme. Everyone seems to have the same "style", and anyone that doesn't you're instantly forced to dislike.

Over all, I found this novel to be quite childish. Obviously it is aimed at teenagers. I'd say 14 to 17 year olds, but it has some dark themes to it: Murder, etc.

That being said, I did read it in one sitting because I wanted to find out what happened next. I just thought the novel could have been executed much better.

5.0 su 5 stelle WOW, Such a GREAT New Series. I LOVED IT!! A Must Read 30 agosto 2012
Di Michelle's Paranormal Vault - Pubblicato su

WOW, this book was amazing; Jessica has done it again, created a great story, which puts you on the edge of your seat! I stayed up half the night to finish this, I could not stop. I had to know what happened next. This book has a broken family, betrayal, impossible love triangle, (but not really in the way you think) and trying to guess who or what anyone is, is hard, you will be wrong!

In this book, Ember is faced with death daily. Anyone she touches, she sees their death omen, and she sees how they are going to die. And some die young and brutally. She has had to face a broken family; her mother called her crazy, and sent her to live with her dad when she was 4 or so. Then had to get back with her mom when something happened with her dad. Basically, she lives with a mother who is out of it most days. Ember is a Goth girl, who is described with long silky black hair, and grey/light blue eyes, pale skin. I pictured her looking like Ksena Solo from Lost Girl on Sci Fi channel, (she plays Kenzi the human, goth girl)

She is a very strong character, and she deals with things daily that I would cringe at if it was me. Not all is what it seems. We have 2 new boys come into the picture, and I love how we do not really know for sure, which is the bad evil one, and which is not. I do not want to say much to spoil anything, this will remain spoiler free. I will add a few good teasers for you.

"Open your eyes," a deep voice asserts. "Come on, not yet. Open your eyes, God damn it." The whisper alters to a desperate plea. "Please Ember... please wake up... you have to be one of them--I know you are."

I didn't feel like I liked Raven, her best friend a lot, I did some, but I do not trust her, and feel bad for Ember that she basically has no one to talk to. I really liked Asher, he has black hair and grey eyes, pale skin, very goodlooking, he is a sweet guy, and right away was drawn to him (I pictured him looking like a young Garrett Hedlum, like he looked in the Eragon movie, with the longer black hair, he was in Tron too, but with blond hair). Cameron, I also liked some, but didn't trust him, he has blond hair, described as dark eyes, not sure color, may have been blue, but something about him seemed too perfect. (I pictured him as a young Cam Gigandet, like he was in the movie Never Back Down, or Roommate movie) I feel all the characters were developed very nicely.

I was happy with the ending, it was left open, as I know it's a series, but not on a huge cliffhanger to where you want to scream, we don't have that, but it still does leave us wanting more, like it should.

Overall, Amazing story, I am honored I was able to read an ARC for Jessica. I highly recommend this book to any fan of Jessica, OR anyone who likes a great paranormal story. You won't be disappointed!

I only have one negative thing to say, I don't like the book cover very much. The girl on cover looks nothing like the description, she has dark eyes and not even very pretty, where Ember is describes as very pretty with the light grey/light blue eyes, and that combo with black hair is very attractive, like the the example I said above, she would look more like Ksolo than the cover. Just my opinion. The cover actually turns me away, if I would not have known Jessica's work, and it was a book I just seen, I would have passed it up. I am guilty of the whole judging books by the covers. Sorry, but so many people are. Again, still love the story, that's the only negative I have. :)

I was provided and ARC of this book for my honest review from the author.

5.0 su 5 stelle Sorensen's best work yet 1 settembre 2012
Di Andrea - Pubblicato su
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
The story revolves around 17 year old Ember. A girl who is from a small town and is cursed. It centers on Ember's ability to see more than the average eye and because of this she is an outcast. Writing a full review of this book would have to include spoilers and I don't want to do that. This book is worth reading. Sorensen gives angels and death a new twist making this story compelling, suspenseful, and romantic. It brings a new perspective to this genre making it unique. The fast pace and action scenes, as well as the mystery makes you want to continue reading. It has the right amount of romance without making it sappy like other YA paranormal romances, and it also has the right amount of lust without making it erotic and not suitable for minors. Like I said, I highly recommend this book. Jessica Sorensen has now climbed the list to one of my favorite writers. Her imagination and creativity are not lacking and demonstrate her talent in her stories. I cannot wait for book 2 to come out and find out what happens next.

2.0 su 5 stelle Ugh how dark and depressing... 21 agosto 2014
Di (;Lucy Lala;) - Pubblicato su

This book was sort of my type. I like to read paranormal things, honestly, but this book was too dark and depressing. Nothin good came out of this book. NOTHING! The guy she was in love with flew off because he broke some rules even though the other guy broke more rules then him but whatever. Ember didn't even know what she was until the last few pages, and is at a disadvantage because their are dark forces wanting her to join their side and she doesn't even know how to use her powers which makes her useless, and a very big pawn to the game.
-sigh- how depressing, I hope everything gets better in the second book, no wonder this book was free, this book has a cliffhanger, the MC sucks in this one (but will probably improve in the rest of the series) and more danger and darkness is going to happen and I'm both excited and groaning.
