5.0 su 5 stelle Long-awaited box set gets my vote for "Reissue of the Year" 18 febbraio 2017
Di GerryM - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

To get to the point – this is a definite 5-star release. Anyone who enjoyed Chris’s work with Traffic and other groups should snap up this set while it’s available. Hidden Masters claims that the first run is limited to only 1,000 copies, and realistically that will probably be it. Yes, the individual cuts will eventually make their way to YouTube and other Internet sites, and the four CDs may someday be reissued on their own, but this particular package will probably never be reissued in its current format.

I’ve been a Chris Wood fan ever since I heard the U.S. version of Traffic’s first album when it was released back in the 1960s. Back then it was unusual for a rock group to include a sax/flute player, especially one who had a sound as unique as Chris’s. Just listen to “Paper Sun” or “Colored Rain” for Chris’s non-traditional way of incorporating sax into a rock song. I’ve been a fan ever since, to the point that the blurb under my photo in my Stamford High School 1970 yearbook included “Admires Chris Wood,” and I still treasure the memories of seeing Chris and Traffic live twice in June 1970 (as a trio).

Not surprisingly, I’ve been waiting anxiously for the release of the “Evening Blue” box set ever since it was announced over a year ago. I was reluctantly to pay the exorbitant shipping fee (close to $60) charged by Hidden Masters, so I was glad to learn last month that I was able to order the set through Amazon. Although Amazon offered it for $149 last month (versus $130 by Hidden Masters), the $149 included free shipping, which made it around $40 cheaper overall, plus I felt more confident ordering through Amazon-US (just in case something went wrong).

My copy (certified as #218 out of 1,000) arrived early this afternoon and I’ve been playing it non-stop ever since. Yes, this set is not cheap, but IMHO it’s worth every penny – 4 CDs jam-packed with 67 cuts, all of them worth listening to, plus a vinyl record and an impressive coffee-table-top-sized book with hundreds of photos, text and other information about Chris’s life. I already own digital versions of all 10 Traffic cuts, the Free cut and the Air Force cut but nothing else, as most of the remaining tracks were previously unreleased or were included on albums that are impossible to find (John Martyn, Gordon Jackson, etc.). All cuts have been remastered and sound great, especially the cuts that had been originally recorded on cassette tapes.

Besides the book, highlights include the definitive version of Chris’s solo album (9 cuts, all different versions than the 2008 Vulcan CD, plus 5 outtakes), four cuts by the short-lived group Mason, Capaldi, Wood and Frog, two cuts for a never-released album by Remi Kabaka, a version of “Sullen Moon” that’s much clearer-to-hear than the cut of Chris’s 2008 Vulcan CD – the list goes on and on. There are even some cuts recorded in 1983, just before Chris died. One magazine reviewer described the music as “unchartered cosmic jazz-funk” and I agree. Hidden Masters also did a good job of sequencing the cuts to keep things varied.

I know it’s only February but Evening Blue is already a strong contender for “Reissue/Box Set of the Year” – it’s that good!
5.0 su 5 stelle A box set of unconditional love for Chris Wood 10 marzo 2017

A box set of unconditional love for Chris Wood, this box succeeds on all levels in its diversity of material, Chris' unreleased works and is seriously overlooked session work with a book is just phenomenal. Never a star, but as the true driving force of Traffic, This box shows off the serenity and joy in Chris' music even if the personal side was much more unbalanced. Completely worth every dime. A truly remarkable achievement.

5.0 su 5 stelle An amazing overview of a major talent who gave light to ... 18 febbraio 2017
Di M. Gaines - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Agreed! An amazing overview of a major talent who gave light to everything he was involved in as "Evening Blue" will attest to. I preordered mine via Amazon U.K. Last January and finally received mine today (#372) I only paid $90.00 including shipping as most U.K. Preorders are under what Amazon here charges in the U.S. Enjoy and spread the word, most certainly the most beautiful presentation of any box set in recent memory making this reissue of the year in my book. Great review BTW
