The world is old and full of lies, but also full of truth, and here between the earth and sky the questions fall to you.

Long ago, when the earth was young, four ancient beings created man to be the bastion of the earth and its creatures, but when the Great Tyrant came and chased the Ancients away, the world was transformed into a place of fear and isolation. Over time, humans lost their connection with a world they had been created to protect, they forgot the ways of their ancient creators, and accepted the Tyrant’s lies as truths from the mouth of a god.
Now, deep in the forests that surround Gray Mountain, two bears find a small child that is abandoned and left for dead. The bears name him Evercloud, raise him as a member of their kingdom, and teach the boy of the Ancients, all underneath the light of the Everflame, the flame that burns atop Gray Mountain as a monument to the integrity and spirit of the bears.
As Evercloud grows, rumors reach the bear kingdom of the Ancients’ return, and now the young man must leave his home to find them, and help save the world he holds dear.
Will Evercloud lose himself in the darkness of the Great Tyrant’s lies, or will he have the courage to judge his own heart, the strength to master the darkness, and the faith to follow his purpose until it burns within his heart like the Everflame?

I liked the overall idea for the story...the beginning captivated and held my interest completely.
And as mentioned above in 2.) the outcome was so obvious, that the last part of the book was, in many areas, easily skimmable.
Despite an enticing ending for this book, I'm not sure I could take another book so dedicated to just one individual (at least not this one).
Could I recommend this book...with some reservation, did have some good moments, especially early on.

When picking free books you never know quite what you are going to get, self published books can have some real problems...poor editing, grammatical errors etc. Reading an indie book can either be a gross disappointment or a wonderful adventure. Everflame turned out to be a wonderful adventure, think Christopher Paolini meets C.S. Lewis.

Usually, epic fantasy depicts great good battling great evil against almost insurmountable odds, but that isn't strictly the case with Everflame. In the beginning battle lines seem clear, but as the book progresses you realize that there is no clear cut good or evil; each "side" is painted in shades of grey and readers are left wondering just who to root for.

Characters are very well developed, Peters gives each a depth that is reflective of the human condition. For example, Eveneye displays great courage and conviction but later suffers from self-doubt and weakness. There is a strong message of personal responsibility through out, but at the same time Peters drives home the fact that no man is an island...we need support from those who love us to become all we have the potential to be.

To qualify why I only gave 4 stars instead of 5, I do not appreciate abrupt cliffhanger endings. I loved this book and would have purchased the second in the series without the teaser ending. I personally prefer a bit more resolution at the end of an installment of a series. I do have to note that Peters handled the ending of Everflame 2: The Burning Man in a much more satisfactory manner.

For me, the best measure of a book is how much I miss the characters after finishing and after finishing the second book in this series I miss them all. The 3rd book isn't even available but I feel as if I am missing life is going on in their world but I am not fortunate enough to travel with my friends. I highly recommend Everflame and the follow up book, Everflame 2.

5.0 su 5 stelle Simply Awesome! 9 giugno 2015

If you enjoy a really good fantasy book, then this book should be on your reading list. In the very beginning I had mixed feelings about the whole bear kingdom. I mean, bears sitting at a round table? However, after 2 or 3 chapters I just didn’t mind bears being bears, I just thought of them as people. I really got into the book when Edgar was introduced. His character is developed amazingly and the story itself was very thoughtful. It had a lot of drama into it and the appearance of “Holy” was right on track. I was already thinking that Edgar would turn into an antagonist, though in the beginning I thought that he would be another protagonist like Evercloud and help him in the quest.

I really enjoyed reading about the world that Dylan Peters conjured. It is interesting, fascinating and at the same time it really resembles our own world, especially the part about Edgar. I was seeing our own world, a bit covered, but nevertheless it was the same world that we live in. the concept of Holy and Great Tyrant is very interesting. And every time I read about it, I had this feeling that the author wanted to tell us, that sometimes what we believe in, might not be the truth; and that the winners do really write the history, whether they are good or evil.

All characters are very well developed and each of them has a unique feel about them. I liked Evercloud as a character and as a person. Sometimes it felt as if he was too unreal. I mean, sometimes he was too good. He didn’t give off the human vibe. It was as if he wasn’t tainted. But then again bears not humans raised him, surely, he wouldn’t know of human bad traits. However, he’s a great character and quite refreshing. Though it cracked me up when Evercloud fell in love with Iolana at first sight. The book unravels a lot, but at the same time even more secrets come to life. And at the ending of the first book, you just wished you had the next book right now, so you could dive into it right now. The intrigue with Ancients and the Great Tyrant is still high and you just want to know faster what is going to happen next.

Did I perk your interest? I hope I did, because this book is amazing with its own myths, history and a lot of adventures. In the beginning it might be hard to get the whole bear thing going into the mind, but the more you read the more interesting it becomes. I hope you’ll be adding this book to your reading list right now and getting your copy now! Enjoy it to its fullest

5.0 su 5 stelle An Epic Fantasy for Readers of Any Age 3 febbraio 2015
Di Susan Barton - Pubblicato su

Although Fantasy isn't usually my first genre choice in books, I decided to download a copy of Everflame for two reasons. The first being it was free, the second because it had garnered over 930 Amazon reviews, with a four star average. Considering the book was self-published I thought this was an admirable accomplishment. As a book marketer, I had to see just what Mr. Peters is doing right.

Everflame follows the lives of the inhabitants of Gray Mountain - inhabitants that happen to be bears. The Everflame is also a literal flame that burns eternally atop Gray Mountain as a symbol of enduring spirit. The bears have set up a kingdom-style system of existence and it seems to work very nicely - until two well-respected bears, Eveneye and Whiteclaw, come upon a human baby in the forest. Eveneye decides to keep him and raise him as his own. He and his wife, Goldenheart, name the baby Evercloud.

When Eveneye approaches King Irontooth for permission to keep Evercloud, the King is furious - in most bears' eyes, humans are evil and not to be trusted. Eveneye feels so strongly about keeping Evercloud, he rebels against King Irontooth in a brazen display of defiance. After a series of "challenges", Eveneye is able to dethrone the King and become King of Gray Mountain.

Subsequently we follow Evercloud as he grows into a noble, righteous man who valiantly accepts his quest to find the once banished Ancients, who are now necessary to rid the world of all its evil.

The secondary story of Edgar Shein is at first separate, but then it becomes clear what his role is in the bigger picture of Everflame - Edgar grows up to be the Messenger - the chosen one whom The Holy speaks to and gives commands to rid the world of evil.

Everflame is clearly a story of good vs. evil - a story that is as old as time itself. However, I found Dylan Peters' version to be imaginative and unique. Many of us can relate to a world that has been desecrated by modern man and we can understand how animals would be fearful of him. I also detected a degree of religious undertones in Everflame. This book certainly gives readers a lot to think about.

I would definitely recommend Everflame. I do not feel it is geared solely toward young readers. The characters and story will appeal to readers of any age. The ending is left open and readers will surely want to find out where these characters go next. Obviously I will be reading all the books in this series!
3.0 su 5 stelle Great world, mediocre plotting 27 marzo 2017
Di J. Seidman - Pubblicato su

This book started off great: a vividly realized fantasy world in which bears have their own civilization, which they keep (along with their ability to speak) hidden from humans. The protagonist is an abandoned human child who was adopted by the bears and raised as one of their own. Now he is drawn into a quest to try to help the four old gods reclaim the Earth from the tyrant that imprisoned them.

But as the story went on, I became less enamored. It's a story that depends heavily on deus ex machina to keep going. The story started to read like old-fashioned pulp fiction, with the characters just going improbably from episode to episode.

I don't regret the time I spent reading it, but I'm not moving on to the rest of the series.

Short Review (50 word or less)

I'll admit, I wasn't too fond of this book at the beginning, it started out slow, but then it picked up speed and I couldn't put it down! The characters are interesting, the plot strong, and it gets better, as the book goes on! If you enjoy a good mythological tale, this is worth reading!
