Julia grew up in the north of England in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Number four of six children—two brothers and three sisters, born within eight years of each other. Her musical parents immersed all the children in music and encouraged them to take an active part in its pursuit. All siblings played instruments and attended Catholic primary and secondary schools. Julia participated in acting, singing, instrument-playing, and gymnastics. Her mother was a French teacher and her father, a physics lecturer, so the family benefitted from long summer holidays spent camping in Europe, particularly France.

Gained Post Graduate Certificate in Education to teach French, English and Drama at secondary school. Later achieved diploma in Education of the Deaf and Level One and Two in British Sign Language.

After teaching French in Manchester, Julia lived in the US for two years working for a law firm and acting. On returning to the UK, she worked in a primary school in west London, first in mainstream, then in a unit for pupils with hearing impairment. She was employed as an advisory teacher for deaf children ages 0-19, supporting them and their famiies at home, school and college. Her time in London saw her continuing with acting and gaining an acting agent.

5.0 su 5 stelle A wonderful book! Although it covers very difficult subjects, it's a joy to read -- 12 marzo 2015

-- such a joy to read, that after reading a few other books that didn't satisfy, I went back and read it for a second time. I am just as moved this time, and although I rarely take the time to write reviews, I am compelled to add my praise to the other reviews here. A second read reconfirmed my love of Julia Johnston's writing, and while this book may be classified as young adult, I believe it's for everyone.

I care about these very believable characters, and share their happiness in the good times and their sorrow in the worst of times. The dialog and narration are wonderful, and it made me smile often (and even laugh out loud a few times) and brought tears to my eyes as well. I loved how Ms. Johnston wove in information about plants, art, and literature, as well as details about the region, which I've never visited.

As for the person who complained about "foul language" and "inappropriate humor" -- I really have no idea she's talking about! (And I despise reviews that give the main events away-- why is that necessary?! Fortunately, I didn't see it until after I had read this excellent book.) I don't know anyone that, faced with the difficult situations these characters endure, wouldn't say a few strong words in anguish or frustration. But there was certainly nothing vulgar (or anything that teenage kids don't hear every day in this modern world). And as for the humor, I thought the author got it just right.

I am looking forward to sharing this book with my teenage son (this summer, when he doesn't have homework!). He also loves to read and I have a very strong feeling he will absolutely love this book too.
5.0 su 5 stelle Poignant and Uplifting, tragic and witty. Is that possible? 3 marzo 2015

I am always interested in how different people view the same tricky situation , especially with regard to health and illness as I work in this sector. This book provides a teenage view of serious illness of a beloved little sister and all the angst and anger the situation generates in Ollie, Lily's brother. Ollie has the added disadvantage of being the middle child & so cannot escape the home and the trauma that comes with it as often as his older brothers. He's often left feeling ill informed and abandoned by his parents and bereft -his descriptions of these feelings are moving. The book is peppered with black humour and nerdy banter between Ollie and his best friend, Kamal which provides the reader with the same kind of relief that it provided Ollie.
This is a book for any age as all generations are represented in the story. Pass it round the family!

5.0 su 5 stelle What a beautiful, complete treasure of a book....... 28 agosto 2014

I picked this book not just because of the summary, but because of the beautiful art on the cover. I was immediately drawn into the gorgeously told story of Oliver and his dysfunctional family life, and days later, am still thinking about all the things I read. It's a beautiful, funny, poignant, and heartbreaking story that grabbed me and just didn't let go...I laughed, cried, empathized and grieved with Oliver and his family. I cannot recommend this book enough and I only wish I could do it over and experience it again for the first time.....
4.0 su 5 stelle Sweet and sad 28 febbraio 2015

This is a very sweet and sad story about a young boy and his love for his little sister who has fallen seriously ill with a brain disease. Oliver loves plants and flowers and their correct names and uses them to describe things throughout the book. He feels abandoned by his mom , whose energy and time are taken up by Lily, his little sister. The love that Olver and Lily share as siblings is so beautiful . Oliver's compassion for her and for the homeless man is so endearing . I really enjoyed this book and loved the writing style of the author. I have to admit that I pictured Oliver as Brick from the middle!
