In 1993, 24 children are abducted by aliens from hospitals across the UK. They are discovered later dispersed at random and in pairs, cured of cancer with their genomes modified to contain an extra ten chromosomes. The last two Max Lennox and Jonathan Price are found in a wood in Leicestershire and later the aliens return to leave a device of some kind buried in the ground. Who or what is behind these events and why have the children been altered? Julian Grey chairs a committee to investigate these bizarre events yet he is immediately aware of conspiracies, involving his estranged wife Sally Grey; his former friend and now rival, Louis DeMarr, and also James DeSilva, a leading virologist with apparent knowledge of the alien DNA and earlier attempts at contact. Furthermore the device is now missing, seemingly hidden away by the very authorities Julian is working for, its function and purpose unknown. The scientists are then confounded by the sudden collapse of the alien chromosomes. Has the experiment failed? Will it be tried again? As the children are released Julian discovers evidence revealing that alien DNA has contaminated Max s chromosome 22 and is hybridising human and alien genetic data. Who on the committee prepared the data and why is Max different from the other children? Julian adopts Max and brings him back to Oxford, where he grows up into a beguiling, beautiful youth, secretive and increasingly aware of his difference. As Max approaches adulthood, Julian is aware that his son remains at the heart of a dark insistent conspiracy and by 2006 Max is beginning to physically alter; changes noticed by his father, and his possessive best friend Jamie Relph; changes long predicted by James DeSilva, who knew what Max was for all along...

Vernon Hewitt was born in Leicestershire and was educated at Boswoth College, Desford, the University of East Anglia, and St Peter s College and Nuffield College, Oxford. He has travelled widely in the US, South Asia and Africa and has written extensively on India, Pakistan, the Kashmir dispute, British colonial reform and international development. He is a keen grower and breeder of roses and his interests range from astronomy to the occult. An Extraordinary Boy is his first novel.

Extraordinary book about an extraordinary boy. From the top cover to the back you will be fascinated. Wyndham, Heinlein, they definitely come to mind when you read the book. I let you discover why. I was particularly impressed by the reference to 'The Tempest'. It's quite amazing to realize that it is almost an interactive book; I let myself identify with one character. I plan to read 'An Extraordinary Boy' again, identifying to another. How vain of me to want to be Max! I hope Vernon Hewitt is working on part 2 of his story... And I hope he writes fast... I can't wait to read what happens next! I bought 2 more copies; they are gone, already circulating in my circle of friends.

Superb Storyline

Brilliant read. This book has a different, but very strong storyline. I have read many Sci-fi books and this one is among the best in recent years. The characters are really engaging and interesting. The friendship between Max and Jamie provides a great sub-plot. I would strongly recommend this book to any sci-fi fan.
