I'll be honest (as I always try to be) it was free and as I started buying ebooks, I didn't think it would be as good as the ones I bought (at the time everyone was talking about how self-published books were just not as good as traditionally pubbed ones).
Recently, I've been trying to read books from own bookshelves (electronic and otherwise), I have books that I bought back when I started blogging in 2012 and still haven't read. Then I had the idea of starting from my earliest purchased ebooks to the latest and Falling Star is what came up first.
Even though my perception of self-pubbed books - I intially thought this was self published but see now that it isn't - has changed dramatically over the years I was still suprised to find that this was good. So good in fact, that I read it in half a day.
The characters were charming and the plot was full of twists, most of which I never saw coming. I thoroughly enjoyed Falling Star by Diana Dempsey (although I will admit, she sometimes relied to heavily on stereotypes when describing characters and their actions) and will be looking into her other books.

The plot revolves round Natalie Daniels, an anchor woman on a Los Angeles TV news station. Natalie is separated from her husband and has a tenuous relationship with the stations director, who seems to be doing everything he can to under mine her position there. To add to her woes she is very attracted to her very handsome and kind agent Geoff, who is already in a relationship.
For me the story really took hold when Natalie's colleague Kelly Devlin antics really started to affect everyone, and it was at that point, that I found myself unable to put the book down. Kelly is the antithesis of Natalie and defines all that can go wrong. She is callous and unprofessional and fascinating because of it.
I particularly liked that this novel featured strong female characters such as Natalie's friend and colleague Ruthie, her lawyer Bertie, as well BD, (a rival from another LA station), as well as Natalie herself, and gave them depth and substance. I was expecting a romance with a few sub plots and peripheral character to flesh out the story, but this was not the case, I am pleased to say.
In actuality, the author could have left out the romance between Natalie and Geoff and still had a page turner on her hands, I would have read it just to find out what happened to each of the main protagonists, but I was really glad she didn't. The build up to the Natalie/Geoff relationship was realistically handled and not rushed, although there was the sense it was inevitable, I felt satisfied ultimately.
I recommend this book highly, and really enjoyed the details especially all the throwaway references regarding the day to day running of a news station. It made it feel very real.
I really enjoyed this. I literally watched the plot thicken as the author bit by bit entangled all the individual story lines, and let all hell breaks loose. My kind of story!

The book is based around TV news anchor Natalie, whose husband recently left her and who finds that her job may be possibly under threat from her new boss who wants someone younger replacing her. Added to that, her gorgeous agent is on the verge of proposing to someone else and Natalie has worked out that quite possibly, she may have feelings for him. With Natalie's life starting to unravel at the seams, she soon realises that she needs to take charge of her own life and adopts a `go get `em' attitude that might not quite work as well as she hopes...
Despite some predictability, this book has believable, flawed characters and some great little twists and humor. Natalie as a heroine was great, and I also enjoyed reading about her rival Kelly who was determined that she'd get what she wanted, no matter who she had to step on to get there- very true to life. You really do find yourself rooting for the characters and wanting them to get their comeuppance overall, as well as wincing when Natalie's life doesn't go quite to plan.
I would have quite happily paid for this novel- it was a really fun, fast read with a snazzy Hollywood setting that rather put me in mind of a Jackie Collins blockbuster. I think this would make a great holiday read to curl up with by the pool and really get lost in and I will definitely be checking out other books by this author in future. Recommended!

This is a really good look behind the scenes of the US TV news reporting, where it's all about appearance and little about the substance. They coined the phrase "if it bleeds, it leads" and the obsession with tragedy, scandal and celebrity, results in news broadcasts that are shallow, predictable and have more in common with soap operas than with news reporting.
I felt that all of the characters were really well developed and it was easy to understand their motivations. The story moves at an excellent pace and could eaily be read right through in a single session as it is so engaging. I must admit to a lot of sympathy for the character of Natalie, as I've also had to deal with a level of ageism in my work, and it is frustrating to know that skill is valued as less important than a number.
The end of the story also carries a morality tale, that you can overcome adversity. Sadly, bad things do happen to good people, but sometimes that can be the impetus required to make you look at things you might otherwise never consider. In all, I really enjoyed this story and would highly recommend it. Be aware that there is some adult content though.
