Ken Wash lives in St. Louis, Mo. He is an Army Reserve Soldier who has served an 35 years in Active Army and Army Reserves, enjoying a career in the Ordnance branch as a 915E Senior Automotive Technician. Mr. Wash is currently serving on Reserve (TPU) status as the Engineer Equipment Technician for the 416th Theater Engineer Command (TEC) in Darien, Il. Mr. Wash's civilian employment is as a Heavy Equipment Inspector Technician at the Area Support Maintenance Facility (AMSA) in St. Charles, Mo. on the 88th Reserve Support Command's Weldon Spring training site. Mr. Wash has been writing as a hobby on and off for about fifteen years. He has written several short stories, edited and produced documents for military publications and directed, produced and edited military videos and keynote presentations for high visibility military staff functions. Another so-called "action thriller" that really overdoes the action part and the enormous amount of acronyms and military jargon. I was expecting Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis to pop up on almost every page. Could have been a good story if the author had used a bit more finesse in his plot and storyline. I suggest he should study the works of Frederick Forsyth.

I am a fan of modern terrorist novels and Tom Clancy my favorite author, but this book kept me on the edge of my seat and I didn't want it to end, what more can I say!

This book started out with a fast-moving plot and interesting characters. But once the scene changed to the US, the story dragged and it became overly detailed and tedious. Far too many characters were introduced, making the book confusing. So many unbelievable bits thrown in, such as the terrorist Leaja being intimately familiar with things he could not have known on his first trip to the US and Ramsay and others figuring out in moments things that would normally take a lot of investigation (the bomb scene at the zoo, for instance). Also, the use of "Allah Akubar" and Alluha Akbar" was annoying. I did make it to the end of The Final Defense after being tempted repeatedly to put it down, but I was skimming much of the book in the second half. The 3-months later ending had an interesting twist and I did like that the author tried to get into the head of terrorists to explain their side of things, but these weren't enough to save this book.

First the bad - it's the typical us versus the terrorist novel, this time involving a nuclear weapon smuggled int0 the country. The story line has now been done dozens of times and the final outcome is pretty much predetermined. Thirty years ago every spy/action thriller dealt with Russia as the boogeyman, not it's middle eastern terrorist. However, even though it's formula writing, this one is still pretty good.

The book moves at a decent pace, could probably have been shortened up a bit in some areas but overall it gets the job done. A good bit of the book is character development for future novels which is fine if a bit tedious. However, the characters mesh well together and play off one another easily. The epilogue to the book is really just setting the table for the next installment.

It's no Clancy in his heyday (although far better than the current Clancy) but well worth reading for fans of this genre.
