On April 4th, 2014, 6 billion and 783 million people died in the blinding white fireballs of the Pan-Global Nuclear Holocaust. Sophie Saint-Germain, wife and scientist and mother of one, was not among them.
She lived for a time, and so her words endure.
The reclamation of her terrifying story is a miracle in itself. Uncovered during the Shoshone Geyser Basin archaeological excavations of 2316, Sophie’s unearthed diary reveals the most secret confessions of the only known female survivor of the Holocaust in central Colorado.

The story itself is short (although there are two further volumes after this) but even being a novella does not detract from the speed and tension of the plot which is very chilling.
I am looking forward to reading parts II & III in the very near future as this is very reminiscent of the cold war propaganda I remember during the 1980's.
If you like apocalyptic stories then spend a very wise 77p and pick up this little gem (at time of writing volume II is free on Amazon).

25 minutes later Russian bombs are falling out of the sky and the nuclear holocaust begins. And Sophie survives...
FROM THE FIRE is the first part of a holocaust post war story by Kent David Kelly, based on the diary by Sophie Saint-Germain, found in a far future from now.
Good idea, nice story, sometimes a little strange.

This novella caught my attention with the author's well-written account. Using a future professor of history to narrate the "diary" of Sophie's journey (our present time), he held my attention with his main character's reactions & thoughts as she struggles with the horrific details of her new world. It is an unexpected combination of suspense, horror, emotion & determination, with gruesome details neither glossed over, nor highlighted. The story could stand alone, simply leaving the future to the reader's imagination. However, I gladly purchased the other books, believing the story to be both believable & well done. I was not disappointed.
Note: with the harrowing details, this novella, like the remainder of the series, is not for weaker hearts or stomachs.
In regards to the series: The development of the primary character & the growing understanding of the narrator's personal journey are both enthralling. As with the first, there are no improbable events, reactions or details. Much like a bystander at a wreck, I found myself unable to turn away. However, the series is much more than just descriptive gore, it is a journey with a determined mother to find her child.

This novelette is full of action and suspense.
The pace of the story starts off solid and increases into a nail biting, edge of your seat thrill.
It was easy to relate to the protagonist in the book, and understand her doubts, fears, hopes, and motivations.
The author did a good job in creating believable settings.
I found the brief reference to watching survivalist shows on television (as a way to prepare) amusing.
I found a few faults within this novelette, all of which were in the narrators introduction or with the authors writing style. the first is that it is way too short (26 pages roughly 14,960 words).
The next was that the notes from the interpreter makes it sound like this book was reconstructed off a diary, but there is no actual diary entries. The book is written in limited third person point of view, which conflicts with the concept of this being a survivors recounting of the events.
I did not understand why in the intro of the book the author said that there were times the main character was 'unlikable'? Where did that happen? Must be something in future segments?
Overall this was a good read. I recommend it to apocalyptic genre readers.

Now for the negative. I agree with others that have voiced issues with paying for a book in parts. The total cost does seem a bit high, but I pay more for a cup of coffee at my corner coffee shop than each installment is offered at, so it really isn't that bad in my opinion. Plus, each installment is available to borrow for free if you are an Amazon Prime member.
