Descrizione prodotto

Forged in flame, wrought in blood, bone and steel, from the bowels of the earth and the inner most chambers of the heart, dragons arise. Fired by their passion, inspired by legend, six talented storytellers delve into realms of myth and fantasy as they explore what it means to be human.

First Flight: Vanderson Egilhard yearns to fly, but when he discovers his father’s secret, the fate of his family and perhaps the world falls into his young hands.

A Dragon’s Honor: When ancient alliances fail and friends stand alone to face certain doom, one dark secret and Calrym’s courage spell the utter destruction or dawning new age of two failing nations.

Birth Pains: Bellalinde made a terrible sacrifice for love. Years later, her choice sends her and her granddaughter on a journey from which only one can return.

Golden Legacy: Hated, hunted, marked for extermination, when a young assassin hunts down Zachariah, he must decide which of them truly deserves to live.

Heart of Steel: When murder steals his wife from Gideon Hendry, lust for revenge fires his passions. Only his fantastic creations know if he can escape his obsession before it seals his fate.

A Chink In The Armor: Blessed by the gods, Job has never lost a battle. He has triumphed over every challenge from man and nature. Arrogant? Yes, but he's invincible. Or is he?

I have only read the first story in this book but enjoyed it. A bit juvenile but not bad. The descriptions had my imagination going of what the different characters were and looked like.

5.0 su 5 stelle Dragon lovers flock to this one! 1 novembre 2012
Di Alishia Duling - Pubblicato su

Even though I am not an avid reader of Anthologies, I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. I love dragons and stories filled with them. The wonderful art that comes with a book of Anthologies, is even though the stories share a common subject, they vary quite vastly. Dragons, of course you can tell, were the theme with this one. How each author told their tale focusing around the dragon theme, for each, was very well written and very imaginative!

First Flight- Author Sam Mayo
My perception of this tale was focused in either a futuristic or post- apocalyptic environment. I love the two characters, sister and brother, Esme and Van. Van is a spunky little guy and Esme the clever gal. Flight, the skies and mechanics encompass this story and a draw in guaranteed! I very much enjoyed this tale and the creative way the author storied his dragon.

A Dragon's Honor- Author Brian Collier
This dragon tale goes back to the Arthurian time, at least to my perspective, with valiant knights and kings and queens. In this tale, the princess, Muriel, is now in charge of her kingdom's army and the fate of it as well. The noble knight Sir Devon, her childhood friend, still stands for his king and princess. In a battle against the enemy, they are slowly losing the war. As a last resort, Princess Muriel escorted by her Sir Devon goes on a quest to acquire allies. With the focus on dragons, I must leave it at this, not wanting to ruin the story. Another well told tale with a bit of romance on the side.

Birth Pains- Author Eric White
I will jump straight off and say this one was my ultimate favorite in the brilliant packaged deal. The way author Eric White unfolded his tale and the description in which he told it, captivated me from first word until the last. I tore through this story. With the title Birth Pains, you can assume there is a baby delivery in this tale, but with a twist. I enjoyed the grandmother and Mrylinde and the creative tale encompassed around them. Dragons are of course included, but you will simply have to read to find out the cleverness in how it was incorporated in this one.

Golden Legacy- Author Jana Bosky
A modern theme with of course dragon incorporated in it as well (it is the theme right?) A story centered around two players, Zachariah and Athena. One to assassinate the other, a conversation, a spark, a fight...oh my! That is all I'll say...have to read. I liked the spark between these two, characters to definitely connect with.

Heart of Steel- Author Caitlin McColl
This was my second favorite. A connection twisted inside metal, gears and revenge. I enjoyed the way author Caitlin McColl unraveled her tale focused around the dragon theme and really liked the characters within it. This is another review that must be kept short, as not to spoil anything for the next reader in which this is a must read, so now have to read it. Trust me, you'll like this one also.

A Chink in the Armor- Author D. Robert Pease
Last, but definitely not the least, Job is the main character in this tale. Battle is his plight; strength, leadership, and faith are his allies...among other fellow courageous comrades. He stands firm, confident and almost indestructible. Humbling is this story and intriguing as well...remember, no spoilers...

All in all, I rate this book in whole five worthy stars, if not a sixth. You will definitely be drawn into each story. This is a book, I highly recommend for your next reading pleasure. I was given an ARC book in return for my honest review. This is my whole hearted honest review.

5.0 su 5 stelle Here There Be Dragons 1 febbraio 2013
Di Ronald Fischman - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
They inspire our creations, the creations of madmen. They fire the embers of our weak imaginations and make us soar over the nullities of our lives to speak with gods. Leonardo da Vinci, "the Conqueror," longed to copy them. Thousands of our best young artists and designers struggle to illustrate them. And in Forged in Flame, five authors tell their stories: here there be Dragons.

This slim anthology of five novellas explores dragons as they might have appeared in mythology, how they might have interacted, even mated, with humanity, and how the innate madness of these creations might fire the madness of inventors. Thirty-one year old Samuel Mayo is first, with a short appropriately titled "First Flight." This novella might be targeted at the middle grade reader, with young teen-aged protagonists and a villain who must steal an unnatural power source. The "flight" refers to the boy's invention and the demon dragon that must steal the power-generator to wreak havoc on a post-apocalyptic Earth. We leap back to the wonders of a medieval landscape, with a peaceable kingdom besieged on all sides - except from the North, the land of the mystical creatures who would leave the kingdom to its fate. But then the Dragon Kingdom learns that it has scales in the game. The massive, peaceful giants weigh in on the side of harmony. This novella is written by a fantasy writer, Brian Collier, who has always made writing his profession.

Eric White, another writer who struggles to create his fantasy world out of a schedule committed to earning a living another way, brings us a medieval aquascape, rather than a landscape. In "Birth Pains," a girl reprises Mary by bearing without the benefit of a man, but she carries triplets - triplet dragons, that is. Even when she seems like a girl in trouble, used by a boy whose reputation she has sworn to protect, two heroes arise to bring her to the place where she can make this miraculous birth. One is her devoted grandmother, and another is a sea warrior who makes Admiral Peary go weak at the knees. In "Golden Legacy" by 22-year-old author Jana Boskey, a man of decidedly paranormal blood - half dragon, half "Faerie" - is hunted by an Assassin, a teenaged girl who knows nothing but pursuit of people with paranormal abilities. There is an ongoing struggle of life and death here; Boskey's genius is to make the supremely powerful dragon legend hover between life and death at the point of a dagger wielded by a teen-aged girl.

In "Heart of Steel," Caitlyn McColl brings us the mind of the insatiable inventor, whose quest for truth transforms into a lust for revenge when he finds his beloved apparently murdered. The remarkable genius who brings forth cyborg creatures of every description brings a great dragon automaton to life to seek revenge. The identity of the killer, and the nature of the crime, twist the plot into a psychological pretzel. The final story, from D. Robert Pease, author of the two Noah Zarc novels, brings us full-circle in the lore of dragons. In "A Chink in the Armor," the dragon seeks the greatest warrior on Earth to confront and to test the mettle of in battle. Humanity has found that it has come upon an enemy that it cannot overcome. In the words of Blue Oyster Cult, "History shows again and again how Nature points out the folly of men!"

Forged in Flame is my first exposure to dragons since the Lord of the Rings and Wagner's Ring Cycle operas. I was mightily impressed by the scope of the works contained herein, from the geeklike to the epic. The writers and editors who compiled this volume have done a marvelous job! There is one flaw, that borders on the serious: it is not OK to miss homophones in the editing process. A writer can be excused (barely) for using "vile" when he means "vial," but a publisher had better keep such mistakes out of their product if it is to make a name for itself as a quality publisher. This fault is severe enough to lose half a mark in my book. If I could break a star, this would reduce my rating from 5 to 4.5 stars, but in a whole-star system, I give this collection five stars and a resume for a copy editor.

5.0 su 5 stelle A great anthology 31 ottobre 2012
Di M. B. Mulhall - Pubblicato su
Formato: Formato Kindle
A great collection of dragon related stories. I love the steampunk aspect many of them had as well. I'm not always a huge fan of shorts because I love when a good story continues. Several of these tales caught my interest and I'd love to know what happens next! Or before!

It's a good mix of fantasy, paranormal and steampunk aspects. Quick enjoyable reads that come in an absolutely stunning cover.

I highly recommend this anthology!
