5.0 su 5 stelle ... her that I had read the classics in the fantastic genre and was just waiting for something new 10 novembre 2015

I have read this book at the recommendation of a friend when I told her that I had read the classics in the fantastic genre and was just waiting for something new. I really did not know what to expect with this book, and this author, and I am giving it a five star because I kept being more and more drawn in the story as I was reading it. It really fulfilled my need for a good book.
The story is energetic and full of fighting and adventures. Luckily I was not put off by the fighting and violence, as that is something to expect when our four adventurers keep meeting monsters and fantastic creatures of all kind, from goblins, to orcs, dwarves, elves, and magicians of course. As our adventurers progress in their quest I felt drawn to each of them. None are perfect, they each have some strength but also fears and it is their courage and comradery that help them overcome the obstacles.
However what I really loved was the plot as we start to know our heroes better and find them in mysterious, unknown worlds. I would say that the meeting with each monster brings a new story and new depth that brings the story to greater and greater depth (literally), and comes a point where it's no longer possible to put the book down. I was able to spread the reading over a couple of weeks (only allowing myself a set amount of time every other night), but I am afraid to confess that about two third of the way I could not resist and finished the book in just one last night of (very pleasant) reading.
I am now eagerly waiting for the next book in this series because the characters are now well developed, and they have discovered an amazing world that only seem like the beginning of a long and suspenseful journey.

Recommended by a friend, I was drawn into the interesting and likeable characters, detailed scene building, and action. This is my first foray into this genre - will definitely pick up the next in this series when it becomes available!

5.0 su 5 stelle An interesting world is created with the standard fantasy creatures ... 31 luglio 2015

An interesting world is created with the standard fantasy creatures dwarfs, orcs, etc. This is more in the adventure genre of J. R. R. Tolkien than in the ethical genre of L. E. Modesitt Jr. The characters are well developed, and although the narrative follows the adventures of the "four companions", the world-view of those they encounter is also explored. This story seems to have no moral. The humans are just as good/evil as the less than humans. But maybe that's the moral. The interaction and cooperation between the different races is what makes this special. It's an interesting read and I look forward to the next installment.

I gave this book a 5 star rating because, as I was reading a new and unknown author, I really didn't know what to expect and was thrilled to find that I was completely drawn in. I read through it very quickly and even found myself doing what I always do with good books like this: seek to sneak in a minute here and there because I just can't wait to find out what happens next. The book is action-packed and has enough bloody battles for any fan of fantasy who has a bit of a Dungeons and Dragons appreciation.

I really wonder where the story's going to go in the up-coming books and can't wait to read them. The characters developed well in this book and I believe I see the beginnings of a general theme coming into view: namely, that (without giving too much away) the various creature groups in this fantasy world, though at odds with each other, can (and have in the past?) come together to great benefit for all if they would break down their divisions, celebrate their diverse skills and virtues leaving behind what is truly evil.

This doesn't happen among the creature groups overall in The Forging, but within our adventurous foursome, a true breaking down of prejudice occurs and a microcosm of true brotherhood takes hold. This isn't to say that the members of our foursome are good by the absolute standard but their eyes are opening and the exciting journey will continue. I can't wait to read more!
4.0 su 5 stelle A good entry to the Fantasy genre 4 gennaio 2014

I won this book in an exchange for an honest review.

The Forging is Tim Rose's debut novel into the fantasy genre. This novel contains the usual elements of dwarves, orcs, orgres, elves, get the idea. The writing could be a bit more polished and I did find several type-o's.

Overall the story is quite simple; 4 friends on a quest. There's plenty of adventure and fighting with our protagonist getting their share of bumps and bruises.

I think what sets this story apart from typical fantasy novels is the fact that there are 4 of them working together. No one is stronger or smarter. Each brings his and her own strengths to the group. For a new writer in the field, Mr. Rose did an admirable job of meshing these 4 characters to make a cohesive and daunting adversary. On the flip side I would have liked to see more depth given to the characters, especially Breanna; perhaps have entire chapters devoted to just one character at a time. Mr. Rose does incorporate this concept but very fleetingly when he gives each character their moment of retrospection after a battle.

No Lord of the Rings or Hobbit, but a decent adventure story from someone who is trying his hand in a very hot genre right now.
