On the Shores of Mother Lake: A journey to the Tibetan border to meet the Moso people (English Edition)

For thousands of years the Moso have lived in the foothills of the Himalayas, in Yunnan province, south-west China. Theirs is an egalitarian society where the roles of women and men are given equal value. No single activity is thought to be superior or inferior on the basis of gender and there is no discrimination between the sexes in their upbringing and education. The society is a model of harmony and peace: women steer it and men accept this, without feeling that their virility is threatened. Universal concepts such as the family, marriage, motherhood, and fatherhood take on different meanings amongst the Moso, calling into question our value system and showing us another model for society. The absence of marriage and the fact that women have personal control over their bodies and their sexuality are not seen as threats to morality, or incitement to social disorder, but as the most natural way for them to lead their lives, with harmony between the sexes. Sadly, the existence of this community is under threat from the pervasive influx of tourism, transforming the collective economy of the Moso into a market economy. Technological progress is achieved at the cost of traditional values.
On the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, the Moso were recognised as an exemplary society that could inspire communities around the world.
