We've been cooking several meals a week using a meal kit delivery company and as delicious and varied as these meals are, they almost all require cooking in a skillet/fry pan (my pan of choice is the 12" Calphalon Signature non stick skillet).
After finally getting tired of cleaning my range after every meal, I decided to try this. For my 12" Calphalon skillet, I ordered the Frywall 12 and it fits perfectly.
I don't typically read instructions, and because of this, I used this inside-out the first several times. The instructions say to flip it inside out so the ridge that runs along the bottom edge is in the inside and not touching against the pan itself - - in other words, you should be able to see the ridge when looking down into the pan. I don't see this making a huge difference, but it seems to keep its' shape better which makes it a little easier to situate in pan. Once it's in, it also seems to seat a little firmer in the pan without moving around.
Another small tip I learned from reading the instructions, is you can use the plastic sleeve it comes in to slip it back into for storage.
As far as how it works:
- no difference in technique when sauteing. Additional bonus because no worries about splashing or sauces bubbling.
- flipping delicate fish fillets is a little more difficult however, because you need to reach down and into the pan rather that approach the filet directly from the side. It works, but you just need to be a little more careful - - - very much worth the extra effort compared to having to clean the range though.
- love how this cone extends the height of the sides of the pan when cooking up a large quantity of greens. I was able to throw in a whole clamshell container of spinach and use tongs to toss as it cooked down.
Washing it is a snap too. I wash it last, so I can just hang it over my faucet head to dry (I have a high arch faucet and a deep sink).
Bottom line, is that since using this, I have yet to need to wipe and clean my range after using my skillet. It may look goofy, but this dog cone really works!
So I'm in love with this product. It does what it says and keeps your stove clean. The added plus is that you can be sloppy with your stirring and flipping because it keeps everything in the pan.
I just ordered the 10". Thank you for creating this wonderful kitchen tool.
BUT, after seeing the product, I can't believe it was almost $30! Seriously? I'm hoping it's just because it's a new product and the initial development cost are high. I think that the price of this should be less than $20. If I could have a wish list, it would be that there was an adjustable frywall. I have an adjustable silicon pie shield that the frywall could take some pointers from. Will not buy the smaller size because of the price, but will buy if the price comes down.
